The inauguration of a new president of the United States occurs every four years, always on the 20th of January unless this is a Sunday in which case on Monday 21st January, in the year following the presidential election. The sequence of years is therefore 1997, 2001, 2005. It is a holiday in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia, and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia only.
