Our family is not much for wanting to get autographs.  Gilbert does have a Huntsville Stars cap with a few of that AA team's signatures, including future major-league 3B Eric Chavez.  So it was a bit out of character for him to wait over an hour in line to have Andrew's soccer jersey signed by Richland High alumna Hope Solo, who was the goalie on the gold-medal 2008 US women's soccer team.

We don't know whether there are any other local Olympians of note, but we did see some signs around town such as a "Welcome Home Hope Solo" at DQ, and it was apparently announced at school and in the news (and at a staff meeting by one of her relatives who works with Gilbert).

Gilbert's high school, Terra Linda HS, only has two he knows of in its 50 years:  swimmer Rick de Mont (Montreal, 1972) and his weightlifting classmate John Bergman (Seoul, 1988).
