On December 18, 1620, passengers on the British ship Mayflower come ashore at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony. The famous Mayflower story began in 1606, when a group of reform-minded Puritans in Nottinghamshire, England, founded their own church, separate from the state-sanctioned Church of England. Accused of treason, they were forced to leave the country and settle in the more tolerant Netherlands. After 12 years of struggling to adapt and make a decent living, the group sought financial backing from some London merchants to set up a colony in America. On September 6, 1620, 102 passengers--dubbed Pilgrims by William Bradford, a passenger who would become the first governor of Plymouth Colony--crowded on the Mayflower to begin the long, hard journey to a new life in the New World.

On December 4, 2000, a computer virus of unprecedented virulence, borne by an e-mail message proclaiming ''ILOVEYOU,'' raced over the world via e-mail, crashing e-mail systems and destroying data on millions of computers. The rogue computer program, which was activated when a user clicked on an attachment in the e-mail, preyed particularly on users of Microsoft's popular Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail programs. Once activated, it automatically re-sent itself to the user's entire Outlook address book, thus accounting for its rapid spread. The program also attempted to send passwords to a Web site in the Philippines, but the site was shut down early on after its managers realized that the site's systems were being used by the author or authors of the virus. The ''Love Bug'' caused an estimated $10 billion in damage, and affected the White House, Congress, the Pentagon, and the British House of Commons, along with numerous corporations. At 23-year-old Filipino hacker, Onel de Guzman, was soon arrested as the author of the virus. However, because the Philippines did not have anti-hacking laws at the time, he was not prosecuted. He claimed the virus was released accidentally from his computer. The world is fortunate that Guzman did not design the virus to be more deadly; it destroyed MP3 audio files and JPEG picture files but easily could have been written to delete every file in the hard drive.
