Van is the king of Fanelia on Gaea. He has an older brother, Folken, who disappeared after he failed the test to be king: obtaining a dragon energist. While searching for his own energist, Van is accidentally transported to Earth, where he meets Kanzaki Hitomi. He pilots the incredibly powerful Ispano Guymelf, Escaflowne. Escaflowne has two forms: a regular Guymelf form and a dragon form. Van is a descendant of Atlantis, and thus, has wings that grow out of his back. Van is constantly followed around by his childhood friend Merle. He is a good sword fighter, after all he was taught by the best there is. His kingdom was destroyed at the beginning of the anime, but he begins to rebuild Fanelia at the very end of the series. This cute angel is also in love with Hitomi, though their developing relationship goes through many problems before the series is over. His voice is done by the great and almighty (alright, not quite...) Seki Tomokazu.
