A Brief History of Gangs in America |

Gangs first came on the scene around the end of the Civil War. They were called Redeemers. Later they became Ku Klux Klan. The Movie "Gangs of New York" teaches a story about the recruitment and the political impact that gangs have on Society. The gangs that formed in New York were formed from Irish and Italian immigrants who came over before the Civil War. |

Latinos got into the street gang scene around the turn of the Century, following the Spanish American War. It wasn't until the 1930's that the Blacks got into the Street War Scene. |

By the 1960's, Following the Korean War, the Blacks got into the Street Gang Scene as an organized, Politically active group. This began with the Black Panthers. First formed to protect the community because the police refused to aid Blacks and poor at that time, as well as, now. The Panthers were the first truly organized Gang. Their Leader, Huey P. Newton bore a striking resemblance to the character that played "Cyrus" in The Warriors movie. |

As the Panther's disappeared off the scene, Raymond Washington was 15 years old. He started a group called The Baby Avenues. They evolved into the Crips, formed as a minor thug group with no vision or sense of direction. Stan "Big Tookie" Williams came into the group and moved the group into prominence. Hollywood glorified the gang and this made them seem more important at the time. The Crips got their name from a member who happened to be crippled. |

By the 1970's, the Bloods (representing the old cowboy and indian theme of Blood Brothers) came into prominence. Both Gangs have been enemies and have been feuding every since. |

The newest addition to this group is one which I title "the Bible Belt Mafia". Coming soon to a city near you. |

There are loose groups of 25,000 Crips in the U. S. that are known. In America as a whole, there are 730,000 gang members. As the economy worsens, the numbers increase. There are also Thousands of Chinese gang members, Latinos, Jews, Whites, and others. ENTER the Era that I call "NEW JACK CITY,II". |
