Chainsaw Surgery Interview

Interviewed by: Jamie
Answered by: Justin & Robert

1. Hello Justin & Robert! How are things going?

Hi Jamie! First of all, thanks a lot for the review and interview. We’re doing great at the moment, although our personal lives tend to be pretty busy at times. That also explains the huge delay on the interview, sorry for that bro.

2. Please tell us the history of the band, How it all started?

It all started in the early days of 2005, with the two of us as founding (dis)members. We already knew our guitarist and bassist, but it was a struggle to get the band complete. To get acquainted, we started playing some jam sessions. Later, when the line-up was complete, the band became more serious. In March 2006 we released our first promo CD ‘Chainsaw Surgical Disfigurement.’ Will Rahmer (Mortician) from Redrum Records gave us the opportunity to release our debut album under his label. Since then we’ve been working on our first full length CD entitled: ‘Abdominal Purulency.’ Unfortunately, both guitarists quit the band last year. This pretty much screwed up our release planning. Nonetheless, we’re doing our best get our CD out somewhere in 2008 and it promises to be brutal as hell.

3. Tell us why you have chosen CHAINSAW SURGERY as the bands name; do you think it fits well to your musick style?

Robert came up with this sick name. When he threw it into the group we all agreed on it without a moment of doubt. To our ears ‘Chainsaw Surgery’ sounds really gore and it matches the musick. That’s very important to us. In addition to that, we’re pleased to say that the readers of RollingStone.com ranked us 4th in their list of the "Twenty Most Gruesome Band Names." Pretty crazy.

4. Your demo "Chainsaw Surgical Disfigurement" has been out for a while, are you satisfied with the results?

At first, yes. The demo sounds pretty good for a first recording, especially the rawness. However, as time passed we got somewhat bored with the tracks. The song structures are far too simple. To make our musick more interesting, we’ve started writing new songs with a higher variety of influences and new inspirations. This has resulted in totally different songs with more variety and brutalism.

5. Did anything go as you planned? If not, what would you like to have done differently?

Absolutely not! We planned to release the full length CD in 2006, but due to piles of shit (mainly changes in line-up), we had no choice but to postpone the release to somewhere in 2008.

6. How have the zines, labels, bands and all the motherfuckers reacted to your musick so far?

The responses are really awesome. MySpace has proven to be a great medium to reach a global audience, since there isn’t much of a metal scene in our hometown. We’ve had great demo reviews from zines in e.g. Peru and the USA. We hope our full-length will crush the demo and get even more attention in the global death/grind scene.

7. How do you go about writing musick? And how much time do you spend to decompose a shit?

At first, we just played jamsessions to make the songs. Frankly enough, this took way too much time. So when we released our promo CD, we decided to make the songs on a different way: all songs (and structures) were already written, we just had write the riffs. For the full-length, we’re planning on recording one big improvised drum session divided in 9 songs with a total length of approx. 30 minutes. After that we’ll add the guitars and vocals.

8. What are the bands strongest musical and non-musical influences at the moment?

Non-musical: lots of Gore/Horror/Splatter movies, documentairies and beer (we are definitely alcohol fueled). Musical: bands like Mortician, Torsofuck, Disgorge (Mex).

9. Robert, you spew out disgusting gutturals! Any particular vocalist you look up to?

Thanks dude, I’m glad you like my vokills. Will Rahmer (Mortician) is my major inspiration. I think he surely is one of the best vocalists around. As far as it comes to the gutturals, my inspirations are Mikko (Torsofuck) and Andres (Pustulated).

10. Justin, your drumming skills are fuckin awesome. What bands in particular have influenced your playing style?

Thanks bro, always good to hear! I play a wide array of styles, since I find it rather boring to play full throttle all the time. However, I practice my blast beats by playing along with for example Martyr (NL), Brutus, Hate Eternal and Mortician. Apart from that I always keep my ears open for new inspiration. If I hear something cool in whatever song, I just try to implement it in our music.

11. Aside from playing in the band, what do you sickos do during your spare time? Do you engage in orgies for fun? =)

Robert: My Management studies takes up most of my precious time. I spend the rest of my time checking out the most rancid horror movies and hanging out with my friends and Hertog Jan (Dutch beer brand).
Justin: Firstly, my International Business studies takes up a lot of time. Next to that, I work out every few days and play drums for fun. Recently, I also purchased a guitar so that’s going to be a whole new challenge. Frankly enough I have to disappoint all the ladies out there, because I’m already occupied.

12. And do you any projects besides CxSx?

Yeah we do. Together we once did a melodic death metal studio project called ‘Executed’ a few summers ago, which took like two days. Also we both made a once-in-a-lifetime black metal appearance with our diabolical live project ‘Grafschennis’, Dutch for Grave Desecration.

13. How would you depict CxSx on stage? And how does the crowd normally retort to your musick?

Our live performances, although few in numbers, were described as total chaos (triggered snare/bassdrums, downtuned guitars and sick vocals). Depending on the audience, the musick is sometimes too extreme or too fast for the crowd, hehe.

14. Speaking of live ejaculations, what do you consider your most memorable gig so far?

Definitely our show at the Mezz (Breda, Holland). It is the biggest venue we’ve performed at. The atmosphere was great and there was lots of free beer, hehe. But seriously, the whole evening was arranged very professionally. We had a private back stage room with plenty of food and drinks AND we had over an hour to sound check our equipment. That evening we raped the audience at 240BPM, with peeks up to 280BPM.

15. You've got some cool track titles such as "Chainsaw Surgical Disfigurement", "Preserving Decayed Organs", "Necropsy" and "Distortion of Anatomy". Who writes the lyrics and where does the inspiration cum from?

Robert writes all the lyrics. The major inspiration cums from horror movies and documentaires about serial killers and brutal homicides. If you already like the titles you just mentioned, than you should really check out the new track titles! They will slit your guts!

16. Do you think it should be gore/porn lyrics because it fits the musick better?? Why not about religion, politics and other social concerns? Anyway, what are your thought on the following subjects i've mentioned? =)

Every band should write lyrics that work best for them. We don’t care about social concerns and there are already too many bands with anti-religious lyrical themes anyway. We want to emphasize our musick, that’s why we don’t publish the lyrics. However, you can’t just spew out vocals at random, so we’ve chosen to stick with some gore/porn lyrics that fit our general interest in serial killers and horror movies.

17. Do you have a great admiration to serial killers?

Justin: No, I don’t think that the obsession to take other people’s lives is something to admire.
Robert: I think serial killers are quite interesting persons. I try to imagine what is on their mind when they murder people and I use this for my lyrics. For instance: Bob Berdella (Kansas City Butcher), known for murders/mutilations/rapings/acts of cannibalism. He’s a sick motherfucker and I just wonder why did these acts of insanity.

18. Have you ever contemplated about how such serial killers feel about lyricist and gore enthusiast such about yourselves, using their twisted state of mind for lyrics and themes? Elaborate.

Interesting question. Never really thought about this issue, but probably paying any attention to these maniacs will encourage them to continue their insanity.

19. If you are to be a serial killer, who would you be and what sorts will your victims be?

Would you mind if we pass on this question? Just combine a necrocannibal with gorgeous young women.. and shaved pussies, hehe.

20. And how would you like to die??

Justin: in peace and with dignity, if any left.
Robert: probably the same

21. Just wondering, your full length title is supposed to be "Cannibalistic lust for embryonic food". What made you come to a decision to alter it into "ABDOMINAL PURULENCY"?

Absolutely true. The delay on the release gave us more time to think about the album title. After a while, we decided to change it because it was too long to recall. From that view ‘Abdominal Purulency’ is more catchy and we think it sounds more brutal. So, ‘Cannibalistic lust..’ was more like a temporary working title.

22. You'll be releasing debut Full length on Redrum Records, how did you hook up with this label and what's the bands deal with the label?

We’ve met Will Rahmer (Mortician/Redrum Records Label Owner) at a Mortician show in Holland. Backstage we talked about Chainsaw Surgery. He gave us his business card and after that we kept in cuntact. When we released ‘Chainsaw Surgical Disfigurement’, we sent the first copy to Redrum Records. Will Rahmer was immediately interested in signing us for a copies-only deal. The rest is history.

23. Do you have any other label interest besides Redrum records?

We had to choose between a couple of labels, but after we met Will Rahmer in Holland we already decided that we would sign with his label if he showed interest.

24. How's the recording process as the studio shit goes?

We’ll hit the studio before the end of 2007 to record the drums. All other stuff will be recorded in 2008. For now, it is hard to tell how this will go, but we’re confident that the result will blow you away.
25. What's the scene like in Netherlands these days? Any new sick bands worth mentioning? And do you know of any bands from the Philippines? Are you aware of the Asian Scene?

We have nothing to complain about the Dutch scene. There are a fair amount of gore/grind bands (e.g. Last Days of Humanity, Rompeprop) and death metal bands (e.g. Brutus, Severe Torture, Disavowed, Prostitute Disfigurement). As far as the Philippine bands go; we know Down from the Wound, Phlegm Thrower, Pus Vomit and Human Mastication. Concerning the rest of the Asian scene; there are quite a few brutal Asian bands out there!

26. What are the shit presently spinning on your players?

Justin:
Brutus – Slachtbeest
Metallica – ..And Justice For All
Emeth – Insidious
Dimmu Borgir – In Sorte Diaboli
Trivium - Ascendency

Robert:
Last Days of Humanity – Putrefaction in Progress
Infected Flesh – Anthropophagical Devourment
Disgorge (mex) – Forensick
Mortician – Hacked Up For Barbeque
Torsofuck – Erotic Diarrhea Fantasy

27. Thanks for your time answering this shit, Best of luck with the band! Anything you'd like to add?

Thanks for this interview and stay utterly sick! Although that shouldn’t be a problem. Everyone should check out our new CD ‘Abdominal Purulency’ when it’s out. It will rape your ears every time you hear it. Cheers mate.
