| First Test Sharjah 31 January - 4 February 2002 Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. West Indies had instant success with the ball when they removed debutant Naved Latif for a duck with only three runs on the board. West Indies spent the rest of the session limiting Pakistan to just 45 runs before dismissing Umar (24) immediately before the lunch break when Pakistan was 2 for 45. Inzamam (10) was out soon after lunch and later on, Younis Khan passed his fifty before falling for 53 at 4 for 94. Pakistan added 92 runs during the sessions and at tea was 4 for 137. Pakistan started to take the ascendancy away from the West Indies during the evening session before West Indies dismissed Razzaq (34) to have Pakistan 5 for 186 at drinks. Pakistan again began reasserting control in the final hour and ended the day at 5 for 230. West Indies needed to quickly wrap up the Pakistani innings on the second morning to keep their chances in this Test alive. Unfortunately, Youhana and Latif had other ideas as they both brought up centuries before going to lunch at 5 for 378 having added 158 runs in the 150 minute session. West Indies finally saw new batsmen appearing at the crease after lunch. Youhana (146) was bowled just after lunch followed later by Saqlain Mushtaq (17). However, by tea, Pakistan was 7 for 438 and in complete control of the Test. The Pakistan tail looked for quick runs to then put the West Indian openers under scrutiny before stumps. Pakistan was finally dismissed for 493 runs after Latif (150), Akhtar (20) and Kaneria (0) fell, leaving Waqar not out on 25. Dillon (3 for 140 off 42 overs) and Gayle (3 for 27 off 7.5 overs) shared the bowling honours. The West Indian openers batted through the remaining 18 overs of play and at stumps had erased 52 runs of the 493 run deficit. West Indies moved the total to 88 before Ganga (20) was trapped in front. Eight runs later Campbell (6) also returned to the pavilion in the same manner. By the time Gayle (68) was out, the West Indians were 3 for 126 and the follow on target of 294 was looking shaky. At lunch, they had moved to total to 3 for 130. During the afternoon session, the West Indies fought back with all of the middle order posting half centuries. Hinds (59) was the first to fall and later in the final over before tea, Hooper (56) was out leg before and the score at tea was 5 for 231 needing another 63 to reach the relative safety of the follow on target. West Indies went on in the final session to pass the follow on target and batted though the entire session without losing a wicket to be 5 for 325 at stumps with another 169 runs to erase the deficit. The Pakistani captain, Waqar, destroyed the remaining West Indian chances of overtaking the Pakistan first innings on the fourth morning. Waqar dismissed Chanderpaul (66) at 6 for 352 and then Hinds (62) was caught. Next Dillon (5) was run out before Waqar finished off Cuffy (0) and Jacobs (6) to dismiss West Indies for 366 after losing five for 14. Waqar returned the best bowling figures with 4 for 93 off 25.3 overs. Pakistan added 21 runs to their 127 runs first innings lead by lunch. West Indies desperately needed to take early wickets in the afternoon session to have any chance in this Test. They caught Naved Latif (20), ran out Umar (23) and then caught Younis Khan (32) to have Pakistan 3 for 109 at tea. Pakistan looked to set a final innings target in a hurry after tea and took the total to 6 for 214 before declaring with Inzamam (49) and Rashid Latif (47*) making the significant contribution while Dillon and Cuffy each claimed two wickets. This left West Indies around 100 overs to make an unlikely 341 runs for victory. At stumps, West Indies was 24 without loss. West Indies took the total to 76 before Ganga (34) was bowled by Akhtar but then batted through to be 1 for 111 at the lunch break with hopes rising of a draw. However, four runs into the afternoon, Gayle (66) was also bowled by Akhtar and the procession started. Hinds (8), fell at 3 for 125 and then at 146 the wheels fell off completely as the West Indies then lost 6 for 25 starting with Campbell (20). Only Hooper (13) passed beyond single figures as the collapsible West Indians staggered to be all out for 171 runs giving victory to Pakistan before tea by 170 runs. Akhtar was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 24 off 16 overs. Second Test Sharjah 7 February - 10 February 2002 West Indies won the toss and elected to field first and had early success when Umar (8) was caught at 1 got 12. However, the West Indians could not hold two other chances that cost them dearly as Pakistan moved to 1 for 93 when lunch was taken. Pakistan took control during the afternoon session as both Afridi and Younis Khan passed their century milestones. Just before the tea break, Afridi (107) was bowled and at tea, Pakistan was 2 for 215 having added 122 runs in the session. West Indies continued the one wicker per session trend and dismissed Inzamam (36) after tea at 3 for 272. However, the Pakistan batsmen continued to build an impregnable position and at stumps were 3 for 344. West Indies desperately needed to take quick wickets and they had considerably more success on the second morning as they dismissed Youhana (60) when Pakistan was 4 for 364 and then Younis Khan (153) and Rashid Latif (16) and by lunch, Pakistan was 6 for 432. The trend continued after lunch as Pakistan lost Saqlain Mushtaq (5), Waqar Younis (2), Shoaib Akhtar (4) and Danish Kaneria (0) to leave Abdur Razzaq not out on 64 runs. In all, Pakistan lost their last seven wickets for 108 runs when they were all out for a commanding 472 runs while Cuffy was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 82 off 29 overs. The West Indians lost Gayle (6) in the nine overs before they went to tea at 1 for 54. Pakistan brought the tourists back to earth in the evening session when they dismissed Wavell Hinds (25), Ganga (6) and Chanderpaul (16) to have West Indies 4 for 164 at stumps needing another 109 runs to pass the follow on target. Pakistan sent Dillon (0) back to the pavilion on the third morning and then Ryan Hinds (11) before the West Indians settled down and batted through to take lunch at 6 for 231. However, Pakistan ran through the remaining wickets in the afternoon session once Jacobs (31) fell at 7 for 236. Hooper (84*) was the unfortunate batsman who had the tail desert him as Wes Indies was all out for 264, nine runs short of the follow on target. Shoaib Akhtar was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 63 off 18 overs. Pakistan decided not to enforce the follow on and at tea was 1 for 28 after losing Shahid Afridi (0) in the ten overs they faced. Pakistan then batted through to stumps without further loss of wickets to be 1 for 130 with an overall lead of 338 runs. Dropped catches haunted the West Indies on the fourth morning until they finally caught Younis Khan (71). Taufeeq Umar (69) followed when he was out lbw one run later at 3 for 145. After losing Inzamam (6), Pakistan went on to be 4 for 204 at lunch. Pakistan continued to add to their lead after lunch and after losing Razzaq (16) they declared at 5 for 225 leaving Youhana (52*) and Rashid Latif (2) the not out batsmen while Dillon with 3 for 57 off 18 was the most successful bowler. West Indies began their chase for 434 runs to claim victory by losing Gayle (4), Ganga (21) and Hooper (1) before going to tea at 3 for 54. More resistance was shown after tea when Pakistan was only able to dismiss Wavell Hinds (34) before drinks were taken during the evening session. However, the wheels fell off in the last hour and West Indies lost 6 for 99 to be all out for 189 runs. Ryan Hinds (46) and Jacobs (35*) made the most significant contribution while Waqar was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 44 as Pakistan won by 244 runs. |
