The Gundam Mark II is a prototype mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation's elite Titans force. It was created as a movable frame testbed, and this revolutionary design concept gives the Mark II superb performance and maneuverability. Like its namesake, the original RX-78 Gundam, the Mark II is armed with a beam rifle, two beam sabers, and an optional bazooka. Though it lacks the traditional head-mounted vulcan guns, the Mark II can be equipped with an external vulcan pod system.

The Gundam Mark II was completed in December of UC 0086, whereupon testing began at the Titans' Green Noa headquarters. In March of the following year, all three prototype units were stolen by the AEUG resistance group. The AEUG retained unit 03 as a combat mobile suit, using the other two as sources of spare parts. While unit 03, now repainted in more traditional colors, went on to become one of the AEUG's flagship mobile suits, its dismantled siblings enabled the AEUG and Anaheim Electronics to discover all the secrets of the Titans' movable frame technology.

Though the Gundam Mark II is heavily damaged on several occasions, it proves itself to be one of the AEUG's most versatile and valuable mobile suits. Initially piloted by Camille Bidan, it's passed on to Titans defector Emma Sheen when Camille receives the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam. Emma is fatally injured, and the Mark II wrecked, during the final battle against the Titans on February 21, UC 0088. One month later the Mark II is repaired and assigned to new AEUG recruit Elle Vianno, who uses it throughout the first Neo Zeon conflict.
