After thinking about it for a while, Suzanne was more mad then scared about being shot at. She wanted to know who and why? She figured her only lead was AI development, so that was where she was going to start. She still had the sheet that the security guard, had given her, so she headed to school. At school she went straight to the library and looked up the company in Fortune 500. It was their and much closer to the top of the list then the bottom.

She looked it up and found that it was involved in computer and software development. They had numerous government contracts, most of them in the US but they were also involved with most of the NATO countries. For the US military they had developed a unique super computer to evaluate different defense strategies. For the British they had developed a computer for their unique submarine net around the island nation. It was obvious from what she read they were a leader in computer technology.

How does that tie in with Denzel or the Canadian Security Service? For that matter how does Denzel tie in to any of this? Looking at the sheet of paper she had, the departments and titles all looked pretty normal. She thought for a moment. She needed some inside information, but how would she get it? Then it hit her, Alfred the security guard. He would know what goes on in the place. How would she get him to tell her though? First things first, she would have to touch base with him. She made her way to the pay phone and dialed. It was picked up on the fourth ring and a sleepy voice said,

"Hello"

"Alfred is that you?"

"Yes, who is this?"

"My name is Suzanne. We met yesterday. I was the girl with the moron for a boyfriend."

"Oh yes, how are you?"

"I am fine. I went to AI today, but you were not there. So, I thought I would call and invite you out for lunch, my treat. After all the interview went well and I have you to thank." The phone was silent for a moment, then he said,

"That would be great, were you thinking today?"

"Yes, say about One o'clock. Where do you live?"

"I am in Pickering, how about you?"

"Oh good, you are close," she said avoiding his question. "How about the Lone Star on Highway 2 by Whites Road."

"That would be great. I will see you then."

Darren had gotten up a little after Suzanne had left. He had lain there for a while trying to remember what had happened. He sort of came to the conclusion that she was playing with him. He then called the police station where Betty works. She was expected in at eleven. He decided he would need Suzanne's car if he were going to the police. He paged her and she called him right back.

"Suz, I need your car. I am going to talk to Betty and see if she can do anything."

"You can have it, if I can have your car? I have some very important things to do today."

"Okay, why don't you come up and switch with me."

"Okay" then she hung up. She was at his door 15 minutes later. She did not say a word just gave him her keys and took his. She left quickly, as she wanted to go home and get changed before she met up with Alfred. Darren thought, 'that was very strange. Is she mad at me or what?' Well, he could not think about that now. He made his way down to her car and got in. The drive up to where Betty worked took longer then he had expected. He got there at eleven exactly. Going in he asked at the desk for Betty and was told to have a seat. He waited for about ten minutes before Betty walked out. She smiled and walked over to him.

"Hi Darren. What can I do for you?"

"Well, you could help me find the woman who took a couple of shots at Suzanne and me yesterday."

"What? What are you talking about?" Darren explained all that had happened to Suzanne and him. She asked,

"Do you know who this woman is?"

"No, I have only seen her twice. The first time she was threatening me and the second time you know about."

"This is getting very weird. You know these prints you gave me to run down. Well, I sort of got a match."

"Sort of, I thought finger prints were individual to each person?"

"They are. I did get a match, but the match was with a dead RCMP officer. He was killed in Bolivia on leave from his embassy duties."

"What. How? When?"

"How, was in a car accident. The car went off a cliff. It was so badly wrecked that they could not possibly identify the body. When, was about five years ago."

"So, who is that we are working with?"

"I don't know? He did have an interesting record though. He was highly decorated, but for what I could not find out."

"This guy sounds like some sort of spy from a TV show or a movie."

"Why would a spy be spying on a group of waiters and waitresses?"

"It must have something to do with this whole Dean Wagner business." He paused for a second then continued, "I told you what the blond said when I saw her in his office. She said she could not be touched. I think we should find out who she is and put her away."

Betty looked at him for a minute then said,

"All you know about her is that she drives a dark green Jag, convertible. So let's start there. Come with me." They went to her desk and she started to punch things into her computer. They were at it for about half an hour when they found out that, AI Development had a dark green Jaguar convertible. The only problem was that it had been reported stolen about a month ago. There was no information on it since then. Darren asked,

"Who was the car assigned to and can we get a picture from a drivers license?"

"Maybe, it depends when they last renewed their license."

She then checked the police report on the stolen car.

"The car was assigned to a Jennifer Boucher. Her job title is head of security on special projects." Then she looked up her driver's license. It took a few minutes until Betty had her driving record in front of her. She pulled it up and showed it to Darren. He said,

"That is her. I will never forget those eyes. One minute, so soft, the next hard as stone with no emotion in them." Darren looked at her address and memorized it, while Betty said,

"I am going to have a little talk with Ms. Jennifer Boucher."

"What can I do?"

"Nothing. Just go home and leave this to the police."

"If you think that is best, but I would like to do something."

"No, just go home."

Darren left but he did not go home. Instead he went to work and found Chris and Denise there. He told them about yesterday's excitement. They were shocked and very interested, they asked him a few questions. Most of the questions had to do with the mystery man, Denzel. Denise said,

"We have to find out who this guy is." Then Chris added.

"Why don't we try following him. That might give us some idea as to what he is up to."

"Okay, lets start tonight when he leaves here."

Chris nodded and they talked about how they were going to go about it. Neither of them really had any ideas how to follow someone. They eventually decided to leap frog him. That is one would follow for a while then pass and pull over. The other would take over when the first was out of position. For this to work they needed to communicate. Darren suggested using the walkie-talkies they used at work. Denise got up and went to talk to a manager. She got permission to use them that night. Now all they had to do was to wait.

Betty left very quickly after Darren from the police station. She headed down to AI Development's office to see Ms. Jennifer Boucher. When she got there she was directed to a special elevator that went right to the top floor. The doors opened and she walked out into a large and beautifully decorated lobby. She walked up to a reception desk were a smartly dressed very attractive blond was sitting, she said,

"May I help you?" Betty pulled out her badge and showed it to her.

"I would like to see Ms. Jennifer Boucher."

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No, I don't, but it is in regards to her stolen car."

"Yes, isn't it wonderful. The police just phoned to say they had found it."

"Oh they did. Did they say where they found it?"

"It was found in Halifax this morning."

"Oh that is nice," said Betty, "I must have been misinformed. I do not need to see her then. Thank you."

Betty went right back to the station and pulled up a copy of the Halifax police report. It had been found at 2:15 AM, that morning. How then could it have been used in a shooting the previous afternoon in Toronto? She thought there might just be enough time to drive it there and dump it. She phoned the airport in Halifax. She asked what time the first flight left that morning to Toronto. She was told there was one at 6:15 AM and another at 7:30. Betty then asked for the passenger lists of both flights to be faxed to her. Thanking the person she hung up the phone and waited for the fax, hoping that the name Jeniffer Boucher might be on there.

Suzanne was sitting at the bar at the Lone Star waiting for Alfred. She was not sure how she was going to go about getting information from him. She was a little nervous and decided to have a glass of wine while she waited. Ordering a glass of white Zinfandel she sat there for about ten minutes until Alfred showed up. The two of them got a table and sat down. Suzanne said,

"I am so glad you could come. I really wanted to thank you."

"Oh it was nothing. You said your interview went well."

"Yes, I hope to hear in the next little while." She paused for a second thinking of what to say next, but it just came out. So, what is it that you do there?"

"I mostly monitor the security system and report anything out of the ordinary. Then of course we have to do our rounds in the building. It is cool. I get to see what they are working on and see the projects progress. There is one they are working on. It is for NASA. They are developing a mini super computer for the space shuttle."

"That is fascinating. You must really love your work."

She kept him talking about AI Development for the next two hours. It was pretty interesting but it did not help her in finding out who had shot at her or why. She was getting a little sick of his voice but asked him if he knew a woman with the description of the woman who had shot at them. He smiled and said,

"You just described my boss. Her name is Ms. Jennifer Boucher, but we just call her Queen Bitch."

"Your boss. What is her title?"

"She is the head of security for special projects."

"Is she really hard to work for?"

"Yes, the only good thing is that she is away in South America a lot." Suzanne thought this is really weird. I can not figure out what is going on. She had not been paying attention to Alfred, when all of a sudden she came back to the conversation. He had been talking about the Queen Bitch. She nodded as if she had been paying attention. She felt that she had all the information she could get from him, so she said,

"Alfred I had a wonderful lunch, but I have to go to a meeting now." She quickly paid the bill and walked out leaving him sitting there. He did not even have time to ask her out, and that is the way she wanted it.

Suzanne left the restaurant in Pickering and headed for work. She got there and found Darren, Chris and Denise sitting at a table. They were talking about Denzel and what Betty had found out. Suzanne told what she had found out about the woman who had shot at them. Then both her and Darren said in unison,

"Her name is Jennifer Boucher and she is head of security for special projects at AI Development." Chris and Denise looked at them. Then Chris said,

"This shooting thing has caused you two to become bonded in some way." Suzanne spoke up first,

"No, I had another little conversation with the security guard we met the other day." Darren laughed and explained to the others what they had done to get the information they had needed. He then said,

"Betty and I found out who she was from the car. It was hers from the company, but it was reported stolen a month ago."

They talked a few minutes longer before starting work. Denise was working with Denzel and talked with him most of the night about unimportant stuff. Nearing the end of the night Denise decided to play her hand. Denise began,

"I always wanted to be a cop when I was younger. I even thought about joining the Canadian Security Service." Denzel coolly replied,

"Why would you want to be a police officer, it does not sound like a good job to me."

Denise continued on,

"No not a police man. I want to be a spy. Think of all the neat things you would get to do, like traveling and the adventures you would have."

"I don't really think it's like that at all. It is more dirt and mud. They don't all drive around in fancy sports cars and gamble in Monte Carlo."

"You sound like you know a lot about it."

"No, not really, but I have read a bit about it. I like to read non-fiction and especially anything to do with spies. It is sort of a hobby of mine." With that he quickly moved off to deal with a table that had just been sat.

Denzel thought to himself, 'this is not good. They know who I am. How can that be possible?' I have to report this right away. He asked Denise to watch his section while he went and used the phone. The phone was answered with an abrupt,

"Yes."

"We have to meet. I think my cover has been blown."

"Meet at the reservoir in Unionville on the deck overlooking the lake." Then the phone went dead. Denzel went back to work. This is bad he thought. If these people keep looking into this he would have to kill them, but they are civilians, not players. Well maybe the control could figure out what to do. He finished off his shift all the while thinking of how to get out of this situation. He had never had his cover blown before and to have it done by amateurs was surprising. Maybe it was time to quit and write a book. When he was finished he left quickly and headed to his meeting.

Chris and Denise were ready for him. Denzel headed north on Woodbine Ave. and Denise followed close behind. Chris was well behind. At Highway 7 Chris took over and Denise went straight through at the lights. Chris turned East onto Highway 7 and followed Denzel. Denise made a U-turn, but was caught at the lights. However Denzel and Chris did not get far before they also were stopped at a set of lights. The lights turned green for both groups and Denise caught up. Denise pulled into the left hand turning lane behind Denzel at Main St. Chris turned into a gas station on the Southeast corner. Denzel made the turn with Denise behind him. They headed north while Chris was still at the lights. When the lights changed Chris asked Denise where she was. She told him they were just turning West on to Carlton St. A couple of minutes later Denise gasped over the head set,

"Chris he has pulled into a parking area for a small park. I am going past and will double back."

"Okay, I will pull into the parking lot."

Chris pulled into the parking lot as Denzel was getting out of his car. The parking lot had a couple of other cars in it and Chris put them in between his car and Denzel's. Chris watched as Denzel walked over the dam and towards a building with a large deck over looking the water. As he got to the building Denise pulled up beside Chris's car. He grabbed a small bundle and jumped into her van. It was hard to see, as the lights in the area were sporadic at best. Denzel walked onto the deck and was obviously waiting for someone. Chris pulled out a small pair of field glasses from the pack he had grabbed. Looking through them he could see Denzel quite well. He handed them to Denise and she tried them. She said,

"You just happened to have these in your car?"

"Well, you never know," said Chris.

She laughed and turned her attention back to Denzel. There was someone coming. Denzel looked very mad and was saying something to the newcomer.

"You, ... I thought you were dead," said Denzel. "I saw you get shot and fall off the cliff into the river."

"Yes, that is true, but I did not die."

"Chico, why did you not contact me?"

"I was in a prison hospital with amnesia for five years. Why did you not come looking for me?"

"I did not know you were alive or I would have," Denzel said earnestly.

"Yes, that sounds reasonable," countered Chico with a sarcastic voice.

"Now, what is the situation?"

"You are my controller on this?"

"Yes, why else would I be here."

"Well, my cover is blown in the restaurant. They know the Canadian Security Service is behind this, but they don't know what the project is. They are smart and very resourceful. I am being to wonder if they do not have connections we do not know about."

"You don't know how resourceful. They followed you here."

"That's impossible. I would have seen them."

Chico reached into his coat for another cigarette while Denzel turned to look at the parking lot. After lighting it he told Denzel that his tail was hiding in the mini van on the left. Denzel looked but he could not see anything. Then he heard a faint noise that he knew all to well, it was the sound of the hammer on a gun. It was too late. The last sound Denzel heard was the poof of the silencer as the gun went off.

Denise had been using the glasses at that moment. She had seen the flash of the gun barrel and the explosion of Denzel's face. Right before her eyes it had gone from a thoughtful inquisitive look to a mass of blood, bones and gray ooze.

Denise threw the glasses at Chris and jumped out of the mini van. She made it to the front when she could hold it no longer. Her whole being was repulsed by what she had seen. Her stomach turned and churned and finally lost its ability to keep anything down. She started to throw up and kept throwing up long after her stomach was empty.

Chris took the glasses Denise had thrown at him. He had seen the flash, but could not make out what exactly happened. Looking through the glasses, he saw Denzel on the ground and the China man standing over him with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. The China man was removing a silencer from the gun he held in his hand. He looked towards the van and held the gun as if he was going to shoot at them. Chris put down the glasses and scrambled out to help Denise. He got her back into the van and rolled down the window for her. She was getting a little color back into her face. Chris started up the van and started to drive it off before the China man could get to them. Denise was in tears, but said,

"Chris it was terrible! I watched that man put a gun to his head and pull the trigger."

Chris could not find the words to console her, so he was silent for a few minutes. Then Chris heard the sirens. He thought they should get out of there, because they could not exactly explain what they were doing there. He stepped on the gas but only managed to stall the van; he quickly started it up again and began to move it out. As he was moving towards the exit a police car sped in and almost hit him. He jammed on his breaks just in time. The officers jumped out of their car with their guns drawn and yelled at them to get out of the car. Chris turned the van off and they both got out. The officers searched them both and put them into the back of the police car.

By this time more police cars had arrived with their lights flashing. Chris said,

"How did you know about the shooting, we just saw it?" The officer looked confused and replied,

"We had a phone call about a shoot out going on."

"There was no shoot out," cried Denise. "The China man just shot him in the back of the head. He is over there on the deck. The gun also had a silencer on it. How could anyone have called it in?"

"How did you see so much?"

"I was looking through some field glasses when it happened."

"Really, why?"

"It's a long story, but I guess we will have to tell it to you. We would prefer to tell it only once, so if you have a tape recorder and anyone else who needs to know present we'll begin."

The officer looked at her then said,

"Is there anything else." She smiled and said,

"You will see after I tell you our story that you want to be nice to us. I saw who killed him and we think he may work for the Canadian Security Service."

The police officer said,

"Okay we will do it your way. I will take you back to the station and set things up there."

They were taken to the police station they had been in the day before. They were shown into the same conference room and asked if they would like a coffee while they waited. They both said, no. They were there for about twenty minutes when Betty came in. She looked at them with surprise in her eyes and said,

"You are my witnesses?"

"Yeap," said Denise. "The victim you may have noticed is Denzel, the guy who died years ago according to his fingerprints."

"That was the mystery man?" Betty asked Chris nodded yes.

"Okay, who is this mystery China man?"

At that moment two plain-clothes officers walked in and one asked to speak to Betty outside. The two left the room and the other officer stayed. Chris looked over at Denise and said, "What is going on here?" She shrugged her shoulders and said,"I don't have any idea."

They sat for a couple of minutes then Denise said, to the officer,

"Excuse me, but what is going on? I am tired and would like to go home some time tonight." The officer just looked over at them with a stone face. This did not feel right. Something must have happened that they did not know about. Betty came back in with two more men and said,

"The case is out of my hands. It is being investigated by the Canadian Security Service."

Both Denise and Chris said,

"What?" in unison.

"Denzel was one of them. He was reporting in and was killed. How can you turn it over to them?" shouted Chris. Betty held up a hand to quiet them. Then one of the men with Betty said,

"Quiet! This is not your investigation. You are just the witnesses." Betty looked at him with lightning flashes in her eyes. She said,

"These people are here on there own accord. They are not suspects." The suit man said,

"Yes they are." Then holding up a gun. "This was found in their car underneath the seat." Chris blurted out,

"That's not mine! I don't even own a gun."

"You're right, you don't own a gun. She does. This gun is registered to you," and he looked right at Denise.

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out. Chris looked at her and said,

"What do you have a gun for?"

"I got it years ago after my house was broken into, it was for Jessie's and my protection, but I haven't seen it in years."

The suit man said,

"Now how are we going to prove that." Chris turned on him and said

"Why would we want to kill Denzel?"

"That is what we are going to find out. Now tell us the whole story about how you got involved in this."

Chris started the story off and Denise added details here and there. When they were about halfway through the story the door opened. Denise grabbed Chris's arm. Chris looked up into the eyes of the China man who had shot Denzel. The man who had been questioning them turned to the man and said,

"Oh sir, these are the two I told you about." Before he could say anything Denise blurted out,

"I am not saying anything else until I have a lawyer present."

The man that had been questioning them turned and looked at her. He said,

"What? Why the sudden change? What are you afraid of?"

Betty, who was standing at the back of the room, had noticed the reaction to the new man. They were both afraid. She wondered who this man was.
