First Test
Lahore
1 - 3 May 2002

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Land began strongly by dismissing Afridi (0) in the first over. New Zealand then gave Younis Khan (27) a life before dismissing him short time afterwards at 2 for 57. Younis' extra time at the wicket helped Pakistan negate any advantage New Zealand may have had from the pitch and new ball. By lunch, Pakistan had taken command of the game at 2 for 125. New Zealand was unable to breakthrough during the afternoon session. When Nazir brought up his century at tea, Pakistan was 2 for 209. New Zealand dismissed Nazir (127) during the hour after tea when the score was 3 for 261 before Inzamam posted his 16th century. Late in the day Youhana (29) was out and at stumps, Pakistan was 4 for 355 and looking in complete control of the Test.

New Zealand broke through twice on the second morning and dismissed Razzaq (25) and Latif (7). However, with Inzamam passing his second test double century, Pakistan added 99 runs to their score during the session and at lunch were 6 for 454. New Zealand again took two wickets in a session when they need to do more. Saqlain Mushtaq (30) and Waqar Younis (10) were out as Pakistan batted through to tea to be 8 for 586 with Inzamam not out on 287. Akhtar (37) was stumped after tea before Inzamam went on to 329 before being caught. Pakistan was all out for 643 with McMillan the best of the bowlers with 3 for 48 off 18 overs. New Zealand hopes for 20 overs of uneventful batting disappeared as Akhtar sent Horne (4), Richardson (8), Fleming (2) and Harris (2) back to the pavilion, all with shattered stumps. McMillan (15) and Vincent (21) were also out and at stumps, New Zealand was 6 for 58 and the only question was by how much they would lose.

New Zealand collapsed on the third morning and was all out for 73 after Vettori (7), Hart (4), Walker (0) and Martin (0) departed. Akhtar was the outstanding bowler with career best figure of 6 for 11 off 8.2 overs. Pakistan did not think twice about enforcing the follow on was they still enjoyed a first innings lead of 570 runs. Horne (0) was out in the first over and Richardson (32) followed just before New Zealand went to lunch at 2 for 78. The wicket taking pace fell away during the afternoon and Vincent (57) was the only man out as New Zealand went to tea at 3 for 140. It all went horribly wrong after the break for New Zealand as the pavilion seemed to have a revolving door with Harris (43), McMillan (2), Hart (0), Vettori (5), Fleming (66), Tuffey (12) and Martin (0) all being dismissed in the space of 60 runs. New Zealand was all out for 246 runs while Danish Kaneria was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 110 off 32 overs. Pakistan's margin of victory was 324 runs.
