Chapter One
The first few days of the starfall everything went well. Denise had only two minor run-ins with Pogo and his mate. She had handled them very quickly and Pogo had even thanked her for her quick response. She thought, 'Maybe I have misjudged the pair of Fraal.' Then one night at dinner she was watching as one of the ships best waiter was serving them. He had a cart with soup for all his tables and was at the Fraal table. He picked up the soup to put down in front of Pogo when all of a sudden there was a load crashing sound and the ship lurched violently. All manner of creatures was thrown all over the dinning hall. Denise looked around and saw a few who needed help, so she directed the staff and other able bodies to help. Then she heard a bellow that sounded like some sort of primitive animal trapped, Denise spun around to find Pogo with the whole cart of soup on top of him. Denise had a hard time not laughing. She told the waiter who had been serving him to help him. Things had settled down and people were moving back to their tables and getting seated again. Denise then made her way to the phone and was amazed to find it was dead. This was astounding to her because the phone had two back up systems, even if the first was out the second or third should have kicked in at once. She then moved to the door, it opened a couple of inches then it jammed. Grabbing the door she tried to pull it open but it would not move. She thought we need to be able to get out of here I have to get this door open or I could have a real panic on my hands. She then grabbed the door again and tried to open it with every once of strength she had. This time it moved a couple of centimeters, still not enough for her to get out.
She was about to try again when Pogo came up behind her and yelled,
"Did you see what your incompetent waiter did to me?" Denise was now mad, between the door and having to deal with Pogo's petty problems. She looked him right in his sky blue eyes and in her most sarcastic voice said,
"Yes Pogo, I was just going for the captain so we could Space him for such incompetence." Pogo looked at her for a second then stepped past her and grabbed the door. Denise had heard that Fraal were stronger then humans but she did not know how much stronger. The metal in the door screamed but it eventually gave way. She looked at the Fraal and he did not even look like he had stained with the door. This gave her a new respect for the Fraal and from now on she would treat them with a little more respect. She made her way through the door and then turned to look at Pogo. 'This was the entity to be in control here,' she thought.
"I would like you to take control here and make sure no one leaves. I am going to see what has happened." Then Denise turned and walked away down the corridor towards the fight deck.
As she made her way towards the bridge she found people wondering around. No one seemed to know what had happened, or had seen any of the fight crew. Denise told them to go to the dinning hall and she would be back with news as soon as possible. Along the way she also tried a couple of intercoms she had come across, but none of them could get through to the bridge. Being the Purser of the ship she was responsible for security, this implied she had to know her way around and she did. Every time she tried to get up to the fight deck she found an emergency door blocking her way. At first Denise thought it must be an automatic response to what ever has happened. Not being able to open any of the doors she thought, 'I have to check and see what is happening, but how? Maybe she could use the computer to find out what is going on.' She then moved to her office that was just down the corridor and down one fight of stairs. She made it to her office and sat down at her desk, calling her computer up, but nothing happened she could not believe this. This ship had only been out of Space port for a week or so and already it was having major problems. Coming to the conclusion that she would have to go to the observation deck and check out the bridge visually, she got up and was about to leave, then thought, 'Maybe I should grab some supplies.' She opened a locker and found an emergency kit, with a Trauma Pack 1 and some other suff, including her security gauntlet. Her gauntlet would allow her to check out the ships com-system and find out what is wrong with it. Then as a secondary thought she went to the armory and grabbed a Tauri 9 Impact Pistol. This is a stutter weapon, meaning it shoots out blasts of compressed air. At close rang it can powder concrete, but it has a draw back like it does not work in a vacuum, but that did not worry Denise because if she ended up in a vacuum she would be in more trouble then just unarmed.
Leaving her office she decided to go to sickbay, if there was anyone left on the ship that would be where they could be found. Heading to wards sickbay she met up with more passengers wondering the ship, and sent them to the dinning hall. Most of the passengers should be there by now and she wondered how Pogo was doing. As she got closer to the sickbay a low moan could be heard and Denise did not like the sound of it. Walking in she could not believe her eyes, all the beds were full and people were lying on the floor. Christine and her nurse were running around and trying to help everyone at the same time. Denise made her way through the mass of the wounded, and finally caught up with Christine, while she was dealing with a engineering crew man. He had a badly broken arm, but the look on his face is what got Denise's attention. She said to Christine,
"What is wrong with him?"
"Some sort of sever shock. Everyone I have seen from engineering has it. I think something pretty bad has gone on down there."
"Ok I will put it on my list of things to do. The first thing I need to find out is what is going on on the bridge."
"Why don't you go to the observation deck and see what you can see."
"That is a great idea. When you get time can you go to the dinning hall that is were I have been sending every one I find as I search the ship. Do you want me to stay here and help out for awhile?"
"No we are almost caught up and I will probably go up to the dinning hall soon, but before you go I have two small communicators, so at least we can keep in touch."
Denise took it, it was a voice activated head set, so she put it on. She left the sickbay and headed for the observation deck. At about half way there the lights flickered and then went out. She thought, 'Dam now what is happening?' Reaching into her bag she pulled out an emergence light and headed for a maintenance panel. As she was walking she called Christine,
"Christine have the lights gone out where you are?"
"No but I am still in sickbay and it is on a separate system from the rest of the ship."
"Can you look in the hall and see what is going on?" There was silence over the communicator as Christine moved to the door and opened it. Except for the light from sickbay the ship was as black as pitch. She told Denise and Denise said,
"Dam we must be in worse shape then I thought. I am going to keep going. If you can find someone to send to the dinning hall, let them know you still have power."
"Ok I will do my best. Good luck to you." Denise started to run for the observation deck. It did not take her long and she was standing in the dome at the rear of the great ship. She turned to face the Cockpit and the flight crews quarters, and said,
"Oh my GOD!!"
