| First Test Colombo 12 - 14 September 2005 Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field first.� Sri Lanka made an early breakthrough with Shahriar Nafees (3) bowled in the fourth over with the score 1 for 4.� However, Bangladesh then stabilised and took the total to 63 runs before Javed Omar (30) was caught just after the drinks break.� By lunch, Bangladesh had the stronger position with the score 2 for 112.� Sri Lanka regrouped over the lunch break and wrought destruction with the ball in the 17 overs after tea that saw them dismiss Bangladesh.� Sri Lanka dismissed Mohammad Ashraful (17), Tushar Imran (0), Habibul Bashar (84), Khaled Mashud (2), Aftab Ahmed (0), Mohammad Rafique (9), Shahadat Hossain (2) and Syed Rasel (19) in the space of only 33 runs to see Bangladesh all out for a miserable 188 runs.� Herath was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 38 off 12 overs.� Sri Lanka began their reply and was no wicket for 30 at tea.� Sri Lanka lost Jayasuriya (46) on the ball after the drinks break at 2 for 97 and then Sangakkara (30) was later caught before Sri Lanka ended the day comfortably placed at 3 for 160, only 28 runs in arrears. Sri Lanka made a strong start to the second morning, batting for just over an hour before Jayawardene (63) was caught behind at 4 for 231.� By lunch, Sri Lanka looked to be in complete control of the match with the score 4 for 254 and a lead of 66 runs.� Bangladesh dismissed Samaraweera (78) and Vass (5) in the first hour of the afternoon session, but could not make further inroads until Herath (13) was out on the stroke of tea with the score 7 for 337 and a lead of 149 runs.� Bangladesh dismissed Muralitharan (3) and Dilshan (86) before Sri Lanka declared at 9 for 370 to have a first innings lead of 182 runs.� Mohammad Rafique was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 114 off 37 overs, his sixth five-wicket haul in Tests.� Bangladesh began the task of erasing the deficit badly, losing Javed Omar (9), Shahriar Nafees (13) and Mohammad Ashraful (0) in the space of 26 runs to be 3 for 36 at stumps. Sri Lanka continued their inevitable path to victory on the third morning, dismissing Habibul Bashar (15), Tushar Imran (3), Aftab Ahmed (8), Mohammad Rafique (4), Syed Rasel (1), Khaled Mashud (15) and Enamul Haque (2) to have Bangladesh all out for a pathetic 86 runs in a total of only 27.4 overs.� Muralitharan was the best of the bowlers with 6 for 18 off 10.4 overs, his 47th five-wicket haul in Tests as Sri Lanka claimed victory by an innings and 96 runs. Second Test Colombo 20 - 22 September 2005 Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first.� Bangladesh took the early advantage by dismissing Attapatu (11), Jayasuriya (13) Jayawardene (2) and Sangakkara (5) in the first hour to have Sri Lanka in some trouble at 4 for 48.� However, Sri Lanka then steadied the innings and batted through to lunch without further loss to be 4 for 107.� Any advantage Bangladesh may have had disappeared during the afternoon as they went wicketless during the session, while Sri Lanka added another 161 runs to be 4 fore 268 at tea with Dilshan having posted his fourth Test century.� Samaraweera posted his fifth Test century after tea before Dilshan (168) was caught at 5 for 328.� Late in the session, Bangaldesh caught Samaraweera (138) and trapped Herath (1) in front before Sri Lanka ended the day completely in control at 7 for 449. Rain delayed play on the second morning.� When play began, Bangladesh dismissed Muralitharan (24) and Vaas (65) before Sri Lanka declared at 9 for 457.� Syed Rasel (4 for 129 off 21.3 overs) and Shahadat Hossain (4 for 108 off 20 overs) shared the bowling honours.� Bangladesh sufferrd an early loss of Shahriar Nafees (5) at 1 for 16.� However, Bangladesh then consolidated until, with 46 runs on the board, Sri Lanka dismissed Habibul Bashar (18) and Javed Omar (18) in the space of six runs to be 3 for 52.� Sri Lanka later dismissed Nafees Iqbal (5) shortly before Bangladesh went to lunch in trouble at 4 for 80. Sri Lanka relentlessly wore down the tourists after lunch, dismissing Mohammad Ashraful (42), Aftab Ahmed (23), Mohammad Rafique (6), Syed Rasel (5) and Shahadat Hossain (7) as Bangladesh crashed to 9 for 186 at tea.� Sri Lanka dismissed Khaled Mashud (26) soon after tea to have Bangladesh all out for 191 runs.� Fernando was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 60 off 11 overs, his third five-wicket haul in Tests.� Sri Lanka had no hesitation in enforcing the follow on with a first innings lead of 266 runs.� Bangladesh lost Javed Omar (9) at 1 for 22 and then Habibul Bashar (10) at 2 for 44 followed by Nafgees Iqbal (30) soon afterwards at 3 for 56.� However, Bangladesh then consolidated and took the total to 131 runs before Shahriar Nafees (51) was caught just before the umpires offered bad light.� At stumps, Bangladesh was 4 for 131, still 135 runs in arrears. Sri Lanka took most of the third morning session to dismiss Mohammad Ashraful (26), Shahadat Hossain (1, Aftab Ahmed (25), Khaled Mashud (18), mohammad Rafique (9) and syed Rasel (1) to have Bangladesh all out for 197 runs.� Vaas (3 for 36 off 13 overs) and Herath (3 for 52 off 15.4 overs) shared the bowling honours while Sri Lanka claimed victory by an innings and 69 runs. |
