Chapter Fifty One
The group dove for cover as the Cyborgs and Robots opened fire. From what Denise could tell there were between ten and fifteen of them. She knew they could not defeat that many of them, so she said,
"Everyone move back to the Portal room. Connor keep us covered." Connor nodded and sent off a couple of blasts from his AGC-7 Autofletchette shotgun. The needles flew out and took off a leg of the closest Cyborg. He then moved back towards the door to the Portal room and found some more cover, and took a couple of more shoots. The AGC was a load weapon and the sound almost deafened Connor, But this time he hit a Robot right in the chest. The hundreds of needles shredded the Robots chest and it's lights went out. He then saw a couple of laser blasts come from the direction of the Portal door. The first one defected off a Robot while the second drilled a whole through the hip of a Cyborg. The Cyborg fell to the ground and started to dissolve. He moved into the Portal room and found cover by the door. He noticed that the attacks were being more carful now and not just walking towards them.
Denise said,
"Anyone with an energy weapon fire at the Cyborgs only. The Robots have a defector shield, so concentrate projectile weapons on them." They waited for a second and then a borage of fire came at them. There was black laser fire hitting everywhere, and one caught Martine in the shoulder. She went down and yelled,
"Graham help me!" He saw her down and moved to cover her from anymore fire. This caused him to get hit, Graham got it right in the behind. Christine saw them go down and started to move towards them, When a laser blast exploded the rock just inches from her head an she had to head back under cover. She waited a second and then ran to the two down people. She pulled them behind as much cover as was possible. Then she got out her medical gauntlet and started to take some readings. Martine was out cold from the pain, but was not hurt enough to put her life in danger. Christine then checked out Graham. He reached up and grabbed her arm, and said,
"Is she alright?" Christine smiled at him and said,
"Yes, she will be just fine, but now I need to look at your wound." She then scanned his behind. Christine smiled and gave Graham a shot in the behind. She said,
"I would not worry you will be right as rain in no time at all, but I think you have something that is really bad. You should not have left cover to help her, they would not shot at someone who is down." Graham blushed and said,
"She will not even know I exist once she is gone from here."
"Oh right, that is why she called out your name."Then Christine moved off and got to a protective area where she could give cover fire.
Denise, Connor and Pogo were all firing at their attackers. They had not taken anymore out of action, but the attackers were not moving either. It looked as if it was turning into a standoff, but Denise knew that was to the other sides advantage. Denise was running different tactics through her head, but nothing had even odds let alone good odds. The whole situation was looking hopeless.
Then she saw one of the Robots in the back explode. Then there was two more of the attackers down and out of commission from big holes in them. Denise could not see what was going on, but she figured this was their best chance. She said,
"Ok people, give it all you've got." Then they moved out to take the fight to them. There were only a couple that were still concentrating on the Portal door. Denise opened fire on one while the other two fired on another one. When they ducked undercover Denise made a move out of the room, she dove and rolled for cover. Then she came up firing, the blast took a Cyborg right in the chest and burned a hole right through him. It crumpled to the ground and started to dissolve. She could now see who was attacking from the other end, she could not believe it, they were Concord Marines in full battle armor. They were kicking the Robots and Cyborgs all over the cave, so Denise decided to stay put. She turned to Connor and Pogo and said,
"Just stay put the Marines are here, just keep those last two pinned down." They did as she said and waited for the Marines to save the day. The battle was intense as there were energy beams all over the place, when they missed their targets they would kick up a real big cloud of dust. This was good as far as Denise was concerned, because it helped cover the smell of burnt flesh. She felt sorry for them, after all they may have all been like Finster and Grady. Just the wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time.
After a couple of minutes there was a deafening silence. Denise looked out from behind her cover and looked up at the business end of three rifles. She said,
"Wait we are the one you were sent to get." Then she mumbled, "At least I hope we were." A voice came out of one of the suits of Battle Armor, it said,
"You are the group the Magistrate sent down?" Denise nodded her head yes. The man then handed her a head set to his communicator and she said,
"Hello, who is this?"
"Ah Denise, I can call you Denise can't I?"
"Yes of course you can Magistrate. I thank you for the rescue, but I have some bad new for you. The Portal was damaged as we came back through, I don't think it works any more."
"We can talk when you get back to the Lighthouse. Please let me talk to the Major." She handed back the communicator and the major talked for awhile.
He put the communicator away and said,
"Your ship is waiting for you, we have orders to stay here and clean up." Denise waved for her people to move out, and they quickly made there way to the Warbird. When they got there Beighur asked,
"So do we still have to worry about the Jamaican Syndicate?"
"Yes, by not for having an army of Cyborgs." Beighur smiled, then said,
"That is good. I did not want to fight an army of those Cyborgs." Huntly then smiled and said,
"Good now we can get back to the statu quo." Beighur looked at her and said,
"Not for you." Huntly looked hurt, and said,
"You have nothing on me."
"No you are right, but Martine's father has a legitimate job for you. He will also help you get your money and crew out of the Verge and away from Lucullus, if you want it that is?" Huntly looked at him a little embarrassed and said,
"How did you know?" He just winked at her.
They then lifted off and headed for the Lighthouse. It had moved from
orbiting Penates to orbiting Telemachus. It took them a couple hours to
get there.
