As the Gryps conflict escalates, Anaheim Electronics and the AEUG resistance group are hard at work on the top-secret Zeta Project. This development program ultimately culminates in the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, a transforming mobile suit capable of fighting both on Earth and in space. The Hyaku Shiki - meaning "Model 100" - is a spinoff of the Zeta Project, an abandoned transforming design which was redesigned into a supremely agile non-transforming mobile suit. Based on the Rick Dias, it incorporates Anaheim's first attempt at a movable frame, plus a pair of vernier binders for extra maneuverability. Though the Hyaku Shiki's armor is relatively light, it's protected by tough Gundarium Gamma alloy, plus a layer of golden-hued anti-beam coating.

In April of UC 0087, the Hyaku Shiki is assigned to AEUG ace pilot Quattro Bajina - actually the legendary Red Comet, Char Aznable - for combat testing. Char continues flying this golden mobile suit throughout the Gryps conflict, until the final battle against the Titans on February 22 of the following year. In this ferocious conflict, the Titans are defeated, and Char himself disappears. The Hyaku Shiki is subsequently reconstructed, and in July of UC 0088 it's assigned to the new pilots of the AEUG flagship Argama.
