Denise and Pogo had wandered around the hospital for a couple of hours, but did not see anything of interest. There were many interesting things such as a door way that was 5 meters tall and about the same in width. It had a picture above it that looked like a snail. Then there was another pictograph that looked like a human body with an octopus for a head. There also seemed to be some sort of warning about these creatures. The picture seemed to imply that they ate live brains. Denise just nodded to Pogo and said,
"I am glad there is not any of those around."
"I as well, but are we sure?"
"I think I would have remembered seeing an octopus head." They continued on and eventually moved outside. They walked in even large circles around the glass pyramid. It was getting late and they had just seen Linda and Connor moving inside when Pogo stopped. He looked at the surrounding bushes very carefully. Suddenly two cyborgs walked out right in front of him.
Pogo reached out with his mind to blind them to his presence, but that did not help Denise. The cyborgs moved with a grace the previous human had not known. Denise did not have time to draw her weapon, so she kicked one cyborg in the knee and palm thrusted the other in the chest. Even though the cyborgs were caught off guard, Denise had no effect except to get a back hand across the face. The strength of the cyborg was incredible and it knocked her down. She looked up and saw two cyborgs and Pogo all looking down at her. She could tell the cyborgs did not know Pogo was there. Denise figured he must have a plan, but what was it? Denise moved to attack the two cyborgs again, but stopped when Pogo shook his head no and made a walking gesture.
Denise got up and walked around a tree a couple of times while the cyborgs looked confused. Pogo made Denise's image in the cyborgs mind go faster and faster until she was just a blur. Then he made her disappear. The cyborgs started searching but could not see her. Pogo sent Denise a telepathic message. `You have disappeared to them. Let's follow them back to wherever they came from.' Denise nodded and they waited for the cyborgs to give up their search. It did not take long and they started on their way again. This time they headed away from the pyramid hospital. Denise and Pogo followed at a discreet distance. The cyborgs went past the wormhole generator and headed to another large crystal building. This one was more dome shaped. Watching from the cover of vegetation they could see there was a great deal of activity going on.
They watched and saw numerous cyborgs and robots of all kinds coming and going. The domed building seemed to be of a slightly different construction and was obviously not a medical facility of any kind. Pogo tried to use a mind probe, but it was difficult from this distance and the crystal building seemed to give some sort of protection. The few things he did get seemed to revolve around building something or a number of things. He told all this to Denise, but all she had were questions he could not answer. They watched until about halfway through the night, then Denise said,
"Let's get back and see how the others did."
Making their way back they found everyone together talking about what they found. Denise walked in and everyone went quiet. She said,
"Good. Everyone is here. Did anyone have trouble with cyborgs or robots?"
They all looked at her and she could tell the answer was no. She continued, "OK. Then let's hear what you all found out. Linda, you and Connor - where are we?"
Linda looked at Connor and he nodded for her to continue. She said,
"We are 1026 light years from the Lucullus system." Everyone's jaw dropped as they all realized it only took a few seconds to travel this distance. Denise looked at Connor and he nodded yes and said,
"We could not believe it either, so we triple checked it."
Graham asked,
"In which direction did we travel?"
"We went in almost a straight line towards the center of our galaxy," said Linda.
"The life on this planet could have been flourishing for a millennium before the earth was formed."
This silenced the group for a moment then Denise spoke.
"Graham, is the biology on this planet safe?"
Graham looked at her.
"Well, yes and no. If you don't do anything stupid we should all be alright. But the plants on this planet contain some very concentrated drugs in them. Most of the drugs have multiple medicinal values. This lends credence to my theory this whole planet was once a huge medical facility." Christine said,
"It was. We got into the computer and found billions of medical records. There were also medical treatments for different illnesses. Though the most interesting thing we found were some files on medical research that was going on here." She paused for a second before continuing.
"We also found what killed off all the living beings on the planet. It seems there was a rebellion within a federation of planets and the enemy released a killer virus on the planet. All life was dead in about 2 days." She paused again to let this information sink in. She continued,
"We also found some interesting information on an experiment that was being conducted right at the end. It was to put a being into a super computer. The Mechalus have been working on just that for years, but without success I think we should try and find this computer and see if they were successful."
Denise thought about that for a minute before asking,
"Where is this computer supposed to be?"
"The file said Sub-Level 13, but the map of the building did not show any sub-levels." Denise looked at Yalp and said,
"Yalp, I know the architect was alien, but don't center principles apply? Where would the stairs down be?" The little lizard man shifted in his seat before answering.
"No stairs. Whoever built this place did not believe in stairs. The whole place is only accessible by elevators."
Christine looked disappointed. After all, the elevators could not still work after sitting for a millennium. Yalp smiled his usual big grin and continued,
"I have good news and bad news. First the good news. I do have one elevator working." He paused for the praise he did not get, until he looked at Christine and saw the light in her eyes. He smiled and then continued.
"The bad news is you need a security card o get off at what ever level
you want."
