Shinji is the main character of Evangelion. He doesn't get along well with his father. Before he came to NERV, Shinji hadn't seen his father for ten years. His mother died when he was a child. He lives with Katsuragi Misato and her penguin Pen Pen in her apartment. He's not very good at dealing with other people, though he did manage to make two friends in Tokyo 3. He tends to seek favor with others so that they do not hate him, defining himself by their opinion of him. Even though he hates his father, he wants his father to be proud of him and lives for his praise. He has seen a lot of death and destruction as an Eva pilot, even the death of one of his friends and the near death of another. Shinji's sanity at times becomes unstable, at least in my opinion. However he proves his strength time and time again, despite his occasional cowardly moments. He likes being alone, often listening to the same two tracks over and over again. (25 and 26 for those who are curious.) Shinji changes greatly over the course of the series, going from a cowardly boy only out to find some worth in his fathers eyes at the beginning to defining himself without the opinions of others and liking himself for who he is at the very end.
