Chapter Five

Christine left school and drove to Graham's apartment. Getting there she walked right in as she was in a bit of a fluster.

"Hi, you have to help me."

"What's up?"

"I went to Dean Wagner's office in the hospital. I was lucky there was no one there and I got all sorts of information, but I don't understand it." She then handed the envelope to him. Opening it Graham saw there were three files. He pulled one out and opened it up. Reading through the first couple of pages he saw that it is all about San Medico Institution. Graham was not totally up on modern medical techniques, or even past medical techniques, so he was asking her about it as he read. They discussed the different things they found. Graham was surprised to find that San Medico Institution was more than just a hospital it was involved in all sorts of medical research.

The first project he noticed was to do with the treatment of cancer. The AMA (American Medical Association) sponsored this one; it added a great deal of credibility to the hospital. Another project mentioned, had to do with the effects of prolong weightlessness. This project was in conjunction with both NASA and the Russian Space Agency. There was also another project with the two space agencies. This one was called Project Zombie. There was no information on it except that it had a huge budget.

Graham turned to Christine and said,

"I know this guy was a medical doctor, but what was his specialty?"

"I don't really know, but he had a lot to do with transplanting of organs. I think he started out as a surgeon, why?"

"Well he is involved with San Medico Institution and they are involved with the two major space agencies. It would be interesting to know more about him."

"Get on that computer of yours and find out." Graham moved to the computer and got onto the Web. He pulled up a search program, and put in Dr. Johnathon Wagner. It ran for a few minutes, then it came up with about 700 articles. He then narrowed it down to his credentials and found he had only one article to deal with. The article that came up was about his career and his accomplishments. Graham started to read it with Christine looking over his shoulder. Graham said,

"That is interesting. It says here that he has an extreme interest in UFO's." Then he read on. After a couple of minutes Graham said,

"Here it is not only was he a medical doctor but he also had a doctorates in biology and chemistry. He was a real whiz kid."

Christine had stopped reading the article on the screen. She was now looking at one of the other two file she had taken from the office. She was reading through one, but it did not make sense. For some reason they were researching how to keep a body alive biologically. No that is not quiet right. They wonted to keep all the cells in the body alive but let the controlling electrical impulses die away. The idea was to kill the soul for lack of a better word, but keep the biological organism alive. She was fascinated by what she read but she could not come up with any practical use for such a procedure.

She brought the file over to Graham and said,

"You should have a look at this. They are doing some pretty weird research." He took it and started to read it. Then closed it up and said,

"I need a medical dictionary to get through this. What does it all mean." She explained, as best as she could what they were doing. Graham said,

"That is incredible."

"What? I don't see any practical use for all of this."

"I read about something like this a couple of years ago. It was in a science fiction magazine that had a lot of stories on futuristic space travel. You know that the distance between solar systems is the biggest problem in space travel. What if you could put the body into a suspended animation so it would not age." She looked at him and nodded her understanding. "One of the major problems is that the inactivity would drive the mind crazy. Now what if you could put the electrical energy or soul as you said, into a computer. You could still have the human factor involved in ships operations but you would have no need for life support or even food for that matter. Then when they got where they were going you put the energy back into the bodies." She looked at him like he was crazy. He then said,

"Do you have any better ideas as to what this research is for?" She just sat down as the enormity of the whole thing hit her. Graham went to the kitchen and got her a glass of wine. He brought it to her and told her to have a big drink. She did as she was told and the color came back into her cheeks. She looked at Graham and said,

"What are we going to do?"

"Just keep looking for the truth, because what I just told you is only science fiction. Don't worry to much about it." Graham could see this put her a little more at ease.

He then said,

"You graduate in a couple of months don't you?"

"Yes why?"

"Well someone has to go to San Medico Institution and see what is going on. You are the only one who could pull it off."

"No way! I am not going any where near that place."

"Well we can talk about that, but think about the valuable knowledge and experience you would get. It is one of the worlds foremost research hospitals."

"No way the place gives me the creeps."

"OK, you don't have to go now just think about it." Then he poured her another glass of wine.

Denise had gone home and got Jessie. The two of them met with Chris for a late lunch. While Jessie played in the restaurant Denise told Chris about her interesting afternoon. Chris voiced both of their concerns about Denzel.

"Maybe Denzel is not what he says he is, but how can we find out for sure?"

"I was thinking about that and came up with two ideas. The first is we can check his locker at work. The second is, remember that Dave said the police thought our investigation was indirectly responsible for Dean Wagner's death. They wanted to know who knew about it. How about we get Denzel's finger prints at work and give them to Betty, Dave's friend." Chris thought for a second then said,

"That should not be to hard to do. I will deal with the locker if you work on the finger prints."

Chris knew that Denzel had a combination lock on his locker, but how to get it open. He thought about all the stories he had read or moves he had seen where a thief had to open a lock. The idea came to him, get a stethoscope and try to figure out what the combination is. They left the restaurant, as it was time to get ready for work. Chris stopped at a medical supply store on his way to work, and picked up the stethoscope. Getting to work he put the stethoscope in the change room.

Denise was also at work now and found out that she was working with Dave. Denzel was also working with them. She explained to Dave about her day and about her idea for Denzel. She said,

"We need to get his finger prints and then get Betty to run them through her computer to see if he is who he says he is." Dave said,

"That should not be to hard, I will help you. Tonight would be good because I am going to see Betty after work tonight." Denise said,

"Oh really, that is pretty convenient. I thought she was just a source of information." Dave was obviously embarrassed, and said,

"No, we are getting along very well thank-you." Denise laughed.

Then the restaurant started to get busy. Dave found a wineglass with a chip in it and cleaned it up by hand. His plan was to give it to Denzel and then notice a chip. He would give him another. The night went along and finally Denzel ordered a half-liter of wine. Dave put out the chipped glass and Denzel loaded it up on his tray. Dave said,

"Oh that glass has a chip." He grabbed it by the stem and gave him another one. Denzel did not seem to notice the strange behavior. He just took out his drinks and Dave gave Denise a little wink. He wrapped the glass up and put it in his coat pocket. Thinking that was easy, but then who would think we would try such a thing. The rest of the shift went on as normal and Denzel asked,

"Is anyone going out for drinks after work?" Dave said,

"Yes he had a date." The rest of the group just seems to hum and haw as usual. Denise and Chris had already decided they were going out, but they were not sure if they wanted Denzel along.

Chris on the other hand was having trouble getting to the change room to check out Denzel's locker. He had tried a couple of times, but each time it had gotten busy. Then he decided he would pretend to be sick, that would give him the time he would need. He called a manager over and told him he was not feeling well and could they watch the bar for a couple of minutes. Chris then made his way to the change room. Once there he took the Stethoscope out and attempted to open Denzel's locker. It took him four tries but he got it open. As he got it open someone came in, Chris froze. If it were the wrong person, he would be caught red handed. It was Darren; Chris breathed a big sigh of relief. Chris quickly explained and Darren helped him. Chris had Denzel's wallet but everything looked normal. He did find two phone numbers though. Copping them down he asked Darren.

"Did you find anything?" Darren was still looking but the only interesting things he had found, was Denzel's keys. Denzel it seemed drove a BMW. Darren thought to himself, 'must be nice to have that kind of money.' Looking at Chris he said,

"No nothing." They closed up the locker and both headed back to work.

Darren could not get the keys out of his mind. How does a guy just off the boat who has no job get to drive around in a BMW? Then thinking about what he had heard about Denise that afternoon, he had to talk to her. He went back to her station and told her of the search. He asked,

"What kind of car was following you today?"

"I am not really good with cars but I think it was a BMW, why?"

"Well guess who has a set of keys for a BMW in his locker."

"Well then I guess it is good that our plan also worked." She then explained about how they had got the fingerprints and what they were going to do with them. Darren laughed and headed back up to the front and told Chris of the goings on at the back of the restaurant. They both had a good laugh.

The rest of the night was uneventful. They all found out about Dave meeting up with Betty, so they moved there meeting to Jakes. After they had finished at work each made his or her way there. They all were looking for Denzel's BMW but no one could be sure if they saw it or not. Unionville was a very well off community and there were lots of BMW's around. When everyone was there they took over a small room and started to tell each other of their adventures. Betty had not arrived and they started to wonder what they should tell her. The whole group got so involved in what they were saying that they did not even notice when she came into the room. When they did stop, she had heard just about everything. She cleared her throat to get their attention and said,

"Well you all have been very busy, breaking and entering, interfering with a police investigation, etc. etc. etc." The whole group, look very embarrassed. Dave said,

"OK so we have not been pillars of the community. Now that you know all that we know and also how fantastic it all sounds. What are you going to do about it?"

"Nothing, no one would believe me if I told them. There is no proof, but maybe after I run those finger prints we will have something."

Dave smiled she was on there side, but he also realized she would only go so far. There was not much more to say. The group had some more drinks. Dave and Betty quietly moved off to the poolroom and started their rematch. In the poolroom the two were flirting as if nothing had happened down stairs. Dave said,

"You are pretty good at separating business and pleasure, well at least I hope this is pleasure."

"Of course it is pleasure I just beat you didn't I." The pool games were tied up at one each. Betty said,

"Lets make the tie breaker interesting. If I win you cook me dinner tonight. If and I mean if you win I will cook you dinner." Dave looked at her and there was a mischievous look on her face. He said,

"But tonight is almost over."

"Well then you had better hurry up and break, or we will have to make it breakfast." Dave slowly walked up to the table and looked over the shot for a few seconds. Betty laughed and said,

"OK, get on with it." The game was very intense but finally Betty won. She said,

"Dinner my place or yours?"

"Yours I have no food at mine."

"OK, but you cook."

"But you clean up." She smiled and said,

"Deal," then kissed him. This time Dave was ready and the kiss was an outpouring of their desires for each other. They went down the stairs and tried to quietly get their coats, but were caught in the act.

Christine said,

"Leaving so soon." Dave answered,

"Yah, were going for something to eat." Darren said,

"You're leaving a restaurant to go and have something to eat, is it something they don't have on the menu." The whole group laughed. Dave tried to explain about the bet, but the laughter just drown out what he was saying. They decided in the end to just grab their coats and leave. Outside they decided to take Betty's car, as she had to drive right past here to go to work in the morning.

The rest of the group was not as luck as Dave. They sat and talked about what they were going to do next. The investigation was going slow and they only had a few leads. One of the most promising leads was the two phone numbers found on Denzel. Graham asked to see them. He looked at the first one but did not recognize it. The second one though looked very familiar. He pulled the number out of his pocket that he had got from the flag program at the university. They were the same numbers except Denzel's did not have an area code. Graham said,

"I know this number. It is the Canadian Security Service. That is the same number that the flag program had notified when we looked up Dean Wagner's file. I have already started to look into that, who wants to look into the other one." Darren and Suzanne said they would try to find out about it. The rest of the night was quiet for everyone except Dave.

The next day Darren and Suzanne met for lunch. They were not really sure how to find out what and who was at the other end of the number. Then Darren thought the Ontario phone book is on the computer at school. After they had finished lunch they went to the university and found a terminal someone had left on. They did not wont any trails leading back to them again. Pulling up the phone book Darren had to play with it for a few minutes until he got it to search for a number instead of a name. The system was not quiet set up for this. When he was ready he activated the program and it told him it would take about two hours to find a match.

"What should we do for the next two hours?" said Suzanne with a wicked little smile crossing her face.

"No be serious," said Darren, and he decided to use the time to do some research for a project he had coming up. Suzanne went with him and kept saying is this the best way you can think of killing a couple of hours? Darren just ignored her until the two hours were up. Then they went back to the computer lab.

It took Suzanne only a spilt second to pull the program back up. She found that the computer had found the number, but there was no name to go with it. They did have an address though, so they quickly pulled out a road map for Toronto. They found that the address was down town just off of Front Street and just east of Younge Street. They quickly made their way to Suzanne's car and headed for the address. Finding the building was not hard, but there were no signs to say who they where or what they did. It was a large office complex and they decided to go in and see what they could find out. Walking in they found themselves in a very sterile lobby with a reception desk that had a security guard behind it. Darren pulled Suzanne to the side and said,

"Do you have any ideas as to how we are going to find out what goes on in this place."

"Yah, just follow my lead." They walked up to the security desk and Suzanne gave the guard her best smile. She then said,

"Oh I hope you can help me. My idiot boyfriend lost my daytimer with all my information in it. I was supposed to have an interview with someone here tomorrow regarding a job. I can't remember his name or his title. If you could be so kind and give me a copy of your departments and who is in charge of each one, then I could figure it out." She then gave him another killer smile.

"I don't know that could mean my job." She quietly said with a nodded at Darren,

"I would be very grateful and after what he did today I don't think my so called boyfriend will be around much longer. Who knows I may even be working here and we would see each other everyday and maybe even a night or two." The guard winked at her and said,

"I shouldn't but what the heck. Give me a second to photocopy it." He then got up and went through a door behind his desk. While he was gone she looked through some papers on his desk. The place obviously had something to do with computers.

The guard came back out with a folded piece of paper that he handed to Suzanne. She opened it and found it was a list of departments with names and titles beside it. It also was on company stationary so they got the name of the company also. It was called AI Development. Suzanne noticed there was a name and phone number on the top of the sheet. This was written in pen and was obviously the guards. Suzanne said,

"Thanks Alfred, you are a life saver." She then turned on Darren and said,

"See what a little intelligence does. That man just might have saved my professional career. Why can't you think before you do things." Then they walked out with her cutting him down all the way outside. Once outside they looked at each other and started to laugh. After a second they started to the car and got in. Darren said,

"You were pretty hard on me in there." Suzanne smiled at him and said,

"That was just play acting. I still love you." Darren turned away as if he was pouting.

Darren noticed a dark color Jag across the street. He at once thought of the classy blond from the university the other day. His mind wondered a bit thinking about her; she was not your average woman. She had a presence that had intrigued him, but maybe that was the gun. He hoped he was wrong and she was not the one from Wagner's office. The driver window rolled down just then, but he could not see into the car. He thought he saw the long blond hair again but that might have just been his imagination working over time. Keeping watch he saw what looked like a camera lens coming through the window. He thought, 'that is weird why would anyone take pictures like that.'

They drove off and made their way to the Don Valley north. Suzanne was a fast driver and they were zipping along at about 110 km/h. Suzanne said,

"Can you grab me a smoke, my purse is in the back seat." Darren turned around to grab Suzanne's purse for her. He noticed what he thought was the same dark green Jag. This time it was one lane over and about two cars behind them. He watched it as it pulled up beside them. The window rolled down and what looked like a gun barrel slid out. Darren saw it was the blond from the university holding the gun. She took aim at the front of the car, but before she fired she looked up and straight into Darren's eyes. When their eyes met she gave him a wicked little smile and a wink. Darren grabbed the wheel and swerved them onto the Eglington exit ramp, which lucky was there. As he did he heard two sounds like stones hitting the back end of the car.

Suzanne yield,

"What the hell are you doing, trying to kill us?" Darren looked around but could not see the Jag anywhere. It must have kept going north, or so he thought. Suzanne was still yelling at him.

"Find a bar I need a drink and I will explain," said Darren. They headed for a little pub just up the road. When Suzanne had parked in front of the pub Darren jumped out. He then ran around the car. Looking at the rear of the car he found what he was looking for. Just above the license plate there were two small holes. He could tell they were new there was no rust on them. Darren grabbed Suzanne by the arm and said,

"Look, that is why I did what I did. They were shooting at us." She looked at the holes and even stuck her finger in one. Then she turned to Darren to say something but fainted into his arms. She woke up a few seconds latter but was still a little whoosy. He walked her into the bar and got them both a shot of brandy. She took the brandy and drank it down in one gulp. Looking at him she asked what happened? Darren explained about the Jag and the woman who drives it. He said he was not sure but he thought she was the one in Dean Wagner's office. Suzanne said,

"Things are getting out of hand we can not deal with this. People are shooting at us. How are we going to get out of this alive?" She sounded like she was getting a little hysterical so Darren handed her another brandy.

The two of them just sat there having drink after drink. It did not take long before they were both quite drunk. While they were drinking and talking, both were thinking about how close they had come to death that day. The more they thought about it the more they drank. Finally Suzanne said,

"We have to get home?"

"Yes you should come back to my place. You can not drive to Oshawa tonight." They asked the waitress to call them a cab. Then they paid the bill and walked outside. It was cold outside and Darren put his arm around Suzanne for warmth. At that moment he wished he were at home with her on the couch, he kissed her just the same. The cab pulled up and they got in. The drive to his place was quick and quiet but there was some sort of energy flowing between them. They got to his place and made for the elevator. She grabbed his hand in the elevator and held it tight. Once in the apartment they went straight to the bedroom. They helped each other get undressed. Suzanne said she had to go to the bathroom. Putting on Darren's robe she made her way there, only bouncing off the wall once. Finding a bottle of mouthwash she rinsed away the taste of beer and cigarettes from the bar. She then splashed some water on her face and headed back to the bedroom. Walking in the first thing she heard was a load snoring noise. Looking at the bed she saw Darren sprawled out with his mouth wide open and snoring away. She laughed rolling him over and covering him with a blanket. She then crawled into bed beside him, and she quickly fell asleep.

The next morning Suzanne woke up early, not feeling her best. A naughty little smile comes to her face as she sees Darren is still sleep. She curls up beside him and lightly kisses him on the cheek. He woke up and looked at her. She smiled and said,

"Thanks for last night you were great." Then she grabbed up her clothes and walks out. Darren just lied there trying to remember what had happened. Was she kidding or had they really had a great time.
