WA Elementary Chess Championship

Near the end of the original Toy Story movie Woody tells Buzz "You missed the truck" as they are flying along, and Buzz replies, "I'm not aiming for the truck" as he dives into the sunroof of the car.  Andrew's chess truck was the 2nd grade trophy at the Eastern Washington Chess Championships, which went to a player Andrew said he had never lost to.

The sunroof was the grade 3-4 team competition.  Schools are ranked according to the top four scores, and Gilbert had noted that with two fourth graders from Amistad having won trophies (but not at the same tournament), the school had a chance to pick up a 2nd or 3rd place trophy if there was a third player with a plus score (the school has had a trophy winner at different tournaments, but usually only one in a grade).

Gilbert had to convince Andrew that if he could win 5 of 5 in K-2 that he could win 3 of 5 in 3-4, and he did even better, winning 4 of 5 (there was another 4, a 3 a 1.5 and a 1, so his addition changed the team score from9.5 to 12.5, which was good for 2nd place).

Beyond getting into the sunroof was landing right in the middle seat, and that target was winning a trophy at the state elementary chess championship tournament.  Part of the move to 3-4 was so that Andrew wouldn't have two simple games and three moderately difficult games, but rather five moderate to difficult games for him as preparation for playing the strongest 2nd graders from across the state.

There were over 200 in his section and Andrew was probably near the upper quartile mark in rating, so his first round was a win against a lower rated player.  After the first round, all the players get paired against people with the same score, so he played another first-round winner who was lower rated than he, but lost.  Now in the 1-1 group, he again lost quickly in the third round, the in the 1-2 group suffered his first three-game losing streak.  In the last round without a chance of winning a trophy he took a long time to win his final game and ended with the same 2-3 result as in 2007 in first grade.  So he made it into the car but probably landed by the driver's seat.

Although Josiah was eligible to enter the 6th grade section by having gotten a 3-2 score at a tournament in the 5-6 section, he decided not to play, but entered an open concurrent tournament.  Originally, that tournament was going to be a 4-round one with K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12/adult sections, but was reorganized to K-2, 3-6, 7-12 and adult sections, moving Josiah from the low end to the high end of his group.  He ended his "elementary" chess career on a good note, winning 3 of 4 and getting a trophy.
