| First Test Johannesburg 08 - 10 November 2002 Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first.� South Africa struck in the second over and dismissed Arnold (0) before the tourists stabilised and took the total to 46 before Sangakkara (26) was caught.� At Lunch, South Africa held the advantage with the score 2 for 68.� South Africa dismissed Atapattu (34) at 3 for 86 before another period of consolidation took Sri Lanka to 3 for 137.� The tourists then disintegrated, losing Jayawardene (39), Jayasuriya (32), Hasantha Fernando (0) and Vass (1) in the space of four runs to be 7 for 141 when tea was taken.� After tea, the tailenders added another 51 runs for the last three wickets and Sri Lanka was all out for 192 runs after Dilhara Fernando (7), Muralitharan (10) and Tillakaratne (24) were dismissed.� Kallis was the best of the bolwers with 3 for 35 off 17 overs.� South Africa cemented their ascendancy by batting through to stumps to be 0 for 51. South Africa punished the Sri Lankan bowling on the second morning before the two wickets of Smith (73) and van Jaarsveld (3) late in the session saw the home side go to lunch at 2 for 169.� South Africa suffered their own middle order collapse after lunch when Kirsten (55), Prince (3) and McKenzie (0) were out in the space of five runs and the home side slumped to 5 for 180.� Later, on the ball before tea was taken, Sri Lanka dismissed Boucher (38) when the score was 6 for 248.� Sri Lanka was unable run through the remaining batsmen during the evening session.� They managed to dismiss Pollock (38), but by stumps, South Africa was 7 for 378 with a valuable lead of 186 runs. Sri Lanka made an explosive start to the third morning by dismissing Hall (31), Kallis (75) and Elworthy (6) in the first 16 balls for the addition of only eight runs.� South Africa was all out for 386 with Vass, Muralitharan and Hasantha Fernando each taking three wickets in the innings.� Sri Lanka began their task of erasing the 194 run deficit by losing Arnold (0) in the second over at 1 for 2.� The task become improbable when Sangakkara (7) fell at 2 for 16 followed by Jayawardene (1) and Jayasuriya (0) by the time they reached 25 runs.� At lunch, South Africa were completely on top with the score 4 for 54.� Sri Lanka took the total to 77 before losing the wickets of Atapattu (43) and Hasantha Fernando (0).� Following another period of consolidation, Vass (32) fell at 7 for 122 then Tillakaratne (0) and Muralitharan (0) fell without another run added.� Finally Perera (4) was bowled and Sri Lanka was all out for 130, thus handing victory to South Africa by an innings and 64 runs.� Ntini (3 for 22 off 10 overs) and Hall (3 for 1 off 2 overs) were the most successful bowlers. Sri Lanka made a steady start before losing Atapattu (17) at 1 for 34 after the first hour.� Sri Lanka then accelerated and took the total to 90 when Sangakkara (35) was dismissed at lunch.� South Africa struck again soon after lunch and caught Mubarak (48) at 3 for 108.� Sri Lanka then gained the initiative and batted through to tea when the score was 3 for 173.� South Africa again struck early in the session and dismissed Jayawardene (44) and Arnold (2).� With the score 5 for 207, Sri Lanka again took the initiative and while losing Hasantha Fernando (24) in the third last over, at stumps, Sri Lanka was well placed at 6 for 263. South Africa wound up the tail on the second morning and, after dismissing Vass (7), Lakshitha (2), Fernando (0) and Muralitharan (27), Sri Lanka was all out for 323 runs.� Tillakaratne was not out on 104 runs while Ntini was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 86 off 29 overs.� South Africa began their reply and lost Smith (15) at 1 for 45 and Kirsten (11) at 2 for 71 before settling in.� Gibbs and Kallis batted through the rest of the day and at stumps, South Africa was 2 for 183. On the third morning, Sri Lanka ran out Gibbs (92) and bowled Kallis (84) as South Africa slumped to 4 for 219.� However, the home side then batted through to be 4 for 245 at lunch with the deficit just 78 runs.� Sri Lanka struck early in the afternoon session and caught Prince (20) and McKenzie (28) to have South Africa 6 for 264. However, Pollock and Boucher then took control of the game and batted through to tea when the score was 6 for 337.� Sri Lanka eventually caught Boucher (63) and trapped Hall (0) and caught Elworthy (5) before South Africa ended the day at 9 for 421 and a first innings lead of 98 runs. Sri Lanka dismissed Ntini (8) early on the fourth morning to have South Africa all out for 448.� Pollock was left stranded on 99 not out while Vaas, Lakshitha, Fernando and Muralitharan each took two wickets.� Sri Lanka began to erase the 125 run first innings deficit and by lunch they were 1 for 55, having lost Mubarak (15).� During the afternoon session, South Africa dismissed Atapattu (22) and Sangakkara (89) before bad light and a thunderstorm ended play for the day when the score was 3 for 180.� Any result on the final day was now possible, however, Sri Lanka were unlucky to lose so much time that could have been spent building their lead. Sri Lanka needed quick runs on the final morning to set South Africa a challenging target and have a chance of bowling them out.� However, instead they quickly lost seven for 65 before lunch.� Jaywardene (40) was out first ball followed by Arnold (6), Hasantha Fernando (14), Tillakaratne (6), Lakshitha (0), Dilhara Fernando (14) and Vass (17).� Sri Lanka was all out for 245 thus setting South Africa a victory target of 121 runs.� Ntini (4 for 52 off 22 overs) and Kallis (4 for 39 off 14.2 overs) shared the bowling honours.� Sri Lanka fought back through the afternoon as South Africa lost Smith (0) in the first over, then Gibbs (7), Kirsten (11), Kallis (6), Prince (5) and Hall (16) and at tea, South Africa was making a meal of the task at 6 for 98 still 23 runs short.� Sri Lanka bowled McKenzie (39) at 7 for 112 before Boucher (22*) and Pollock (6*) saw the home side home by three wickets.� Dilhara Fernando was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 49 off 12 overs. |
