I'm great thanks man. Cheers for asking us to do this interview!
2. Can you give us the history of the band, how it all started?
We formed not that long ago. Only a few months. Basically I wanted to jam with Shane and Matt, as we'd been mates for years and had been in bands together in the past. Plus I knew Ollie and knew he was a sick vocalist, so we wrote a few songs together, and then we got Paul involved as a second vocalist quickly after. We've recently also found ourselves a drummer in the form of Lyn from the UK death/thrash band Decapity.
3. Can you tell us why you have chosen "Crepitation" as bands name? Do you think it fits well to your musick style?
Well, Crepitation is the sound of bones and cartlidge rubbing together. There was no particuar reason to why we picked the name other than the fact that we thought it sounded cool.
4. Your "Promo 2006" has been out for a while. Are you satisfied with the results?
The Promo has achieved what it was supposed to, which is showcasing our sound in it's early stage. It's only a bunch of quick recordings we made, most of it was done in only a few takes, and then I mastered them quickly to give it a more consistant sound. The production could have been better, and it could have been tighter, but for what it is - we're all pretty happy
with it. Be asured that the new material will destroy it, musically and production wise.
5. How have the zines and websites reacted to your musick so far?
Pretty well actually. Some people haven't been keen on the production, but that's fair enough, like I said before, it's not as good as it could be. But so far people have loved the music - which is the important thing. I don't think we've heard any negative really so far!
6. I believe you guys are preparing a split with "Age of Suffering" and "Kastrated".
Can you tell us more about it? What can you say about the bands that you are sharing releases with?
Well, these are early days yet. We're writing new material and then we're gonna be jamming with Lyn for a couple of months before we go to record it.
We're all very excited about it and are looking forwards to it though. We've not confirmed any deals with labels yet, although some labels have shown some interest - anyone interested though get in touch with us!
About the other bands, Age of Suffering are a pretty young band, but don't let that put you off - these guys are good. I heard their old demo and I was impressed by it. Lots of slams and guttural vocals. They tell me that their new material is faster than the demo, and it'll be a lot heavier Kastrated are great too, I saw them about a year ago supporting Nile and they were really good. In my opinion they were far more entertaining than Nile. Musically, they remind me of a cross between earlier Cryptopsy and Devourment. They're definetly a band to keep your eye out for!
7. I heard your songs on your Myspace page, you guys have a lot of slamming riffs and i fuckin love it!! What bands influence you the most when you write musick?
I go through phases I think with who I'm influenced by. Devourment are always an influence to me of course, they're probably my favourite death metal band. I'm also heavily influenced by Vomit Remnants, Suffocation,
Deeds of Flesh, Despondency. The other guys are influenced by other stuff, but I guess our core influences would be Devo and VR. You'll hear a lot of
faster influences in our new stuff though.
8. And how do you go about writing musick?
We're a bit unconventional actually. Me, Shane and Matt live quite close together, but the other guys are spread across the country at the moment. Usually we start with some ideas I've got, then Shane and Matt add their parts and we structure them and record them. Then we send what we've got to Paul and Ollie and they record their parts and send them back. I guess
we'll start doing things differently now that Lyn is in the band.
9. Is it true that you will be having a drummer? Is he the guy from Decapity? How did you get in cuntact with him?
Haha. Yeah - as I mentioned before, we have a new drummer named Lyn. He plays for Decapity, and a black metal band called Nexus Infernus. I've known him for a long time actually, he played in Trephined with Andy from Sarpanitum before Sarpanitum was formed and I gigged with them in old bands so I knew him from back then. He's a very good drummer - definetly a step up from my programming haha!
10. Do you sniff your grandmother's underwear and masturbate afterwards?
Wow. That's a weird question. Do you? If so - you're weird haha! That's really not really my thing.
11. If you are to be a serial killer, who would you be and what sorts will your victims be?
I'd be someone with a cool name. My victims would be emo bands, and symphonic black metal bands haha.
12. Have you ever cuntemplated about how such serial killers feel about lyricists and gore enthusiasts such as yourselves using their twisted state of mind for lyrics and themes?elaborate.
You know man, that's a really good point! I've never thought about that actually. I guess it would change from person to person, and how they felt about what they'd done. Some might think it was pretty cool, and I guess others would be pretty upset about it. I'm sure they have worse things to worry about though.
13. Who writes the lyrics anyway? =)
Haha. We haven't got any. We take inspiration from various things for titles: gore movies (good old ones, none of this slasher rubbish), interesting ideas, and things that we just think are funny. We might eventually write some lyrics to the rhythms, but at the moment the music is more important to us.
14. How do you feel about the impact of Mp3's on metal and music in general?
I think it's actually a good thing. I download stuff to check it out, but if I like something I'll always buy it unless it's unavailable. A true fan will always buy the product, for me part of the joy is owning it, having cool packaging to check out, lyrics to read and all that.
15. What kind of drum machine do you use? gadgets?
It's programmed with software. Cubase SX for the programming and the drum samples are taken from various sources. Some I've found on sample CDs, but
some parts like the snare trigger is sampled from a cd, and the bass drum trigger is sampled from an Aleisis trigger brain.
16. Ollie and Paul, you do some cricket and piggy style vokills or whatever you want to call them(hehe!) any particular vocalist you look up to?
Ollie: Too many to mention. But I'm an inhale vocalist. I remember being new to death metal and hearing that Jamie from Brodequin did them and I just thought "how is that even possible?" then back about a year ago I started giving them some practice. There's loads I love though.
17. Aside from playing in the band, what do you fuckers do during your spare time? Do you engage orgies for fun?
Haha. Nothing that galmourous I'm afraid. Some of us work, some of us are at uni/college. I'm currently unemployed and looking for a new job and I'm planning to go back to uni this year to do a music production course. Music is pretty much my only hobby, but I do like photography and I'm slowly teaching myself that as well as some digital manipulation and stuff. I'm not too hot yet, but I'm getting there. I've designed some flyers for gigs, and did the artwork for my other band Imindain's demo.
18. Give us your thoughts on the following bands:
Oh dear...
Infant Bile - I used to play guitar for em. Matt still plays bass for em. Good, fun stuff. Crepitation is better though haha.
After the last sky - Shane plays bass for em. Kinda sludgy hardcore. Interesting stuff.
Sarpantium - I used to be their vocalist, but I was fired a month or so ago because of various reasons. I still get on with the guys though, good lads. I think they are a good, original band who will go far.
Devourment - Best modern death metal band around. A massive influence on me. I can't give them enough praise.
Digested Flesh - I enjoyed the CD, I thought the drum sound could have been better - they really needed triggered kicks. But theres some good riffs and nice grooves.
Artery Eruption - are awesome. I wasn't too keen on their first CD, but after that they've improved with each release. Vocals are really sick, and they know how to use a groove. Definetly a band to check out if you're not
man (or woman) enough to have done so already.
19. How would you describe Crepitation's musick?
It's like Devourment and Vomit Remnants inspired slam sections, meets the blasting of Deeds of Flesh and Suffocation. Rounded off with a fat chunk of Despondency, with a simpler Mortician esque approach. Totally guttural sick vocals vs fast piggy ones.
20. You sickfucks are involved on other bands, how do you manage to maintain the style of musick individualized for your other projects?
I actually only play in 2 bands now. I used to be in a lot more. My other band is a funeral/death doom metal band called Imindain for whom I also play guitar. I've played for them since they started about 4 years ago.
Shane plays bass in After the Last Sky who are very different also from the style we play in Crepitation, and Matt plays in Infant Bile as well - although I don't know how active they are at the moment. All the bands are
very different to what we do in Crepitation, so that means that the projects are all original.
21. Do you know anything about the "scene" in the Philippines? Hows the "scene" in your place? Any sick bands you want to recomend?
I can't think of any bands I'm afraid, but I quite a few guys from the net who are crazy, dedicated supporters of extreme metal over there. You also seem to have a lot of web/printzines which is cool, they seem to have died out a lot over here in the UK - especially recently which sucks.
The scene here is picking up a bit in the recent years. We're having three times the ammount of gigs we used to and bands are playing outside London as well which is great. The ammount of bands hasn't really changed, but things are definetly on the up. It could still be a lot better though, gigs sometimes suffer poor turn outs, or apathetic crowds who'd rather hear the latest Killswitch Engage rip off... but hey - fuck them.
22. What can we expect from Crepitation in a couple of years from now?
Who knows?
Hopefully a full length, a lot of gigs under our belt, and better stuff!
23. That ends the interview... Thanks for your time bro.. Anything you would like to add? STAY SICK!!
Thanks very much for your interest and support bro! Thanks also to everyone who's supported us so far, and to anyone who checks us out, buys a cd, writes to us etc. Unless it's hate mail and then I don't want to thank you. Haha. You can download the entire promo from our myspace site at www.myspace.com/crepitation and check out our website at www.darkelite.co.uk/crepitation
Thanks again, and stay brutal!!!
