Chapter Forty Nine
The first thing they needed was a ship, so Denise said,
"Vergus is there a space port around here where we might find a ship?"
"There was a space port, but I would think all the ships would be gone or disabled. I can go and see if there is anything in the space port computers that will meet our requirements." He then flashed out of existence. He was gone less then a blink of an eye and said,
"There is a large freighter there it was new when the attack happened and so should still be in pretty good shape. It might even still fly, and if you are lucky it may even still be capable of a starfall. It is called in your language Defender. Denise smiled and said,
"Defender, now isn't that appropriate, after all we are defending the universe." Vergus then created a map of the area and showed them how to get to the space port..
The group then left the hospital and made there way to the space port. Connor still had the bucket with the silver liquid in it. They figure that Grackless would be able to sense where it was. If that were true then they could use it to get Grackless to the space port. They made their way to the ship and Yalp started to check it out. He went to the engine room while Connor looked over the controls in the bridge. Yalp found that the technology that had been used in the ship was the same as what Vergus had shown him. It was a remarkably resilient form of technology. From his inspection everything looked as if he flicked the switch it would start right up. He thought, 'What the heck,' and activated the power plant. It activated almost instantly and was up to full power almost before he could check the readings. He then moved to the jump engines and checked them out. They were also in perfect order, and should be able to get to drive space with no problem. Now all he had to do was to figure out how to keep it there. He thought maybe he could disable the jump engines after it entered drive space, no that would not work, what if it could be fixed. He knew the power supply needed to be destroyed, not just disabled, but destroyed.
He looked around and an idea came to him. Rooting around with the power supply he wanted to program the computer to go into overload. After working on it for a few minutes he realized he needed some computer help. He called Aleerin to give him a hand. The young Mechalus told him he would be there in a couple of minutes. Yalp kept rooting around in the power plant routines and found a few interesting things that would help. He looked up just as Aleerin was walking in. Yalp explained his plan to cause the computer to overload and melt down the power plant once it was in drive space. Aleerin nodded that he understood and went to work. Yalp made sure everything else was in working order. He had to do a little work on the system engines, but all in all the ship was in good shape. He had it ready for takeoff in less then two hours. When everything was ready he went back and checked on Aleerin. Yalp said,
"So, how is it going? Can you fool the computer into doing what we want?"
"Statement: yes/affirmative."
"Good, how long will it take?"
"Statement: It is done/complete."
"Wow, that was fast, I thought it would take much longer then that." The young Mechalus just smiled.
Connor and Linda had been on the bridge all this time. They had been getting familiar with the controls. It had taken awhile but they thought they had it now. They had even figured out the autopilot and how to use it. The only thing they had not figured out the navigation system. It was obviously based on a different mathematical system, then they were use to. It took a simple observation from Christine that Vergus had only three fingers and a thumb. Their math was based on eight not ten like human math. Once Connor and Linda took this into consideration it all fell into place. They then programmed the navigation system to take the ship into the middle of the galaxy. This was a backup, if Grackless did survive he would hopefully be pulled into the black hole at the middle of the galaxy. The last thing they did was rig the autopilot so it could be activated from a distance. Then they left he control room.
It seem they were the last ones to finish the trap. Graham was still analyzing the Mind Metal, but he would not get to finish Denise went to him and said,
"Time is up, we need our bait." She then took the container of silver liquid into the cargo hold and poured the liquid out onto the floor. Then rushing to the door she locked it behind her. Running out of the ship she found everyone outside. She said,
"Ok, I want everyone to head for the Wormhole Generator. I will stay here and get the ship on it's way." They all looked at each other and then at her, but she continued,
"Don't argue, we do not all have to be here." Pogo nodded to the others and they started on their way.
Denise then sat down to wait. The time past incredibly slow and she thought of home to keep her mind active. When that lost it's effectiveness, she went over the plan again and tried to figure all the things that could go wrong and what she could do when it did. After the third such scenario she was started back to reality by a crashing sound in the underbrush. It was coming from the direction of Grackless's army factory. It was only a second later that see saw the group of Cyborgs making there way through the undergrowth. They walked into the space port and headed for the ship. Denise was worried these had been sent to retrieve the Mind Metal. She watched, then another sound came to her. It was like water sloshing around in a plastic bag.
Then it sort of rolled into the clearing outside of the space port. It looked even larger then before, a large silver blob, but this one had some sort of intelligence behind it. The blob headed for the ship and Denise wondered if it would fit. The blob stopped in front of the ship and almost blocked it from Denise's sight. It did not move for a couple of minutes and Denise wondered if it could sense the trap. Her patience payed off as it moved into the ship. It must have had some why of communicating with the Cyborgs, because they surrounded the ship in a protective ring. When it was 90% in the ship Denise sent the signal.
The door started to close and the silver liquid seemed to accelerate
it's entry into the ship. When the door had closed she activated the launch
sequence. At this the Cyborgs all turned and started to fire at the ship.
The Black light of their lasers seemed to bounce right off, but they kept
firing. Then all of a sudden they stopped and turned as if were looking
for something. Denise realized it was her.
