Finally Sukumar Azhikode is in form (Recall that Forum criticized Azhikode on his stand on Guruvayoor Issue) in this article.

Azhikode talks about the ignorance which prevailed around the current Athirathram. "AtY®Z« As¢º® ¨O¡¿X« h±É« F¼¡X¤ ©lal¬¡K¬¡Y¡´q¢v Ac¬Yhc¡i i¡o®Jh¤c¢ dsi¤¼Y®. " One may recall that when Ganapathy came forward to write down Mahabharata, Vyasa put a stringent condition that he should write only if he understood what was being recited!

About the power of all these 'manthras and yajnas' Azhikode asks "C±YJ¡kh¡i¢¶¤« ek¢´¡¨Y ©d¡iY® Fɤ¨J¡Ù®?" Brilliant!

The current circus at Panjal has been hi-jacked by Hindu Fundamentalists . Azhikode has made reference to this "d¡º¡q¢v Otµ¡o«M¡Tc« G¨×T¤·lt l¢m§p¢z¤dj¢n·¤« g¡jY£il¢O¡j©J±zl¤« C´Z¨i¡¼¤h¤j¢i¡T¡· J¤©s cØ¥Y¢j¢h¡j¤h¡i¢j¤¼©¿¡."

I believe that Namboothiri Community has been unwittingly used as a tool in the current affair.

Azhikode also criticizes the current attack on Western Education (means the English instituted current education). "B©Èdl¢nih¡i m¥c¬¡lo®Z AT¤·J¡k¨· o¦n®T¢i¡X®." Azhikode is 100% right here. The debacle happened after 1947!

The Panjal people failed to invite several authorities on Vedas. This include Azhikode himself. "Cª ©kKJ¨Ê ©dt Hj¡O¡j¬c¡v c¢t©Àm¢´¨¸¨¶Æ¢k¤« Y¶¢©¸¡i¢ F¼® As¢º¤. Fɤ¨J¡Ù®?" Well, there is no place for an untouchable (who is not even a Shudra) like Azhikode in an Athirathram! Azhikode already knows the consequence of such a dialog!

±f¡p®hXt´® m¥±at bt©½¡d©am« ¨Oi®Y¡v Al¨Ê l¡i¢k¤« J¡Y¢k¤« Y¢q¸¢µ F» Hr¢´X« (hc¤o®h¦Y¢, 8, 272) F¼¤ l¢b¢i¤Ù®.

It is interesting that Lord Krishna was not a Brahman nor a Kshathriya, but a mere Yadava. SamkhyaYoga 42-46 from Gita has been quoted by Azhikode (*).

"J¢X×¢v YlqJ¨q©¸¡¨k Jr¢ij¤¨Y¼¤ dU¢¸¢µ l¢©lJ¡czu l¢m§p¢z¤l¢c¤ o§£J¡j¬c¡J¤©h¡?" Well, it is not surprising that Swami Vivekananda himself limited appeal for the so called protectors of Vedas, Brahmins.

Where was Azhikode in 1975?

Having credited Azhikode for the current article, one is curious to know where was Prof Azhikode in 1975? Azhikode's article has no mention of the earlier Athirathra at Panjal.

Where were the other intellectuals of Kerala? Sleeping??

Looking Back at Athirathram of 1975

Panjal Yagam is not a new phenomena. In fact the first Athirathram (Yagam) in modern times was conducted between 12th and 24th  April, 1975 at Panjal, Trichur. Then many Jan Sangh activists opposed and even went on hunger strike against some of the proceedings of Panjal. One of them was an attempt to sacrifice a goat by suffocation. Panjal was that time financed and sponsored by a Dutchman Frits Staal,. His primary objective was to write a treatise on how 'we' conducted such activities thousands of years ago. Kerala Namboothiris mistook that as geneuine interest and endorsement of the traditions, which it was certainly not! In reality Namboothiri community and the Yagam itself were used as specimens for his research.

This kind of worship of Western Researchers have resulted in Namboothiri Home Page itself quoting Mr Staal! "according to Frits Staal, "In a distant corner of South West India, Kerala, far away from the original home of Vedic civilization, a few families among the isolated and orthodox community of Namboothiri Brahmanans have maintained their Vedic tradition and continue to perform two Vedic rituals; Agnishthomam (Somayaagam), which lasts for five days and uses the sacred plant "Soma" (from which is derived, the name Somayaagam) and Agnichayanam (Agni or Athiraathram), which lasts for twelve days and continue through some nights (from which the name Athiraathram)." "

Though Staal himself has got all the information from 'us (India)', Namboothiri Page extensively quote Staal and even say that "Frits Staal, from The Netherlands and now settled in the United States, is, in the whole Vedic history the first non-Namboothiri allowed to see and attend the 1975 Yaagam, a Vedic ritual. He organised, attended and studied the Athiraatram at Paanjaal, in Thrissur district"

Well, there we have it. Yaagam organizers waved the "Ayitham" for Staal, probably because they considered him more Namboothiri than Namboothiris themselves! Staal went on to write a book "Agni" which was priced at $2000 a piece!! Staal's primary objective was to collect valuable material for his book. Why didn't an educated Kerala Namboothiri write a book instead?

Now Finnish Indologist Prof Asko Purpola is involved though to a lesser extent. Purpola is basically an authority on Indus Valley Civilization. His team has been doing research on Dravidian Civilization, languages and people in recent times. The writer do not have more information on him, except that he has been at Panjal just before the Yagam started.

Study of old civilizations, even rituals from a historical perspective is required. But it becomes a farse when our people start justifying and defending age-old rituals and superstitions even today and end up worshipping Western Sahibs (who are trying to use us a guinea-pigs) and become puppets of their plan!

One Vedic site says "In countries like America, England, France, Germany etc. many Universities have facilities for study of Veda. Major Universities like Harward have published Vedic Books. International Cultural Institutions like Smithsonian Institution and Rock Foundation have extended substantial financial assistance even for performance of major Vedic Rituals like Athirathram. But in our country, there are very few universities having facility for study of Veda. Still fewer have to their credit publication of Vedic Books. Even temples having income of astronomical magnitude are not coming forward to support study of Veda."

True enough. Who is responsible for this debacle? The people who monopolized the rights to Vedas or others? West study Veda from a historical angle. We from a ritualistic angle. There is a big difference.

This lavish praise of Western intererest in Vedas contradict what the Union Minister said during the current Athirathra. Azhikode asks about it "©ladUcc¡m·¢c® D·jl¡a¢Jw d¡m®O¡Y¬j¡¨X¼® ©lal¢a§¡u (?) Bi ©J±zh±É¢ dsºY¡i¢ s¢©¸¡t¶¤Ù®."

In fact, Hindus in Modern India failed to even write a proper book on Indian Mythology. That was done by none other than Vettam Mani, a Catholic from Kerala who became branded as an authority on Indian Mythology when he wrote a monumental volume "Puranic Encyclopædia".
