Darren had been at Angie's for almost a week. The only time he had left was to go to work or their nightly visits to the pub. He had not seen Jeniffer yet. He figured she must be out of town. Angie had been explaining to Darren what Jeniffer was all about. She was an orphan who had grown up very poor. Money has become everything to her it is the main motivation in her life now. Angie also told him that was why she left the Canadian Security Service. She still felt a great deal loyalty to them or at least the people she worked with. Angie was not 100 percent positive but she figured Jeniffer would drop what ever she was doing to find Denzel's killer. Darren made the point that the only one who knows who that is Chris and Denise, but he could call Betty and see if she knows anything. Over the week Darren had called Betty or Dave to get an up date on the situation. One time when he called Betty, she told him about Chico and what Chris and Denise had said, about him being the one who killed Denzel. This sounds like it is out of a cheap detective novel. The cop in charge of the investigation is really the killer. Angie told Darren that if Chico is involved then what ever is going on is big. For him to go to the trouble of killing two of his own it must be very important. The last I heard of him he was working on something very hush hush. It was said that it had to do with the future of mankind itself. That was a few years back though.
Darren called Betty latter in the week and find out that Chris and Denise were missing. No one knew where they were or who had taken them. Who ever it was had all the proper paper work and ID though. Angie told him that it must be Chico he could get them out of there in a second. Later that day Jeniffer showed up. A taxi pulled up in front of her house she got out and the driver went to the trunk and pulled out some suitcases. Darren thought, she had obviously been away. Darren wanted to go over there right then but Angie talked him into setting up a meeting. After all she did try to kill him once it would be dumb to meet with her alone in her house. Darren nodded his agreement and Angie went to set it up. She came back and told him the meeting would be that night at the pub. Darren was not sure if he really wanted to meet with Jeniffer, but she was his only lead to find out where Chris and Denise where and get them back. He spent the day trying not to be nervous but it did not work. By the time they left the diner he was not sure weather he could go through with it. The plan was to trade the information on whom shot Denzel for the location of his two friends. They walked in and sat down. Looking around Darren could not see Jeniffer. They ordered their drinks, but did not get even a sip before Jeniffer walked in.
Jeniffer walked with a smile on her face until she saw Darren. Then there was lighting in her eyes. The bartender came over with their drinks and turned to see who Angie was looking at. He said,
"Now you two promised me that you would never fight in here again. It took me a week to clean up the last time." Angie smiled and said,
"We are not going to fight, it is just a little friendly meeting." The bartender then walked back behind the bar. At the same time Jeniffer walked over to the table and sat down.
"What is he doing here?"
"He has some information to trade with you," said Angie.
"What information could he have that I could possibly be interested in?"
"Well did you know that Denzel is dead, he was murdered." Jeniffer deflated and light in her eyes changed, it got duller somewhat. She gulped back her drink and ordered another. No one said anything they just drank their drinks, Jeniffer was obviously thinking about Denzel, and neither Darren nor Angie wanted to intrude on her thoughts. After a couple of minutes Jeniffer came back from reminiscing and said,
"Who killed him and what information do you what in exchange?" Darren sat up and said,
"I need to know where my friends are and your help to get them back. If you help me with that I will tell you who killed Denzel."
"What if something happens to you?"
"In that case I will leave the information for you. Is that fair?" She looked at Angie and they both smiled. She said,
"I will help you then you can tell me who killed Denzel. Now tell me what has happened to your friends as I have been out of town and have not been briefed yet on what happened while I was away."
Darren explained the whole situation to Jeniffer and she was surprised at how much the group knew. They knew about SMI and AI development, also that the Canadian Security Service was involved. She looked at Angie and said,
"Did you help him with any of this?"
"No, maybe you should look into your security, but I don't really think that would help. Your problem was that you over reacted with Dean Wagner. If you had just secreted him away all this would have just blown over."
"That was CSS, and I don't think it was authorized." Darren was confused, These two beautiful women were sitting here talking about a murder as if it was a bad business decision. Jeniffer then said,
"I do not know where your friends are but I will make a few phone calls and see what I can find out." She got up and went to the bar and talked to the bartender. Angie turned to Darren and said,
"She was once my best friend. She even talked me into joining the CSS. We both quit at the same time but for very different reasons." Angie then looked at Jeniffer and sadness crossed her face.
"We are on very rocky ground right now. Jeniffer needs to avenge her friend but she does also not want to put her career in jeopardy. I hope she will pick the right direction or we are in big trouble." Angie got very thoughtful then said,
"She is my friend but I don't know how to help her, or if I can even trust her."
Christine in the mean time had been cramming so she could be able to live up to the resume that Graham had given her. She had not known how much she did not know about transplants until she started to research it. She had been at it for a couple of days when SMI sent her a letter telling her she had been hired. The package included a ticket to go down there and all the information she would need once she was there to get to the hospital. They also said they expected her in the next couple of days. That night she told the rest of the group and gave her notice at work. The restaurant did not want her to go, so instead they gave her a leave of absence. Until she was sure that the job was what she wanted. The next couple of days were busy getting everything in order. Then she was on her way to La Paz. The trip was very nice as they flew her down first class. She finally landed and walked into the terminal, it was small by Toronto standards, but well set out. As she walked towards the baggage claim counter a woman came running up to her.
"Oh Christine I am so sorry I am late," said the woman in her mid to late twenties. She was pretty with short dirty blond hair. To Christine she seemed to have an excess of energy.
"That's all right, but who are you?"
"I am Christina, Dr. Christina Molloy. I am the administrator in charge of personal at SMI. I like to meet new staff at the airport so they get off to a good start." Christine thought this woman is far too young and chummy to have such a position. Maybe she is just faking the friendly domineer or maybe she does not know what is going on. They collected Christine luggage and made for the parking area. Christina or Tina as she asked to be called walked straight to a new top of the line Mercedes. They through the luggage into the trunk and got in. Christine had not noticed the heat until she got into the cool car. They left the airport and started to head out of town. On the way they talked and Christine asked,
"When will I be starting my duties?"
"That will be tomorrow, today we will get you settled in and give you a tour of the facilities."
"Good I want to get to work as quickly as possible." Christine finished the sentence in her mind saying, 'so I can get out of here.' The rest of the drive was all small talk. They drove for about an hour when the car pulled up to a gate.
There outside the gate were a young woman and man. They were holding up signs, Christine could not understand them as they were in Spanish, so she asked,
"What is all that about?"
"That is Melanie and Peter, They are from the University in La Paz."
"What are they protesting?"
"They believe something illegal is being done in the way of research here. They do not have any specific complaints. They picked up some unusual energy readings and some radio waves transmissions. Their allegations were investigated, but dismissed as nothing." Christine thought she should talk to these people. Tina then spoke into an intercom then looked up at a camera. A moment later the gate opened, she pointed to a guardhouse and said,
"Don't worry you are perfectly safe here." Christine looked over, she saw two men with very large guns and she said,
"Security is pretty tight for a hospital out in the middle of nowhere."
"Well it is because we are out in the middle of nowhere that security is so tight. If we did have any sort of trouble it would take the authorities 20 minutes by helicopter to get here."
They drove up the drive way through a beautiful lawn and garden. Then rounding a corner and came up in front of a beautiful three-story building. It was all white with large windows everywhere. The main doors where on the ground level and made of a dark red wood. There was a brass plaque next to the door that said, San Medico Institution. Tina said,
"Lets take you in and get you registered and then we can take you to your apartment." They got out of the car and walked in. Christine had not expected what she saw. There was a large lobby with a big wide staircase on either side. The windows let in enough light that the mini jungle in-between the stairs had no problem growing. There were doors off to the right and left with a reception desk in the middle right in front of the jungle. Tina waved to the receptionist as they walked off to the right. Going into the office Tina said,
"This is the administration office, if you need anything come here. Now lets get you processed." For the next hour Christine filled out forms and had her picture taken. At the end of all this Tina handed her a security card with her picture on it.
"This card will give you access to only the blue areas of the facility. You understand that because of all the research going on we can not have people running all over the place."
"Oh yes, I completely understand."
Now lets take you to your apartment. They got back into the car and Tina drove around the side of the building. Christine was surprised, the hospital was bigger than she had thought it would be. That was only the first surprise, in behind the hospital there were about seven buildings that looked like fully equipped labs. Christine asked,
"Are those the research labs?"
"Some of them yes, but there are more that you can't see from here."
"How many are there?"
"Twelve not counting the small labs in the hospital." Christine thought this is a research facility not a hospital, how am I ever going to get to know all of this.
They then drove on for a couple of more minutes and came to a small apartment building. Tina stopped the car out in front and they got out. The two of them quickly got the luggage up to a third floor apartment that opened to Christine's security card. Tina said,
"I will be back in about two hours. That should give you a little time to settle in and rest. Then I will give you a tour of the hospital." Christine thanked her as she left. Christine quickly unpacked and then laid down for a nap. The lights flashing awakened her, and the doorbell was ringing. She got up and went to the door to find Tina standing there,
"I hope I didn't wake you, but it is time for your tour."
"Just let me splash some water on my face and I will be right with you." Christine did just that and they made there way back to the hospital. Tina showed her the operating room and it was state of the art. They then moved on to the recovery room and the ICU. Coming out of the ICU Christine was not paying attention to where she was going and walked right into a young man. When they had both recovered, Tina said,
"That is one way to make a lasting impression. Christine this is Dr. Jasson Moody." He smiled it was a smile that at once made you feel good. He was tall and good-looking in a naturalist sort of way. He had long curly brown hair to match his soft doe like brown eyes. She at once thought she would like to get to know him better. He said in a soft voice that showed knowledge and compassion,
"I am sorry, I was not looking where I was going."
"Oh no, it was my fault." Then Tina said,
"Jasson, this is Christine, she is your new floor nurse." He put out this hand to shake and said,
"It is a pleasure to bump into you and I hope you will enjoy it here." She took his hand it was soft yet had a feel of strength, she said,
"I am sure I will be quite happy working with you." The handshake lasted a couple seconds longer then normal and they made serious eye contact. He then moved off to resume his duties. Christine watched him walk away. Tina said,
"It looks like you will get along just fine here." Christine smiled and got a bit of red in her cheeks, they continued on the tour. It lasted a couple of hours, over that time, Christine saw Dr. Moody a couple more times. She was careful not to bump into him again. After the tour she started walking back to her apartment.
About half way back, she heard someone calling her name. She turned to see Dr. Moody running to catch up with her. She stopped and waited. He caught up and she waited while he caught his breath. He then said,
"I am glad I caught you."
"Why is that?" said Christine.
"Well it would be very difficult to find your apartment, so how could I have asked you to dinner tonight."
"Is that what you are doing?"
"Yes, I know this great little restaurant in La Paz. They make the most excellent Chicago style pizza, and have cold American beer."
"It has been a long day but if you can promise to have me back in three hours I will go with you."
"Three, how about three and a half?" Christine smiled then said,
"OK, but we have to leave right now." They had been walking while they were talking and by the time she had said yes they were at her building. He went and got his car while Christine ran up stairs and got changed. She came down in a nice pair of jeans and a silk top. Getting into the car they drove to La Paz, it took about forty-five minutes. During the drive they talked about the hospital, but Christine did not learn anything useful.
At the restaurant the conversation slowly changed and got more personal. There was even a small amount of flirting going on between them. It did not go very far. They had a good time and headed back right on time. The drive back was full of quite chitchat. Then Christine asked,
"What is with the protesters I saw today?"
"They think something weird is going on, they could be right this place does have some very unusual research going on."
"What sort of things are they doing?"
"In truth I do not understand it all, but the most unusual is Project Zombie. It has to do with the isolation of the human electrical patterns from the body then putting them back. A new super computer just came in from Canada this week to help with the project. That is about all I know about it. They asked for our input on transplant technologies about two years ago, for who knows what."
"It sounds very interesting. It must keep you challenged."
"Yes, this place keeps you on your toes professionally, but it is very boring socially. That is until tonight."
At that point they pulled up to the door of Christine's apartment. She said,
"I would love to invite you in but I am just wiped from all the traveling."
"I understand. I will see you tomorrow." She got out of the car and went up to her apartment. She slept well that night and had very pleasant dreams. The next morning she got up and made her way to the hospital. She found her duty desk and introduced herself to the woman who was there. The woman said,
"My name is nurse Wallace. I will show you what your duties are and where everything is. If you have any questions please think before you ask them." Christine thought, 'here is the order keeper. That is why Tina can act like a tour guide.' They spent the morning going through the procedures on the desk. Everything had to be documented. This part of the job was easy thought Christine. That afternoon they went on rounds and checked out all their patients. Most of this appeared to be quiet normal until they went down a little wing at the back. These rooms, nurse Wallace told her, were for the lab's patients.
"You are not to go in there or do anything with them unless a doctor is with you or they tell you to do something." She looked through the windows in the doors and could see that most of the people appeared to be under heavy sedation. Then she looked into another room. The shock hit her like a slap in the face. There on the bed was Chris. She looked at the other bed but could not be sure but she thought it was Denise. She could not move for a few minutes, but came out of it when Nurse Wallace said,
"We should move on." Christine pulled herself together and they got on with the duties. It lasted only another 15 minutes then nurse Wallace told Christine she was finished for the day and to come back tomorrow.
Christine left and headed back to her apartment. As soon as she walked in she picked up the phone. An operator answered and she thought, 'I can not call Graham on this phone they are probably listening in.'
"Get me Dr. Jason Moody's apartment please." The phone was ringing a couple of seconds latter. Jason said,
"Hello."
"Hi, it is Christine, I was just wondering if you were going into town tonight. I need to do some shopping."
"Well I wasn't but I guess I could, if you buy me dinner."
"You got it. How about ten minutes down stairs."
"Make it 15 minutes, I have a few things to do."
"Great, see you then."
The drive to La Paz was a quite one as Christine had other thing on her mind. Jason tried to talk to her but he could tell her mind was someplace else so he just let it go. She had noticed that there was a car behind them all the way from SMI, but as they got closer to the city she lost sight of it, in La Paz, she said,
"I will met you at restaurant in one hour." Jason smiled and nodded yes. She then walked off. She quickly found a payphone and placed her call on her credit card. The phone rang once, twice, three times and then was picked up by an answering machine. She thought, 'Graham where are you?' Christine quickly explained what she had found out. She told him she needed help, also that she would keep looking around until help arrived. Then she made a decision. She said,
"If I do not hear from anyone in four days. I will try to get them out on my own. Please help me."
She then met Jason for dinner. She felt a little better now, but she was still a little shaken. She told Jason that a family friend had died and that was why she was a little distracted. She also said,
"I am deeply grateful for your company. I hate to impose on you like this."
"Impose, not at all, remember I told you this place is boring, well you have given it a little life." The dinner was very intimate and so was the conversation and it made Christine think, 'I wonder if I can trust this man with what I know.' They started to drink, Christine could drink and soon had Jason a little drunk. She asked him some leading questions about SMI but it seemed he did not know anything about what was going on. She felt better about him and they continued drinking until they got kicked out of the bar. Christine thought, 'thank god they closed early she had to work in the morning.' They started to drive back to SMI. They were about halfway back when all of a sudden there was a loud bang and the car started to spin out of control. It slid off the road and slammed into a tree with a loud crash. They were both thrown around in the car and they ended on top of one another with all there legs and arms intertwined. They looked into each other's eyes. The kiss that followed was full of passion and excitement. They continued for at least an hour. Until a set of lights flashed across the car. They straightened them selves up and got out to find a police car there. Jason explained to the police what had happened. One of the officers looked at the car while the other took Jason's report. The one looking over the car called to the other one to come and look. The officer with Jason and Christine moved to the car and looked at the tire. It was completely gone. The officer told them that he did not have a blow out, but someone had shot his tire out.
There was not much else they could do in the dark so the police said they would drive them back to the hospital. They got back to SMI and Jason walked Christine to her apartment. She said,
"Would you please come up I am not use to being shot at and it would be nice if there was someone with me tonight." Jason nodded and they walked up to her apartment, he opened the door, and they walked in. Christine opened a bottle of wine and poured them both a glass. They sat on the couch and she curled up in his arms. She felt safe there and looked up into his eyes he leaned down and kissed her. The rest of the night was a passionate expression of their joy at being alive. It lasted into the wee hours of the morning, when they finally fell asleep in each other's arms.
Graham got home from work and checked his messages. Christine's was there and before he heard it all he knew she was in trouble by the sound of her voice. When he had heard the whole message he was shocked. He saved it and called Suzanne. He asked,
"How can we get in touch with Darren. It is important I have a message from Christine. She has found Chris and Denise."
"What? How? I will be right over and then we can go and see Darren I know where he is." She then hung up and Graham called Dave. Graham got lucky and found Dave at home, and Betty was with him. He told them that Suzanne was coming over and then they were going to see Darren. Dave said they would come over to. Graham waited and they all showed up at about the same time. He played the message from Christine for them then he recorded it so Darren could hear it. Then getting into Betty's car they went down to the diner. Getting there they found no one was there. Suzanne said,
"We should go to the pub, I think they will be there." The group made there way to the pub and walked in. It was quiet and they found Darren and Angie playing darts. The group all sat down and Graham played the tape for them. Darren said,
"Thank god, now we do not have to wait for Jeniffer. I didn't trust her." Angie looked at him and said,
"We still need her help. She probably set up security for the place. Even if she didn't she will know all about it."
"OK," said Darren, "Why don't you call her and see if she will come over."
Angie went to the phone while Darren explained the deal they had made with Jeniffer. Suzanne said,
"Do you trust her?"
"Yes and no, as long as she wants to know who killed Denzel I think she will work with us." Jennifer walked in a few minutes dressed as though she was going to a meeting of the board of directors. Everything about her said, she had both money and class. She walked up to the table and sat down beside Suzanne. She turned to Suzanne and said,
"Did you find someone to fill the bullet holes. If not I know someone very good who owes me a favor." Suzanne said with sarcasm dripping from her voice,
"That would be very decent of you, especially since you put them there trying to kill us."
Darren turned to Graham and nodded to play the tape. He played it and Jeniffer said,
"You have someone inside SMI. You had better get them out of there, they are in grave danger." Then after a second she went on. "How did you ever get someone in there?" Graham said,
"It was time consuming but quiet simple in the long run."
"Well I can see I have to upgrade the security system. You people have found out way too much about what is going on. You almost know as much as I do."
"You mean you are not fully in the loop," said Angie.
"No," said Jeniffer, "Something really big is going on down there, but that is all I know." The discussion then changed to what they could do to help Chris and Denise. They came up with a couple of plans over the next four hours. They weighed the pros and cons of each one and finally decided on one. Darren, Suzanne, Graham, Angie and Jeniffer would go down to Bolivia. While Dave and Betty would stay here and work on a plan to get them out if it was needed.
The next day was spent getting everything they might need. Angie got them a plane that would get them there. Her and Jeniffer collected the equipment that they may need to break into a high security place like SMI. Jeniffer also went into the office to see what see could find out about the security at SMI. After a day to get all these things together they loaded up the plane and took off. In the plane Graham was looking through some of the bags. The first one was full of assorts of electrical equipment. The next bag was full of weapons, Graham closed this bag up quickly, and he did not like the idea of all those guns. The plane trip would take about 15 hours with one stop for refueling. About five hours into the trip Angie called Graham up into the cockpit. She said,
"Graham can you sit here while I get some sleep?"
"What I can't fly a plane."
"Don't worry it is on auto pilot, all you have to do is sit there and don't touch anything."
"Well OK, but sleep lightly." Graham sat there with sweaty palms all the time Angie was asleep. Suzanne came up to the cockpit to keep him company. She said,
"Hello captain, I didn't know you could fly a plane?"
"I can't doesn't that worry you?"
"Well since we have not crashed, I figure you are doing a good job. I also figured that you might be a little nervous and needed someone to talk to." The two of them talked until Angie came back. She looked at the instruments quickly and decided they were right on course.
"You did a good job. Now do you want to really learn to fly."
"Yah, I mean it would probably be good to know."
She then explained to him what everything does and how to use it. Graham was a quick study and he was flying in about half an hour. They had a course adjustment coming up and she told Graham what to do. He took it one step at a time. He did quite well until it came to leveling back out. He could not quite get it, so Angie took over and fixed it. Graham flew the rest of the way to Mexico City where they were going to refuel. She took the controls and landed the plane telling Graham everything she was doing.
They fueled up and continued on to La Paz, everything went well until Graham tried to land the plane. He almost crashed bring the plane down to quickly. Angie fixed it and talked him through it. His first landing was as smooth as silk after that. When they got out of the airport Jeniffer took them to a house she said would be safe. The group was exhausted but the first thing they did was to report in with Dave.
Dave and Betty had been busy during the last couple of days. Betty had made some inquires with some friends on the RCMP. It seemed that the CSS and the RCMP did not have a good working relationship. Betty had gotten together with a friend from university who had joined the RCMP. They had met for lunch, her friends name was Constable Wendy Long. Wendy was not very tall, but was in great physical shape. She had long blond hair down to her waist and a bubbly personality. Wendy told Betty in a very serious tone that the CSS was not above breaking the law, but she had never known them to kill anyone. Betty then told her that some guy named Chico was involved. Wendy got even more serious and said,
"Are you sure it was Chico? Do you know where he is now?"
"No, but he is the one who kidnaped Chris and Denise out of my custody."
"He is wanted by us in regards to a military transport that went down in Labrador. He is a very bad man Betty, be very careful."
"If I see him again I will hold him for you, but in return I need you to call the embassy in La Paz, Bolivia. Tell them to keep an eye out for this group of people." Then handing her a list with everyone's name from the group who was down in Bolivia.
"If they come to the embassy they will be in big trouble, and could even have a hit squad after them. They will also probably have enough evidence to get the CSS disbanded."
"OK, I have a class mate from the academy down there. He will look out for them."
They finish exchanging information but Wendy did not really have much
to add. Betty was glad that at least someone else knew what was going on.
