Christine went to school on the following Monday. First she went to class, but after that she headed to the library. It was a large old building that looked as if it should have been demolished twenty years ago. It had the smell of old musty books, for a university library it was in terrible shape. Going to the medical section she started to look up information on transporting organs for transplant. There was a great deal of information on organ transplanting but nothing on transporting those organs. She kept looking, and after a couple of hours, she finally found a little out of date information.
This was not good enough for her so she went to see her staff advisor. Who just happened to be Professor Wagner. This made her a little nervous as his name had been in Hal Robertson's medical records. Though maybe that was all just a coincident. After all he had done some of the most innovative research in transplanting organs in Canada. He was not busy and she got in right away. Sitting in a very old, woody smelling, Oxford style office, she came right to the point.
"Sir, I need information on the transportation of organs for transplant." He looked at her and said,
"That is most curious. Someone from the Canadian Medical association was in here for the same information about two weeks ago. I will tell you what I told them. The AMA has just published a standards paper on the transportation of organs for transplanting. It sets the standards for there transportation. It is in the library down town."
Christine then asked,
"Who was the other person, and what information did they ask for?"
"I am sorry I can not remember. I see a lot of people everyday, but you may be able to find out at the library." Christine thanked him and left for her next class. She knew she could not make it to the down town library that day. At work that night she was talking to Darren and Dave.
"I think I may have found out more than I was looking for." She told them about the meeting with her staff advisor. They both looked at her and Dave said,
"You had better take care. We might be getting closer than we ever expected. Do you want one of us to come with you?" At their comments they could see that she became a little afraid.
"Do you really think there could be any danger?" Dave and Darren looked at each other then Darren said,
"No, not really, but it is better to be safe than sorry, and more eyes will make it easier to find the material."
"Well I guess it would not hurt to have another pair of eyes to help with the research." They planned to meet at the library in the morning.
The next day the three of them met outside the library. The day was warm with a bright sun shining down on them and it lifted a bit of the gloom that Christine felt. With weather like this she could not imagine that she was in any sort of danger. They went in to the old stone building that housed the library. After a couple of minutes on the computer that Christine had accessed with her student card they found the article they were looking for. It was not available. They were frustrated for the moment then Darren noticed there was a reference for the article. He said,
"Maybe that will have the information we need? As he pointed at the reference on the screen. They looked it up and found it was a pamphlet for a courier company. The company was advertising that they could ship organs for transplant to any location in the world. Making a copy of the pamphlet there was nothing else they could do. Darren said,
"Maybe we should look into this company. The organs may have been transported by them."
"Well maybe you or Dave could do that today?"
"I don't think so we both have to work lunch today, but I think we should find out who has that article."
They went back to the first article and looked up who had it out. They needed to know how long they had had it and when it was do back. They found that it was already over due. There was no name as to who had it only a student number. Darren wrote down the student number. He then gained access to the main computer for the school. He punched in the student number. It came back that there was no such student number. Darren said,
"That is very unusual, how did someone get a student number, but is not a student. Maybe it is not student, it could be someone from administration or maybe even a Professor?" Christine then suggested he try the name, Johnathon Wagner. The computer came back once again that there was no such student.
"Now I know something is wrong a Professor has to have a card for the library," said Darren. They could not figure out what was going on. Dave said,
"Maybe the Professors are not recorded like the student body. They would probably have a different set of numbers, as would administration personal. You know to identify them as non-students."
"Maybe, but I don't have time to look into that now. I have to go to class," said Christine. They left the library and Christine continued, "I am off, I will see you tonight at work." Dave and Darren left, as they needed to get to work themselves.
That afternoon after they had finished lunch Dave and Darren were sitting having coffee when the manager came up and introduced them to a new waiter. He sat down and joined them saying in a Jamaican accent,
"My name is Denzel. It is nice to meet you guys. This place is amazing it is like nothing I ever saw back home."
"Oh and where is home?" said Dave.
"I have just come to this country from Jamaica." He was tall and thin but not frail by any means. Dave thought this guy could probably handle himself in most situations. Dave asked,
"Where are you from in Jamaica?"
"The hills outside of Montigo Bay, but things are bad there that is why I came to Canada." Darren then asked,
"So how did you end up at Frankie's?"
"Your Bureau of Immigration helped me find this job." To Darren and Dave this sounded a little weird, but that was typical at Frankie's, they were probably getting some sort of assistance for his wages. The other unusual thing about the whole setup was that Denzel did not go through the usual training, he was just being started on the floor.
Dave and Darren went back to talking about the morning's activities at the library. Dave noticed that the new guy, Denzel was very interested in what they were saying. He even asked a few questions when there was a lull in the conversation. He tried to convince them to dismiss the student number that did not exist as unimportant. He said,
"You know how unreliable computers can be it is probably just a mix-up." He was very persuasive and both Dave and Darren had almost dismissed the unidentified student number. Then they noticed he wanted them to forget the whole thing this made them both suspicious. Denzel saw their resistance and did not push it. He even changed his tune and tried to get involved in the investigation. Offering to help find the mystery student number.
They did not get into it anymore because they had to start work. Over the course of the evening Denzel did all he could to get on the good side of both Denise and Christine. He was a good waiter and helped out the two girls as much as possible. At the end of the night he tried to build up his relationship with Dave by giving him an extra large tip out. Dave thanked him but it just added to his suspicion. Dave suspicions where up even more when he got to the bar and found Denzel there. Somehow he had manipulated his way into going out for drinks after work with everyone else. Dave gave his head a little shake; this whole thing was making him a little paranoid.
At the pub Graham was talking with Suzanne, when Dave sat down. Denzel had been introduced to everyone, so they ordered drinks and waited for Chris. When Chris came in the introductions started over again. Chris looked at Dave and Darren, he noticed they were only being civil to Denzel. Chris also noticed that Denzel had positioned himself in-between Denise and Christine, which did not thrill him. He ordered a drink and they got down to business. Christine started by telling everyone about her conversation with her staff adviser at school. Then she went into what they found out at the library. Darren said,
"If the mystery student is the murderer he certainly knows how to cover his tracks. If it is not him then we have stumbled onto another mystery."
"Being the new comer to the group I would be more then willing to look into this mystery students." Dave and Darren tried to catch everyone's attention. They did not like the idea of this new comer looking into the mystery student. Denise and Christine said,
"That would be a great idea."
"Yes I would appreciate the help," said Darren. The two girls gave him a look that said,
'What's up?'
While all this was going on Graham had been looking at the pamphlet for the Courier Company that Darren had got from the computer. He was thinking this would be the best way to get the organs out of the country. He also thought he had seen it before, but could not remember where. He knew it would come to him eventually so he just put the pamphlet in his pocket. Graham then noticed that both Dave and Darren were keeping a close watch on Denzel. Dave got up to go to the washroom and Graham followed him. Once in the washroom Graham said,
"OK what is it about this guy?" Dave explained the conversation they had had that afternoon. Graham said,
"So it does not sound that unusual."
"No your right, but pair that with the fact that no one trained him and his section was right in-between Christine and Denise. The guy doesn't know anyone and his first day on the job he ends up here."
"All right so it sounds a little fishy, but what do you think is up?"
"I don't know. It's just weird."
"Well give the guy a break, maybe it is all just a coincidence. Beside Darren will keep an eye on him. If there is something wrong with him it is better to have him at ease. That way maybe he will let something slip." Dave nodded agreement and they went back to the table.
They all finished their drinks and headed home. When Graham got into his car he remembered where he had seen the pamphlet before. The logo had been the same as the piece of paper he had used to wipe the blood off of his feet that night. Quickly he started to root through the garbage bag in his car. His heart quickened because he knew that if he found it, it would be their first real clue. It took a little digging but he finally found it. It was not a pamphlet but a weigh bill from the Courier Company.
Graham hurried home and turned on his computer. Finding the web site for the Courier Company on the weigh bill he enters it. He was lucky they had a real time tracking and a billing information window. All he need to access the information was on the weigh bill. The first thing he checked out was if the package was an organ shipment. It was, so he tried to find out the destination. This was not as easy as he had hoped. The package had already been delivered and so the tracking was finished.
He then went back to the billing window and found they had been charged for a rush international delivery. Working further down the billing page he came to a billing address. It was San Medico Institution, La Paz, Bolivia. This all now was starting to make sense; transplanted organs would have to go to a medical center somewhere. He then tried to find where they came from. After about another twenty minutes of frustration he finally got it. They were picked up at main reception at the Markham Stouffville Hospital. Graham thought on that, coming to the conclusion that anyone could have left them there. The hospital was probably a dead end but he would look into it in the morning.
He got back on the web and found out all the information he could on San Medico Institution. He was very disappointed with the little bit he found. The Institution was only about five years old. It seemed to cater to the very wealthy and because of that it kept a low profile. Even in a medical data bank there was not very much information. The one thing he did get from an article is that it specialized in transplant operations. The article said it had an amazing 93% success rate. The excepted reason for their success was said to be some sort of experimental drug therapy. The AMA gave it one of the highest ratings for a medical treatment facility either inside or outside of the United States. Though there was also a warning. The AMA did not approve the experimental drug therapy. The AMA did say that they had no information on the therapy, only that it seemed to work very well.
That was about all the information he could find. Graham looked at the clock to find it was 6 AM. He thought 'I had better get some sleep,' so he went to bed. While he was sleeping away the day Darren and Denzel were hard at work. They had met outside the down town library. Darren was still not sure about this guy, but least he was punctual. They went in. Their plan of attack was to look through the university registration records. The student numbers were not assigned in sequence so they would have to look through them all. Darren said,
"Lets start by checking the universities administration there should be less of them then Professors, that will be quicker."
"But what if he is a student and this whole thing is just a computer glitch? We could miss him."
"OK, we will check the whole thing," said Darren. Then he thought, 'how does Denzel know it is a man? We do not know if the murderer is a male or female, but the way he talks he seems to know it is a guy. This guy gives me the willies, he knows something.'
They had been at it for a couple of hours when Darren said,
"I need a break. I am going for something to drink."
"I will keep looking."
Darren left going to the cafeteria. He grabbed a can of coke, paid for it and sat down next to a couple of students. They were talking about an exam coming, up when one said,
"His theory on organ transplants are very unusual." Darren listened more closely this time, as the two students went on.
"The process described does not make any sense."
"But Professor Wagner said it works." At that point Darren interrupted them, by saying,
"Excuse me I did not mean to listen to your conversation but was that Johnathon Wagner you were talking about?" The two students looked at him, then one said,
"I think his first name is Johnathon but you know how professors are, all that formality, Sir this or Professor that." Darren nodded that he understood then thanked them as he left. Every time we turn around this Professor's name is coming up. It hit him in a flash of insight; why had Christine given him that name, now I hear it again in the context with organ transplanting, they are not looking for a student, but a professor. The Professor in question is one Professor Johnathon Wagner. Dave had said that maybe the staff of the university had a different access system to get into the library. That is why we could not find out who had the book from the computer. The university staff must be on a different system, but why would he need all the information on transplanting organs. He knows more about transplants then all most anyone in Canada. He is not just any Professor, but Professor Johnathon Wager, the Dean of the Medical Department and a leading researcher in the field of organ transplants. Darren hurried back to the library. As he sat down Denzel said,
"While you were gone I talked to the librarian, and she told me who all has access to the library. She said the number looked like it might be a Professor number. The Professors and university employs all have cards. She also said the professor's do not get their numbers through the same system as the students, so the numbers would be similar, but have a specific code to identify them. Though if you try to access a Professor's number you will not get a name." Darren looked at him and thought, 'now that is interesting, he just happened to come up with that.' Then he said,
"I guess we should start at the beginning and see what we can find." Darren let Denzel look through the professor's numbers, while he went straight to look at Professor Wager's number.
Graham had arisen from his slumber by this time and thought it best to go up and check out the hospital. He got himself ready and hoped into his car. Driving up there he was nervous and his stomach churned. Thinking, 'how was going to get the information he needed,' this got his mind focused. He eventually came up with a plan. He would pretended to be from the Courier Company, so he took a clipboard from the car and walked into the reception area. Going to the main desk he found the person who looked after pick-ups and deliveries. Graham told her that he was from the Courier Company. He asked,
"Could you tell me who left the package for pick-up a couple of days ago." then he gave her the date of the pick up he had got from the Internet. "It seems we have lost that information."
"Well we are not suppose to give out any information, but you seem to have everything else." She moved into the back and grabbed a big book. It was a ledger that she used to record all the information on pick-ups and deliveries. She opened it up and flipped a couple of pages. Looking up she said,
"Here it is. It came down from Professor Wagner's office. Is that all you needed?" Graham sheepishly said as if trying to hide a mistake, said,
"If you could tell me how it was labeled I will be out of your hair." She smiled and said,
"It was labeled medical supplies rush delivery."
"Thank you, you have been a big help, I don't know how I lost this information." He then gave her, his best smile and left.
Denzel was still hard at work in the library. When he found Professor Johnathon Wagner's library registration number. He said,
"I found him, he is not only a Professor but also the Dean of the Medical Department." They then started to look into Johnathon Wagner's history, and found that he was on the board of numerous hospitals in the Toronto area as well as some international hospitals. The man was obviously a well-respected member of his profession. A little more digging and they found that he was no longer a practicing doctor. He was mostly involved in some sort of very secretive medical research. Neither of them could find anything on what his research project was. They also found that he was very high up in the Canadian Medical Association. As a matter of fact he was the Vise President in charge of Research.
Darren thought this is all very impressive for a man whose picture did not put him past Forty. He then photocopied some of the more important documents. While he was making notes on the rest of the information Denzel said,
"Now that we know more about this man don't you think it's a little ridiculous that he could be involved in something like this?"
"You maybe right but, people have done some very strange things in the name of, The Betterment of Mankind. I think we should tell the rest of the group what we found and compare this information with any they found out, then we can make an informed decision."
"Yes of course, but do we need all, this information?"
"It is better to be prepared to answer any and all questions. There will be doubt in peoples minds if we don't have all the answers."
"I see what you mean, good thinking." Darren gave him a sarcastic little smile, then went back to work. Denzel then said,
"I am going to get on my way, I will see you later." Darren just waved him off and went back to work.
Denzel left, he headed straight to a pay phone outside by the road. He dialed a number and it was answered with an abrupt, yes. Denzel said,
"We have to meet things are worse than we thought." The voice then said,
"One hour. The usual spot." The line went dead. He slowly hung up the phone. He did not want to meet with his superior; the man was a nut. Denzel had never seen him that he knew of. When they met like this he stayed hidden and used a voice synthesizer to hide his voice. Denzel did not like taking orders from someone he could not identify. Especially when the person's order had never shown any compassion .It worried him, but what could he do? Starting down the street, he walked slowly to the area of the meeting all the while making sure he was not being followed. It was second nature to him, the counter surveillance techniques. The meeting spot was the lowest level of the underground parking at the city hall. Denzel took the stairs as he always did, slowly and stopping occasionally to listening for anything unusual. The deeper he got the colder it got, and it seemed to suit the whole scenario. A quote popped into his head. 'Walking into the bowels of hell, their blood seemed to freeze in their veins.' He could not remember where it was from, but it seemed to fit this assignment perfectly. At the door out to the car park area he stopped. After listening for about five minutes, there was no sound in the stairwell, so he walked out into the car park.
In the car park area he headed for the usual meeting place. It was a large vent in the wall on the opposite side of the garage. His steps echoed off the walls and it sounded like he was in a tomb. A slight chill went up his spine. When he was about five feet from the vent he turned to survey the garage again, it was empty of human life. Before he could turn back, a voice said,
"Report." Denzel froze in place. This man was one of the few people in the world that he feared. He said with a slight shake to his voice,
"The group has come up with the connection to the Professor. They have no proof but there are enough little things to convince even the stupidest cop. They do not know about the clinic yet and if we can contain the Professor I don't think they ever will." There was a moment of silence, then he continued. "Do you want me to contact the Professor?"
"No! You just try to keep those pesky people in line; you have not done anything so far. Now get out of here."
Denzel did not hesitate he walked away as quickly as he could. Going straight home he laid down. He did not want to have to go in to the restaurant, for that matter he just wanted to get away. He was getting sick and tired of the spying, the lying and most of all, the killing. Having to report to a creep like the vent man did not help matters, at all. Meetings with the vent man always made him feel this way; maybe it was time to get out of the game. That would be something he would look into, but now he had to get up and get ready. The security of the nation was in his hands again. Denzel had had a long and distinguished career. He had started of as a grunt in the military at the age of eighteen. Then he moved into military intelligence and also trained with the Special forces. He had dune so well that he had even been invited to train with the American elite force called the Delta Force. Denzel had served in a number of operations from information gathering to a couple of assassinations. He had never killed anyone he did not feel deserved it. This had been do to luck as he did not like killing, he just knew sometimes it was necessary.
As far as the world was concerned Denzel was a null person. He had no identity or even a past; this was fine with him, as he had no family or relatives of any kind that he knew of. Though over the years Denzel had set up a couple of identities for his own use. He had also put away a great deal of cash that had come into his hands from all sorts of sources. The more he thought about it the more he thought it was time to get out. As soon as this mission was over he would run away and live the good life on a small island someplace. For now he had to go to Frankie's and see what he could do about these do gooder's? He sat down and thought about it. They were not professionals so maybe he could just scare them into leaving it alone. What would be the best way to get them to forget the whole thing? Then it hit him a small smoke bomb in each of their cars with a small warning note. He had to be at work soon so he had to get them ready quickly. It took him about half an hour to get all seven of them made. They were simple little things but they would make a lot of noise and a great deal of smoke. He then made his way to Frankie's, finding five of the cars all ready there he quickly hooked them up to explode when the car was started. He had just finished when Christine drove in. She noticed him over by Graham's car, she did not think much of it and called out to him to come and have a coffee before they started.
The two of them went inside together, but Denzel said,
"I have to get changed. Oh shit I left my uniform in the car. I will be right back." He then left her and went back outside. Going to Christine's car he hooked up that bomb. He was as quick as his skill and professionalism would let him go. It was getting close to opening time and more and more people were around. Just having finished he was going inside when Denise pulled up. He waved to her and went into the restaurant and got changed for his shift. He would have to go out sometime during the night and booby trap Denise's truck. It was a slow night and he had no problem sneaking out to do the last one. He was not even missed by his tables let alone any of the staff. At the end of the night he said his good nights and left early. Going around the corner he found a place to watch.
The group all came out at the same time and headed for there cars. They must have almost all started their cars at the same time, for the explosions were so close together he could not tell if they had all gone off. Looking though a set of night vision goggles that he kept in his car he saw smoke coming out of all the hoods. A small smile of satisfaction crossed his face. Then he wondered if anyone had been hurt. Looking through the glasses again he counted the number of people crawling around, and identified them. Good everyone seemed to be all right; he did not need to make a martyr out of anyone.
Denise had been sitting in her car thinking what a boring night, if it keeps up like she was going to have to look for another job. She put the key into the ignition and turned it. Then she saw her life flash before her eyes along with a flash that blew her hood open. Then there was nothing but smoke. It filled the cab and she started to choke. Quickly jumping out of her truck she crawled clear of the smoke. Her eyes were watering and see could barely see anything else. The smell of the smoke still filled her nostrils but at least she could get air into her lungs. She gulped in the air and her eyes slowly cleared to the point where she could see everyone else was in the same state as her. It did not take long and they were all back to normal.
Darren was the first to notice a note in his car. It said,
You are into something that is way over your head. Get out while you still have one.
A friend.
He said,
"Look at this I got a note to go with the smoke bomb." They all came over, and looked to see what it said.
"Did anyone else get a note to go with their little explosion?" They all moved back to their cars and looked around. Eventually everyone found one. They were all exactly the same and Darren figured it would be impossible to trace them. Dave then started to look the cars over. After looking over three of them he said,
"This guy or gal must be very good. I can't find any damage to any of the cars. We can get in and drive away right now." Denise said,
"So this person is really trying to just keep us safe, scared but safe. Does anyone think we should report this to the police?" They all looked around at each other but no one really seemed to know what to do. Then Dave said,
"I think we should go for a drink. That explosion took a lot out of me." They all nodded that they could use a drink. Dave started to check out the other cars. Needing to know if they were all right. Suzanne said,
"Even if we report this to the police what can they do?"
"OK, so we do not report it. Are we going to take the threat serious?" said Christine.
"Well I think we should be careful but I do not think they would really do anything to us. I think we should go on and see if we can find out what is so important. What do the rest of you think?" said Suzanne.
"Suz, who ever did this could just as easily put real bombs in our cars."
"You may be right but I don't think they want to hurt us." The rest of the group nodded their agreement. Suzanne continued, "so I guess we should go to the bar as planed?"
They got into their cars and slowly started them up. There were no more
explosions and everyone's car seemed to work just fine. They drove to the
bar in a group just in case someone had a problem but it was not necessary.
