| First Test Bulawayo 07 - 08 August 2005 Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bowl first. The decision paid early dividends after Mahwire dismissed openers Vincent (13) and James Marshall (5) in the space of three balls to have New Zealand 2 for 24. New Zealand then consolidated, but lost Hamish Marshall (20) in the hour before lunch at 3 for 63. New Zealand then batted through to be 3 for 100 at lunch, with Zimbabwe holding a slight edge. Zimbabwe started the afternoon session in similar style to the morning session, catching Astle (23) and then running out Styris (7) to see New Zealand in increasing difficulty at 5 for 113. New Zealand again consolidated and batted through the remainder of the session until Fleming (73) was caught on the stroke of tea, with the score 6 for 233 and the match more evenly poised. During the evening session, McCullum (111) posted his second Test century before being caught at 7 for 309. Later, Zimbabwe bowled Franklin (13) before Vettori (127) posted his second Test century and New Zealand ended the day in a very comfortable position at 9 for 452, having added 219 runs in the evening session. New Zealand declared their innings closed overnight. Mahwire was the best of the bowlers with 3 for 115 off 26 overs. Zimbabwe began their reply very badly, losing Ferreira (5), Ebrahim (0), Masakadaza (0) and Wishart (0) to be 4 for 11 in the fifth over and Zimbabwe's hopes of avoiding the follow on had been dashed. Six overs later, Taylor (10) was run out at 5 for 28. After taking the total to 46, the dismissal of Taibu (5) triggered a further collapse, with Streak (0), and Mahwire (4) also out in the space of five runs. At lunch, Zimbabwe had thrown away the match in a single session with the score 8 for 82. New Zealand took 22 balls after lunch to dismiss Cremer (1) and Mpofu (0) to have Zimbabwe all out for 59, leaving Carlisle not out on 20. Franklin (3 for 11 off 5 overs) and Martin (3 for 21 off 10 overs) shared the bowling honours. With a 393 run first innings lead, New Zealand immediately enforced the follow on an caught Taylor (5) and bowled Ebrahim (8) to have Zimbabwe 2 for 14. By Tea, Zimbabwe had taken the score to 2 for 37, showing greater resistance second time around. Zimbabwe took the total to 76 before a terminal disaster struck. Wishart (5) was caught and his dismissal saw Carlisle (0), Masakadaza (42), Streak (3), Taibu (4), Cremer (3) and Mpofu (0) follow in the space of 23 runs to see Zimbabwe all out for 99 runs. Vettori, whose dismissal of Streak signalled his 200th Test wicket, was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 28 off 13.5 overs. Zimbabwe's dismissal twice on the same day was the first time since India was similarly humbled at Old Trafford in 1952. New Zealand's winning margin was an innings and 294 runs. Second Test Bulawayo 15 - 17 August 2005 Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision proved costly after Ebrahim (0) and Carlisle (1) were both trapped in front and then Masakadza (0) was caught hooking for Zimbabwe to be 3 for 7 in the fifth over. Zimbabwe then began to fight back and batted through to the drinks break without further loss. However, shortly before lunch, the dismissal of Wishart (30) triggered another mini collapse with Taylor (37) and Steak (0) falling in consecutive balls to see Zimbabwe in real trouble at 6 for 75 at the break. The afternoon session saw a complete reversal of fortune as Zimbabwe batted through the entire session, adding 113 runs in the session for only the loss of Dabangwa (17), to go to tea at 7 for 188 but with still a lot of rebuilding required. However, shortly after tea, Taibu (76) was caught with Mahwire (42) soon following. When Mpofu (7) was caught, Zimbabwe was all out for 231 runs while Bond claimed career best figures of 6 for 51 off 17 overs, his third five-wicket haul in Tests. New Zealand began their reply and faced nine overs before stumps, but James Marshall (10) was caught and then Hamish Marshall (13) was run out off the last ball of the day with the score was 2 for 24. On the second morning, Fleming posted his 6000th run in Tests as New Zealand batted comfortably through the session without loss to be 2 for 180 at lunch. Zimbabwe needed to quickly take many wickets in order to stay in the contest during the afternoon session. They started well, catching Fleming (65) and bowling Vincent (92) early in the session before soon afterwards catching Styris off a no ball. From that point, New Zealand reasserted control and went on to take the lead before going to tea at 4 for 287. Zimbabwe again struck twice after the break, with Styris (45) and McCullum (24) being caught for New Zealand to be 6 for 346. After Astle posted his eleventh Test century, Zimbabwe caught Vettori (48) and New Zealand ended the day in complete control of the match at 7 for 454. New Zealand added a further 30 runs on the third morning before Astle (128), Franklin (19) and Bond (8) were dismissed to see the Kiwis all out for 484 runs and a first innings lead of 253 runs. Streak was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 73 off 22 overs. Zimbabwe began their reply knowing there was little chance of staving off defeat. Zimbabwe faced 13 overs before lunch, during which time they lost Ebrahim (2) and then Carlisle (10) ran himself out. At lunch, Zimbabwe was 2 for 21. During the afternoon session, New Zealand dismissed Masakadaza (28), Wishart (0) while Zimbabwe added a further 113 runs to be 4 for 134 at tea. New Zealand then wrapped up the match on the third afternoon by dismissing Taylor (77) and Taibu (25) with the total on 146 runs, followed by Streak (2), Dabengwa (4) and Cremer (1). Then upon Mahwire posting 50, Mpofu (3) ran up the pitch to congratulate him before the ball was called dead and was run out. Zimbabwe was all out for 207 runs, handing New Zealand victory by an innings and 46 runs while Bond was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 48 off 14 overs. |
