In the Silver Millennium, Hotaru was one the guardians of the outer solar system, summoned by Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. She was the Princess of Saturn. Hotaru lives in seclusion with her father, Professor Tomoe Souichi during the S season. He sold his soul when she was killed in a lab experiment to bring her back to life. Her mother died when she was young. She is an isolated and lonely child with no friends because of her mysterious healing power. Her body is weak and she gets tired easily. She can create large blasts of energy. She becomes friends with Chibi Usa.
Uranus and Neptune try to kill her to stop her from causing the destruction of the planet. She later becomes Mistress Nine, and almost destroyed the planet until Sailor Moon stopped her. Together they destroyed Pharaoh 90. (I assume, it never really says in the anime.) After the battle, Saturn is reborn as a baby. Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna raise her during the SuperS season. They all return to Tokyo when Saturn predicts a disastrous event about to happen at the beginning of the Stars season. She is killed by Uranus and Neptune whenever they pretend to ally themselves with Galaxia.
She wields the Silence Glaive. Her attacks are Death Reborn Revolution and Silence Glaive Apply. She doesn't transform at all during the television series. In the manga she uses the attack Silence Wall and transforms with "Saturn crystal power, make up".
