| First Test Lord's 17 - 21 May 2002 Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. England gained the early advantage by running out Jayasuriya (18) and catching Sangakkara (10) before Sri Lanka took control and went to lunch at 2 for 110. Sri Lanka added another 107 runs during the afternoon session while England was unable to break through and at tea, Sri Lanka was 2 for 217. England took a further hour before dismissing Jayawardene (107) at 3 for 261. However, that was their only success during the evening sessions and after Jayawardene recorded his own century, Sri Lanka ended the day at an imposing 3 for 314. After England dropped two chances on the second morning, Sri Lanka continued on from where they left off on day one. England eventually dismissed Atapattu (185) shortly before Sri Lanka went to lunch in complete control at 4 for 412. Sri Lanka ploughed onwards after lunch. However, they lost Arnold (50) and de Silva (88) late in the session and at tea, Sri Lanka was 6 for 495. Vaas (6) fell soon after tea and Zoysa (28) followed before Sri Lanka declared at 8 for 555. Cork was the best of the bowlers with 3 for 93 off 35.3 overs. England then faced eight overs before stumps during which they lost Trescothick (13) and ended the day at 1 for 27. On the third morning, England needed to reach 356 to avoid the follow on and have any hope of avoiding defeat. Their cause was not helped by losing Butcher (17) at 2 for 43. However, the English batsmen patiently saw out the remainder of the session and at lunch they were 2 for 120. Sri Lanka caught Hussain (57) at 3 for 149 before England took the score to 203 and lost Vaughan (64) and Thorpe (27) in two balls to be 5 for 203. At tea, England was struggling at 5 for 211. The evening session saw Sri Lanka take a strangle hold on the match. Stewart (7) was run out straight after play resumed and then at 6 for 237, England lost Flintoff (12) and Cork (0) in three deliveries. Caddick (13) and Crawley (31) finally fell and England was all out for 275 runs, 81 runs short of the follow on target. Fernando (3 for 83 off 22 overs) and Perera (3 for 48 off 11 overs) shared the bowling honours. Sri Lanka enforced the follow on and after seventeen overs, England was 0 for 53 at stumps and still needing another 228 runs to force Sri Lanka to bat again. Sri Lanka dropped two chances early on the fourth morning before England batted through to lunch to be 0 for 147 and having narrowed the deficit to 133 runs. Sri Lanka had more success after lunch and trapped Trescothick (76) in front before Vaughan posted his second Test century. However, Vaughan (115) was unable to go on with it and was out at 2 for 213 before England went to tea at 2 for 230. During the final session England erased the deficit and took the total to 2 for 321 giving them a slender lead of only 41 runs with only one day to play. Sri Lanka needed to take quick wickets on the final morning to have any hope of winning the match. However, all they could manage was the wicket of Hussain (68) just before England went to lunch at 3 for 392 with a lead of 112 runs. England continued to doggedly occupy the crease to save the game during the afternoon session. Butcher reached his century before being run out on 105 runs and Thorpe (65) fell shortly before England went to tea at 5 for 483 with a comfortable 203 run lead. Eventually, England declared at 5 for 429 leaving the Sri Lankans about an hour to get an unlikely 250 runs. Sri Lanka lost Atapattu (7) on the way to ending the day at 1 for 42 when a draw was declared. Second Test Edgbaston 30 May - 3 June 2002 Rain prevented any play before lunch on the first morning.� When play started after lunch, England won the toss and elected to field first.� The decision paid off as England quickly dismissed Atapattu (13) and Jayasuriya (8) at 2 for 23.� Sri Lanka then started to recover and took the score to 2 for 76 before a real collapse occurred.� Sangakkara (16), de Silva (10), Jayawardene (47) and Arnold (1) all fell and at tea, Sri Lanka was 6 for 108 and England was already firmly in control of the match.� Rain again interrupted play during the evening session.� However, when play resumed, England wrapped up the visitor's tail by dismissing Tillakaratne (20), Zoysa (0), Vaas (23) and Fernando (13) to have Sri Lanka all out for 162 runs.� Caddick was the best of the bowlers with 3 for 47 off 17 overs.� England then had to face seven overs during which Vaughan was dropped.� At stumps, England was 0 for 24 and looking to control the match. Sri Lanka needed many wickets on the second morning to get back into the match. However, apart from Vaughan (46) who was caught at 1 for 92, England continued to tighten the screws and by lunch, England was 1 for 146. Sri Lanka was completely unable to overcome the English batting during the afternoon as England stormed past the Sri Lankan's first innings total. Trescothick passed his century and his 150 while Butcher passed 50 before Trescothick 161) was out in the over before tea when England was 2 for 294 with a lead of 132 runs. Sri Lanka had better success during the evening session when Muralitharan dismissed Butcher (94), Hussain (22) and Stewart (7) while England took the score to 5 for 401 at stumps with an overall lead of 239 runs. England continued to add to their lead on the third morning.� Sri Lanka was able to stem the flow of runs by dismissing Flintoff (29), Tudor (3), Giles (0) and Caddick (3) as England lost 4 for 28 to be 9 for 454.� However, Sri Lanka was unable to break the final partnership between Thorpe and Caddick.� In all, Caddick added three runs to what was a 91 run partnership before he was out, leaving Thorpe stranded on 123 not out.� Muralitharan was the best of the Sri Lankan bowlers with 5 for 143 off 64 overs.� England's first innings lead over Sri Lanka was 383 runs and Sri Lanka started badly by losing Jayasuriya (12) in the eighth over and Sangakkara (1) two overs later to be 2 for 30.� The tourists then consolidated and at stumps were 2 for 132 needing a further 252 runs to force England to bat again. Sri Lanka began the fourth morning needing to occupy the crease for as long as possible to save the match, with any thought of winning to wait until the fifth day.� However, England began by dismissing Atapattu (56) in the third over.� Jayawardene (59) followed at 4 for 156 and Sri Lanka was in deep trouble.� The Sri Lankans consolidated went to lunch at 4 for 225. After lunch, they took the total to 233 before Tillakaratne (39) was out and then de Silva (47) fell five runs later.� By this stage, England was not to be denied and after Arnold (4), Fernando (0) and Vaas (28) were out Sri Lanka was all out for 272.� Hoggard was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 92 off 23 overs while England had won by an innings and 111 runs. Third Test Old Trafford 13 - 17 June 2002 England won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers began in rollicking fashion at over five runs per over for the first hour. Sri Lanka managed to slow their progress after dismissing Vaughan (36) at 1 for 66. However, by lunch England had assumed the ascendancy over some wayward bowling and was 1 for 105. Sri Lanka dropped Trescothick twice after lunch when he had 65 runs before finally holding a catch when he had 81 runs at 2 for 192. Sri Lanka was unable to make any further inroads and at tea, England was 2 for 215. Sri Lanka dismissed Hussain (16) after tea and England moved to 3 for 257 when rain interrupted play. Only a short 20 minutes of play between the rain stoppages followed. Sri Lanka dismissed Thorpe (32) and that stumps, England was firmly in control at 4 for 273. Rain delayed play for three hours on the second morning. When play resumed, Butcher passed his fifth Test century. Sri Lanka Dismissed Butcher (123) and then ran out Flintoff (1) at 6 for 361. However, after only 28 overs of play the rain returned and no further play was possible with the score 6 for 377. Inclement weather delayed play by an hour on a third morning when Sri Lanka desperately needed quick wickets.� Sri Lanka caught Tudor (19) at 7 for 400 but was unable to take further wickets before England went to lunch at 7 for 428.� After lunch, Sri Lanka finally dismissed Giles (45) at 8 for 502 and then Stewart (123) one run later.� Hoggard (7) was the last to fall as England was all out for 512 runs.� Fernando (3 for 154 off 29.2 overs) and Muralitharan� (3 for 137 off 60 overs) shared the bowling honours.� Sri Lanka then batted out the seven remaining overs before tea to be 0 for 30.� Sri Lanka tried to get themselves back into the competition during the evening session.� While scoring 4.6 runs per over during the session, Atapattu (10*) had a ball reared on him and broke his finger, upon which he retired hurt and Arnold (62) was caught.� At stumps, Sri Lanka was 1 for 130 needing a further 183 to avoid the follow on. England needed quick wickets and to enforce the follow on if they were to have any hope of winning the match on the fourth morning. Sri Lanka needed quick runs if they wanted to square the series. After dropping an early chance, England prevailed and dismissed Jayawardene (17), Sangakkara (40) and de Silva (18) to have the tourists 4 for 171. Sri Lanka then went to lunch at 4 for 196 needing another 117 runs to avoid the follow on. A period of consolidation followed lunch and Sri Lanka took the total to 219 before the dismissal of Tillakaratne (20) triggered a collapse. Sri Lanka lost Jayasuriya (35), Upashantha (1), Vaas (14) and Muralitharan (6) for only 34 more runs and were all out for 253. Tudor was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 65 off 25 overs. England had no hesitation in enforcing the follow on that Sri Lanka failed to prevent by 60 runs. With Atapattu unable to bat, Sri Lanka lost Jayasuriya (26) before rain ended the day with the score 1 for 63, still needing another 196 to force England to bat again. England was unable to break through in the first hour of play on the fifth morning.� Their only return came when Sangakkara (32) fell shortly after the drinks break at 2 for 110.� By lunch, Sri Lanka had moved the total to 2 for 151, still 108 runs in arrears.� Sri Lanka batted solidly to save the match after lunch and England's only breakthrough in the first hour was Jayawardene (28) at 3 for 170.� During the hour before tea, Arnold converted his third Test century while de Silva (40) was caught.� By tea, Sri Lanka had reduced the deficit to six runs and was 4 for 253.� Ten runs later, the wheels fell off the Sri Lankan batting cart as Arnold (109), Vass (1), Upashantha (3), Fernando (4), Atapattu (6) and Muralitharan (0) were unable to support Tillakaratne (32*) as the last six wickets fell for only 45 runs.� Sri Lanka was all out for 308 runs setting England a victory target of 50 runs in six overs.� Giles was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 62 off 24.2 overs. �England took only five overs to reach the target to win by ten wickets with Trescothick (23*) and Vaughan (24*) to win by ten wickets. |
