Chapter Twenty Five

That evening they got all dressed up in their new finery and headed to the Silver Comet. As they walked in, Denise noticed the heavily armed doormen. But as soon as they were inside, she was mesmerized by the decadence of the place. The casino was in front of them and it was huge. She figured it must be about 500 meters long and almost the same in width. What caught her attention the most was a 100 meter by 100 meter chandelier that hung in the middle of the room. Looking at it she thought that it must be worth as much as a small drive ship. She looked around and saw the rest of the group were also amazed that a place like this could exist on the frontier of human exploration.

After a few minutes Denise got back to business. She started to take notice of the security and noticed a lot of men with bulges under their jackets. She motioned for the group to move off to a bar and get a drink. Yulp and Christine moved off together to start their search. Their job was to check out the power grid for the building. Linda and Connor moved off to find out what they could about the Syndicate. Linda went to a craps table and played dumb. While she pumped the men there for information, Connor on the other hand made his way to a Bacaraw table and started to work on a young lady. That left Denise and Pogo. They wandered around the room for a while and then settled themselves at a black jack table to watch the door that was heavily guarded. The black jack went well, but the door was a bust. It turned out to be a cashiers office.

They moved around some more and met up with Yulp and Christine. Denise looked at Yulp and said,

"So, what do you think?"

"You could not fully cut the power to this building for more than twenty seconds. Unless you could do some major sabotage and that would be very difficult."

"I did not think that would be the way to go anyway," replied Denise.

"We have another idea. Gas. But we have also ruled it out. We could not get enough to fill this place," said Yalp.

Denise then looked at Christine and said,

"Do you think their cybernetics plant is here?"

"It could be. The place is huge and who is to say what lies underneath it."

"OK. Keep looking. Hopefully we will find something."

The two groups split up and went about their separate duties of finding out all they could about the Silver Comet.

Linda was at the craps table. She turned to a well dressed middle aged man and asked,

"Is this game fixed or do I stand a chance of winning?" Smiling her most innocent smile.

The man was well manicured with short black hair and a nicely trimmed moustache. He smiled back and Linda could not help but notice he had a gold tooth. He said,

"I can assure you young lady that this table is about as un-fixed as you will find in all of Penates."

She looked around before lowering her voice to say,

"But what about the Syndicate?"

The man looked at her.

"The what?" Then he paused. Continuing he said,

"Oh, that. There are some things around, but the Syndicate does not really exist. The whole thing is just propaganda put out by the Union of Sol on Telemachus."

"Oh really," said Linda. "Thank you. I feel so much safer now. You must let me buy you a drink for putting my mind at ease." She paused for a moment. "But it does take a bit of the excitement out of it all, does it not Mr. ...?"

"Oh, how rude of me. Let me introduce myself. I am Reco Castolla. And who might you be?"

"I am Linda. Linda Hasselhoff. It is a pleasure to meet you. Now, how about that drink?"

"Yes. I would like that very much."

The two of them drank, talked and gambled for the rest of the night. Over the course of the evening she got confirmation that indeed the Silver Comet was the Syndicate Head Quarters. It was above the casino and occupied five floors. The only way to get up there was one of three elevators. Two of them are in the casino while the third was a freight elevator from the basement. They kept talking and she found out about their chemical plants, environmental control and a few other plants in Port Royal; Ocho Rios and Kingstown. She was amazed at how extensive their reach was. They also had hotels, restaurants, stores and hospitals. When Reco mentioned hospitals Linda showed little interest but casually pumped him with a few questions. Eventually she found out they had two hospitals in Port Royal. With a little more niceness, she found out that one of the hospitals was experimenting with cybernetics. At that point, she gave Connor the signal to get her out of there. A couple of minutes Connor walked up to her and said,

"Linda! There you are. I have been looking all over for you. I have blown my budget at the tables. How about you?"

"Actually, I have won so how about I buy you dinner. Oh, by the way, this is my new friend Reco Castolla," she paused, pointing to Reco. Then said to Reco, "This is my old friend Connor Urie." At this Connor held out his hand to shake. Reco took it and tried to squeeze it tighter than normal. Connor just smiled and said,

"We should go. After all, I am leaving tomorrow." He was leaving an opening for her to meet him again if necessary. Reco smiled at that and spoke up.

"Well, if your old friend is leaving tomorrow, how about going to a party with your new friend? Don't answer me now, just come to that elevator over there and show the guard this card." With that, he handed her a card and kissed her hand. He rose quickly and walked away.
