Chapter Twenty Seven

Back at the hotel Pogo poured Linda a good stiff drink. He handed it to her.

"Here. This will steady your nerves."

She drank it down in one gulp. Then, after giving her a minute he turned to the rest of the group and said,

"I am not sure, but I think I found out what we need. It will still take a bit of work. There was a map in Reco's office with all the Syndicate operations marked on it. I picked up a map downstairs and started marking things on it." Everyone moved in to have a closer look. Connor sat next to Linda and put his arm around her. When Pogo was finished marking the map Denise said,

"How do you remember everything?"

"I have selective photographic memory. Sometimes I can turn it on. I was just lucky this was one of those times."

They spent the next couple of hours dividing up the sites in Port Royal so they could check them out the next day. It took a couple of days but they finally realized that neither the lab nor the factory were in Port Royal. They went back to their map and looked at some of the other towns. Ocho Rios had a couple of possibilities but mostly all the operations looked similar to what they had checked out in Port Royal. Then Pogo remembered something. He moved to the map and said,

"I just remembered something. It was so out of the ordinary for a Syndicate operation and may be that is why I put it in the back of my mind. It is north west of Port Royal. The map said it was an archeological dig."

Christine said,

"Why would a group of gangsters sponsor an archeological dig?"

Denise looked around the group to see if anyone had an answer but everyone looked confused. She said,

"OK then, that will be our next stop."

Denise made arrangements with the night manager of the hotel to get an ATV camper with an enclosed environment. It would be waiting fr them just off the golf course the next morning. They all decided to turn in for the night.

They awoke early and after a hearty breakfast the group moved off to the golf course. They found the ATV with instructions on how to get out of the dome and to the archeological site. They headed out with Connor at the wheel. The ATV moved off to the north west and there was large area of swamp. The trip took about 19 hours and during that time everyone except Linda and Connor checked out the equipment and food stuffs on the ATV. They had enough heated E-suits for them all to use as well as weapons and sensor equipment. When Connor figured they were within about a half a kilometer he stopped the ATV in a secluded hollow.

It was still dark, even though with all the swamp gas they could only see a few feet out the window. They decided to get some sleep. After about six hours Denise woke everyone and told them to get read for a walk outside. As everyone put on an E-suit, Denise went around and checked to make sure everyone had their suits on properly. When she was sure she gave them all weapons and an assortment of equipment. They then made their way out of the air lock in the back of the ATV.

Stepping out they found the ground was all rock and ice. There were also puddles of slushy liquid all over the place. The group moved in this environment that was so alien to earth, the last planet they had lived on. Linda looked at her map and figured where they were and where they wanted to go. She pointed off in a direction that looked the same as the rest. It was just a cloud of gas. Denise pulled them all together and gave them a section of rope to tie off to so they wouldn't get lost. She then set her scanner to pick up any life signs within half a kilometer. There was nothing on it so she signaled to move out. Yalp also had a couple of scanners. One was to pick up any power supplies, the other was to search out any unnatural power patterns. Christine set her medical scanner to give her continual readings on the individual members of the group.

With all this done, they started off. Denise led the way while Connor and Linda came second. Then there was Yalp, Christine and Pogo came up the rear. They did not make very good time walking through the alien environment. Denise tried to lead the group around the slush puddles and through the swamp gas. After about twenty minutes Christine called a halt. She had two human readings. The first was off at about 45 degrees, the other was at about 275 degrees. To Denise it seemed very unusual to have guards at a site when there was no wild life on Penates. She signaled that the group should move in between the two and head for the main dig site. They moved slowly as not to make a sound. It took them another ten minutes to make it to the dig site.

Once there they found the swamp gas much thinner and they could see much better. There was a camp off to their right and it was much bigger than they had all anticipated. Linda said,

"I was on a dig when I was in college. This looks similar, but our dig was only to collect small ancient artifacts. Things that would not be of any use to an organization like the Syndicate."

Pogo said,

"I sense a lot of minds underground. There must be more here than we can see." They walked past them and made their way to an unseen cave mouth. The group followed at a discreet distance and saw the cave had been sealed and there was an air lock there.

The group moved back into hiding. Denise said,

"Any ideas as to how to get in there?"

Pogo said,

"I think we should just walk up and in through the door." Then he smiled a smile they could all see even through his tinted visor. "Because I have the access code." At that the rest of the group smiled. The cave mouth was large. About 3 meters high and about 5 meters wide. It was well lit and they could see that it had been cut, but from the wear it had to have been done a long time ago. They walked in as if they belonged there and Pogo punched in the access code. The door slid open with a hydraulic hiss and they walked in. They could now see it was not a change room and Denise was relieved. They closed the outside door and opened the inside.

They were in a large tunnel with a couple of smaller tunnels running off of it. There were also power cables running down the tunnel and these had lights coming off them at about 3 meter intervals. The walls were a glossy black rock that almost looked like smoked glass. It gave the impression that it was unending.
