Relena remained there, sobbing on the cold tiles. Duo looked down at her, unsure of what to do. He gently pulled her to her feet.

"Relena, why don't you sit down? The floor isn't the best place for a princess," he said, trying to add humour to his tone.

She glared at him despite the flowing tears.

"Where is the best place for a princess, Duo? Tell me? Since when do you know what's best for me? Just leave me alone. Milliardo, can you ask Sally if I can see Heero, please? I really need to see for myself if he's okay," she said as she jerked away from Duo's grasp.

Her brother nodded, leaving Noin to look for Sally. He found her at the med bay doors, head in her hands.

"Sally, is everything alright? Relena wants to know if she can see him," he said.

She looked up from her hands.

"No, everything is not alright. I've gotten Heero stable, but he's just lost so much blood. I'm afraid we'll need to give him a transfusion, but his blood type is so rare. He's AB double negative[1]. It's so hard to find someone that matches him, and we won't have enough time to trace a person. Relena can see him if she doesn't mind the bruising all over him," she said.

He looked through the room window. There lay Heero, tubes coming from every orifice in his face. Nodding his head, he went back to the awaiting group.

Relena had quit her crying momentarily and let anger get the best of her for the time remaining. She was furious. Duo had no right to tell her what was best for her. He didn't know. She felt as though she was being torn up. She had to tell someone about them, she had to or she would burst. Her head shot up as Milliardo walked into the room. Jumping up from her seat, she ran to him, eyes questioning. He nodded approval and she let out a relieved sigh. Kissing his cheek, she ran to Heero's room.

Sally was waiting outside, head still in her hands.

"Sally, um, is it alright for me to see him? Is he conscious?" she asked, nervously.

Sally lifted her head and smiled at Relena. Taking her arm, she led her to the door, stopping before entering.

"Yes, it's alright to see him, but I'm afraid he isn't conscious yet. We just managed to stabilize him, but he needs a blood transfusion immediately. We've been on the vid-phone whole day trying to search various blood donor clinics and hospitals for a match. Don't be afraid by his appearance. He's still recognizable, he's just a little paler than usual. Shall we?" she asked, taking Relena's nod as her permission.

Opening the door, Relena's eyes went wide. Heero, the Perfect Soldier, was lying in a bed, tubes coming from his nose and mouth, lay. He was a terrible shade of bluish-grey, and his breathing seemed shallow. An oxygen pump kept his lungs from failing, and his eyes looked clenched, as though he was in immense pain. She tried to keep from crying again, but couldn't help it. The only man she loved was lying there, on the brink of death.

Sally pulled her aside into an embrace.

"Relena, please don't cry. There's a chance that Heero can still hear you. Don't let him hear you cry over him. Try to whisper soothing words to him, tell him that you're here and you won't leave him. If you can't see him right now, we can always arrange a special, more appropriate time for you to see him, okay? Do you want to leave?" she asked.

Relena nodded. Wiping her tears, she left the room, still too shaken to see him. Quatre and Trowa walked over to her and both placed hands on her shoulders, leading her to a seat.

"Relena, don't cry. It hurts, we know, but he's still alive. Always believe in miracles," Quatre said.

She nodded, suddenly taking his hand in hers.

"Please, can we speak? I just, oh I feel so ashamed of myself, but I need to tell someone, anyone. This has gone too far and I feel like I'm the cause of all this," she said desperately.

Nodding, Quatre took her to a secluded area in the hospital, noting Duo's following eyes.

"I, please don't say anything, just let me talk, please?" she asked, still very nervous.

He nodded.

"Thank you. Uh, I, Duo and I have been, um, having an affair. It's not what think, I mean it is, but we're nothing now. I just, I think that this whole 'Heero being hurt' is my fault. Duo came to talk to me one day at work and we ended up making out just as Heero walked in. He was so mad and he just left, saying that he hoped Duo would make me happy. I'm, sorry," she said as she began to tear.

Quatre listened, aghast. Eyes wide, he took her into his arms and let her weep.

"It was a mistake, don't worry. Heero loves you, everyone can see that. Duo, he's just an idiot. He did this, didn't he? He put you up to this whole affair thing?" Quatre asked.

She shook her head.

"No, I played a part in this. It isn't his fault, but I let him get to me. I can't even remember how this whole thing started. It just happened, and grew from there. I, I feel so dirty. I'm so ashamed of myself," she said, laying her cheek on his chest.

He couldn't believe that was true. Of all the people in the world, how could this Relena be at full fault for something she didn't instigate? He just couldn't believe...

"No, I refuse to hear you say it was your fault. It was a mistake, even I know that. Come on, let's just, let's go take a walk okay? Clear your head so you can see Heero," Quatre asked.

She shook her head once more.

"No, I don't feel like taking a walk. I want to see him now. Please, I mean, I need to see his face, I need to see for myself that he's okay. And, please, tell Trowa about what I said. He's close to me, but I just needed to talk with you. Tell, I don't know, tell the people you trust. I can't take hiding and sneaking around anymore," she said.

Relena was out of her mind. She wanted to let people know her dirty little secret, and at the same time, she sounded as though she didn't care if people knew. It was as though someone came and took over Relena's mind. She certainly wasn't thinking straight.

"No, I refuse to tell them. That's your business. I shouldn't be spreading this around. And furthermore, why would you ask that I do this? It could ruin you. I don't think you're mentally well, I think you're just stressed and-"

"And what? I'm a lunatic for wanting my friends to know? Maybe I am, but I want to get this off of me before I blow up!" she yelled.

He stepped back, knowing full well that this was not Relena.

"I don't even know you anymore. First you're this prim and proper Minister, and all of a sudden you're a cheating, unstable woman? What happened all this time? Why didn't you come to us before?" he asked.

"That's right, you don't know me. I honestly don't know what happened. What went on between Duo and I was this whirlwind of emotions and lust. I know in my heart that I don't love him, but yet I still let this go on. I'm just a horrible person," she said.

"No, you are not! Look at yourself! You can't even hear what is coming out of your mouth. Fine, if you want, I'll tell them, let them judge you, I can't do anything about it. This is the thanks I get for trying to help you," he gritted.

Nobody had ever seen a side of Quatre this way.

"I am thankful for your help, but I asked that you not criticize me. I'm going to see Heero now, I am fully calm, thanks to you," she said as she walked away.

This stressful time made everyone edgy, and Quatre knew that, so he forgave Relena for her actions.

Duo paced the hallway, fear and worries clouding his mind.

'What had Relena meant by 'I didn't know' and that 'we should have been there earlier'?'

He clenched his fist. This all made no sense. He knew Relena was in pain and shock, but she blamed it solely on him. It wasn't his fault at all. He just tried to let it fade because he knew she was worth more to him than some stupid little accusation. He only hoped Heero would pull through.

Hands in his pockets, he walked down the hall slowly, still contemplating. A hand came to rest on his shoulder.

Turning around, he saw Trowa.

"Duo, what's going on between you and Relena. Why would she blame you for nothing? Normally I wouldn't ask you such questions, but I can see something going on," he said.

Duo jumped back. Normally, Trowa was quiet, polite and didn't demand, but Duo knew better to try and hide.

"There isn't anything going on between me and jousan. She's just a little upset, that's all," he said, trying to ignore the subject.

Trowa grabbed a hold of his shoulder.

"Duo, I know you too well. You know you can't lie,"

Grabbing Trowa's arm off him, his eyes glared, glowing a dangerous shade of violet.

"I said, there is nothing going on, and I never lie," Duo said as he walked away.

Trowa watched as Duo walked away. Quatre walked up to him.

"There's something I think you should know. Go get your sister and Wufei, Relena wanted them to hear this too," Quatre said, his eyes full of concern.

Trowa walked over to Catherine and Wufei, they spoke briefly and soon were standing around Quatre.

"What is it?" Catherine asked.

"Just listen, don't say anything and don't react okay? Relena told me that I should tell you, and I'm simply relaying it back to you. Something has been going on behind our backs," Quatre said.

Walking down the hall slowly, Relena stopped, Duo was there.

"Let me pass please," she said, voice slightly shaky.

"No. We need to talk," he said, taking a hold of her shoulders.

"Let go of me. I want to see Heero now," she said as she shrugged his hands off and pushed him aside.

Walking faster, she didn't dare turn back.

The nurse nodded as Relena went in and her heart lurched.

Heero was laying there, bruised but he was still alive. Fresh tears came as she took a chair from the side and placed it next to Heero's bed. Grasping his cold palm, she tried to smile and speak to him without crying again.

"Heero, it's me. It's Relena. You've been hurt, you're at a Preventer's base on Earth. Akumi's dead. It's all over now. Listen to me- you're unconscious right now, but please come back to me. I love you. I wish we could go back to the way things were. I miss having you in my life. Please come back, for me," she said, grasping his hand a little tighter.

His heart monitor steadily beeped, jolts of green light shooting up and down on the screen. As long as she heard those beeps, she would be okay. Still holding onto his hand, she asked Sally to leave for a moment. She wanted some private time for herself.

Waving a silent goodbye, Sally exited, leaving Relena to speak with Heero. She only hoped that he would make it through. It was putting Relena through turmoil. Walking out to the lobby of the med bay, she acknowledged the others sitting down. Walking to Wufei, she fell into his embrace, closing her eyes against the fabric of his shirt.

Relena lay her head on top of his hand. Straining to remember the words of their song, she let one tear slip out her eye. She remembered their first anniversary as an official couple. He surprised her one day at work. She had been so caught up with papers and official documents, that she had plain forgotten about their special day. Of course, Heero not know knowing that, sent for three dozen roses.

Relena sat at her desk, one hand propping her already heavy head from falling to the oak desk.

Sighing heavily, she felt her head throb as countless numbers of phones rang outside her office. She felt sorry for her secretary Elizabeth. Throwing her hands up in defeat, she got up, shoved all her papers off her desk, walked to the door and declared that nobody speak for the next hour. Normally, Relena wasn't like this, but today was turning out to be worse and worse. Everyone outside froze. Never had they seen this side of the Vice-Foreign Minister. Quieting instantaneously, they all resumed their work, bidding farewell to whomever they were talking to on the phone. Smiling gratefully, she walked over to Elizabeth's desk, and unplugged the vid-phone.

"Elizabeth, please be my guest and take the day off. You've dealt with enough impatient diplomats over the phone for today. Take the day off, I'll be fine," she said, a smile spread across her face. Getting up, Elizabeth threw her arms around Relena.

"Oh thank you Minister! I won't ever forget this. Are you sure you'll be okay by yourself?" she asked.

Relena smiled.

"Of course I will. Now go on, have fun. I'll see you tomorrow," Relena said as she went back into her office.

Sitting at her desk, she kicked her feet up, and closed her eyes. From somewhere, she swore she could hear music. In fact, it kept getting louder each passing minute. Getting up, she opened her door and standing there, was Heero, boombox in one hand, and three dozen roses.

Gasping, she saw him gently place the boombox on the carpet and hand the roses to Relena.

"Happy anniversary Relena. I love you," he said as tears started to form in her eyes.

She'd forgotten about today. Wrapping her arms around him, she cried softly into his shoulder.

"I'm so sorry sweetheart. I forgot about today. I was so wrapped up in work that I had no time to get you anything. I'm a terrible girlfriend," she said.

Stroking her hair, he shushed her.

"No, you're not. You're my angel, the only thing I could ever ask for. Happy anniversary."

Looking up at him, she pouted, still upset about forgetting.

"I love you too. Thank you for surprising me. I liked it very much," she said as she leaned up to kiss him.

In the background, the boombox still played music...

Hey, I'd give anything,
all of the love I breathe [oh, oh yeah]
want to be closer to you,
where all my dreams come true
< I'd give anything...

That had become their song.

E n d f l a s h b a c k

Crying a little, she felt his hand twitch. Eyes moving upwards, she watched the monitor and then his face. Seeing nothing, she gripped his hand tighter and began to sing. She had finally remembered the tune.

Hold on and hope for better change.
Like the cloudy days
that wash away by the warm summer rain.
Singing songs,
as a way to carry on,
let my imagination take me where I belong.
Forever,
I'll be waiting for a day together [oh]
Hey, I'd give anything,
all of the love I breathe [oh, oh yeah]
want to be closer to you,
where all my dreams come true
I'd give anything.

So good,
never to return.
I'm on my way,
no holding back,
no bridges left to burn [bridges left to burn]
memories some may come and go,
but the ones that I remember,
are the ones that won't let go.

Forever,
I'll be waiting for a day together...
Hey, I'd give anything,
all of the love I breathe [oh, oh yeah]
want to be closer to you,
where all my dreams come true
I'd give anything.

There's a time and a place for everything,
lets hope I make it on the outside.
There's a world and its strange and in between,
let's hope I make it on the inside.

Hey, I'll give anything,
all of the love I breathe [oh, oh yeah]
want to be closer to you,
where all my dreams come true
I'd give anything.
I'd give anything
to be closer to you...

Choking on the last words, she let her head drop to the bed.

"Heero, please come back to me. I'd die without you. I really would give anything to be with you. There's a reason I left out love behind, and I'm so ashamed of it. Please come back to me. I love you with all my heart. Don't leave me," she said, tears falling.

Still holding onto his hand, she felt it twitch, once, twice. Whenever Heero did that, it meant he loved for her. She remembered all those boring diplomatic meetings where they would sit together, not being able to talk. One day when both had no work, he came up with a way for them to talk to each other, without sound and moving lips. Hand squeezing[2]. They would sit next to each other, passing messages back and forth to each other.

Head shooting up, she looked at his face, seeing his eyelids twitch. She gasped. Standing up, she rushed closer to his face. Holding his head in her hands, she spoke hurriedly.

"Heero? Are you awake?"

three squeezes [yes]

"Are you okay?"

Four squeezes [no]

"Do you want me to get Sally?"

Four squeezes again [no]

She let out a relieved sigh and hugged him, careful not to press too hard.

"I'm so glad you're okay. I thought I was going to lose you forever."

Two squeezes [aishiteru]

Seeing him at arms length, she let her quiet sobs sound through the room. He had come back to her.

Outside, Catherine gasped.

"I can't believe it. Why was Duo being so mean to her? Couldn't he see that she wasn't in the position to talk with him?" she asked.

Quatre shrugged.

"All I know is that we can't let him near her okay? If Heero wakes up and sees Duo, we're more than likely to see him end up dead. Heero can be very violent, even we know that. And apparently Heero knew about them," he said.

Wufei was angry, he knew that baka Duo would screw something up.

"Fine, he's not allowed near Relena,"

"We can't tell Hilde this, can we?" Trowa asked.

They all shook their heads no.

"Then we leave it up to Duo to explain," he finished.

[1] - AB double negative?!? Yes, I made it up...

[2] - okay, that's a little far-fetched, but hey! I'm writing this story. Besides, it added some of their history! And yes, I know that normally someone who lost THAT much blood would not be able to come to so fast, but hey, this is Heero Yuy we're talking about!

*** the song Relena sang was by Wave. It's called "I'd Give Anything". If you can, download it. It's such a beautiful song. ***

AN: Oh man... repost. What a terrible thing. Anyhow, I needed to fine tune the history 'cause chapter eight was like WHOA.... thank you to one reviewer who made me realize what a big mistake I made!!! I haven't written the finale for this story for so long, and silly me forgot all the little things that happened before. I have also changed a bit of chapter eight so yeah. And, please don't tell me that my characters are outta wack, I KNOW THAT. It's my story, that's why they're all like that, get it??? Thanks to all!
