Chapter Forty Eight
Denise prayed a little prayer that they were not committing suicide. As the monstrosity took it's third step they both opened fire, on the floor where his foot should come down. There were explosions from the weapons fire, just as the figure sifted it's weight to the damaged floor. The room shook from both the explosions and the walking of the monster. Then Denise heard what she had been hoping for. The floor was cracking, The monster did not hear it for it kept coming and Denise and Connor gave another blast. The creature laughed and said,
"Your little weapons can not hurt Emperor Grackless, ruler of the universe." Then the floor started to give way. At first it only cracked and slightly shifted, Then a large section under Grackless gave away. They could not see what happened then as there was dust and debris flying everywhere. The hole got bigger as more and more of Grackless fell through. His hands flew out and grabbed at the edge, only to have a large piece break off and follow him down. The hole came to within a meter of the two standing by the door at that point.
Denise took a long breath and gave Connor a smile. It looked as if they had made it. She moved to the edge and looked down into the hole. Grackless had gone all the way down to the first floor. On the way down he had wiped out a good portion of his army, and now all that was left was a large pile of wrecked robots and a big puddle of silver liquid. It looked as if it were all over with. Connor said,
"Lets get out of here, it takes a lot out of me saving the universe." She smiled at him and then playfully put him into a head lock, she then rubbed his head to mess up his hair saying,
"Yes, yes you did save the universe, now lets get back to the rest of the group, then on to Penates, and finally on to home."
They then walked to the door and Denise kicked it open. Connor said,
"Why did you not do that before?" She looked confused and said,
"The cave in was have weakened the door somehow." The stairs were still there and they quickly made there way down. When they got to the second floor they found only one dragon left, Connor said,
"I would love to talk to him."
"Some other time," said Denise. They had to work there way around the wall where there was still some floor left, in order to make it to the stairs. These stairs were not in good shape. The bottom third of the stairs were gone. They had to climb down as far as they could then jump from there. It was a good three meter drop and when Denise landed she let out a little scream. Connor turned to see that her right ankle was at an unusual angle. He rushed to her and checked it out, not broken but very badly twisted. She would be able to walk on it but it will be extremely painful. He helped her up and she let out another scream as soon as she tried to put any weight on it. He made her a make shift crutch from some of the debris, and she could move around a little better. She walked around on it and then started moving for the door.
She stopped half way to the door and said,
"Do you notice anything unusual?" He looked around at the wreckage and almost laughed. He said,
"We wrecked another building."
"No serious, look at the silver liquid." He looked and at first did not really notice anything, except that it was all moving. Then he noticed, it was all moving to the center of the room. He picked up a jug and scooped up some of the liquid. There we can take this back and analysis it. Just as he put the lid on the liquid tried to get out of the container. It was almost as if it had a mind of it's own. He had never seen anything like it. The jug move and shifted in his hands trying to get out. Connor said,
"Lets get out of here," and Denise hobbled to the door with him following.
They made there way back as quickly as possible, but with Denise's bad leg it took them about four hours. By the time they got back her ankle was so badly swollen she could barley move. Christine got her onto a gravity chair and wheeled her into an examination room. She activated the medical scanner and it did the rest. Connor went down to see Vergus, but met Yalp. He told him the story and Yalp asked to see the silver liquid. He looked at it closely and took a few readings, then said,
"We are in serious trouble. This looks like what Vergus's people call Mind Metal. If a mind gets into it, it can shape itself into almost anything. It is immune to most attacks and can form any weapon it chooses to."
"But all it is, is a big puddle right now, it can't hurt us, can it?"
"Your right it can't do anything if it can't reassociate, or in laymen's terms, get back together. We have to get that sample off the planet. It will destroy the whole planet if it has to, to get that back. If we can get it away from Grackless and someplace where he can not get at it, he will never be able to take shape again."
"Why would he not just make more?"
"Well he could, but it would not help. The creation process is also the bonding process. If there was as much there as you said it probable took him a million years to produce. I don't think he will want to wait that long again. I know I would not."
"So can we destroy the stuff?"
"Maybe if we can send it into a sun or maybe a blackhole, but I don't know if even either of those will work."
"Great so we have an indestructible silver blob that will hunt us to the ends of the universe. Let's talk to Vergus and see if he has any answers."
They made their way down stairs and found the rest of the group waiting for them. Denise was walking around as if nothing had happened. Grady and Finster were also there and seemed to be back to normal, or as normal as two cyborgs could be. Yalp explained to the group what Emperor Grackless had become and Vergus said,
"I thought that was what Denise had described." Yalp asked,
"Is there any way to destroy this Mind Metal and who is in it?"
"We were working on some theories, but there was no conclusive evidence it would work. We know for a fact that heat will not destroy it. Either will any form of known radiation. The most promising idea was a complete lack of heat and radiation, but where do you find such an environment?" Connor looked at them and said,
"That is obvious. We have to send it into drive space. Readings say
that it has no radiation that we know of and the temperature is absolute
zero."
