months.txt
Names of Months
This deck includes the modern Maaori names for months, as well as traditional names for lunar months. Lunar months cannot be directly translated into the modern calendar. The Maaori year started when the Pleiades star cluster was visible before sunrise. This occurs in summer, sometime between the last two weeks of May through to the middle of June (source: H.W. Williams Maaori Dictionary). These flash cards translate the first Maaori lunar month as June which must be remembered is not strictly correct. It should be noted also that there may be twelve or thirteen lunar months in a year. Translations for the thirteenth month are not given here.
