       The BH-33E introduced a steel tube fuselage; it was sold to
       Yugoslavia and the USSR. The BH-33L also had new wings, and was
       powered by liquid-cooled Skoda engine. This was the standard Czech
       fighter of the '30s.

       Czechoslovakian jet trainer, selected in 1963 as the standard jet
       trainer of the Warsaw pact countries. The L-29 is a mid-wing
       aircraft with a T-tail. Wings are unswept, and jet intakes are
       in the wing roots. 3568 were built, for 14 different air forces.

       Over 2500 were built. The L-39 is a straightforward low-wing jet
       aircraft with tandem seating. The large, D-shaped overwing jet
       intakes are an easy recognition feature; they were designed to
       reduce the risk of FOD when using rough airfields. 2828 were
       delivered, the majority to the USSR.

       This is basically a development of the {L-39} with a Western jet
       engine and Western instruments. After the breaking up of the
       Warsaw Pact, Aero had lost its huge Russian market. The new engine
       is lighter, more powerful and more fuel-efficient, but it is also
       three times as expensive as the AI-25.

S 92, Avia
       This was the Messerschmitt {Me 262} jet fighter, as built in
       Czechoslovakia. The USSR handed over captured tools and parts to
       Avia, in addition to parts already under production in
       Czechoslovakia during WWII, which included the engines. 
       17 were built, and a few saw squadron service in 1950-1951.
S 99, Avia
       Czech version of the Messerschmitt {Bf 109}G. This was built in
       Czechoslowakia in the late years of WWII. After the end of the war,
       production continued as the S 99 until the stock of DB 605 engines
       was exhausted. Then production switched to the {S 199}.

       A post-war version of the Messerschmitt {Bf 109}G, built by Avia
       with a Junkers Jumo 211 engine becuase the original DB 605 was no
       longer available. The S 199 was difficult to fly and never popular,
       but became famous as the first fighter of the Israeli air force.

S-231, Letov
       Derivative of the {S-131}. The S-231 was modified considerably,
       with as most noticeable change a Townend ring around the engine
       and single-leg landing gear. It was inferior to the Avia {B.534},
       and only 26 were built. They were then passed on the Spanish
       republican government, and fought in the civil war.
