The Real Thang!
The dangers of sunbathing are no mystery but the temptation to cook yourself all day is still hard to overcome. If you are intending to take on the beach this summer, at least take a few precautions that could save you from more than just a nasty bit of sunburn!
Don't go out in the sun at all between the hours of 11am and 3pm if you can help it, this is when the sun is at it's strongest. If you do go out, you must wear a sun hat.
Use a high SPF sun cream, at least 20 is a good guide, and make sure it has both UVA and UVB filters.
Build up your exposure to the sun gradually. Skin that's been covered up all year is at it's most vulnerable in the sun.
Make sure to keep applying sunscreen at least once every hour and after every time you go for a dip in the pool or the sea.
Pay special attention to your nose, cheeks, forehead, ears, neck and shoulders when you're putting on your sunscreen - these are the first areas that get burnt. Remember to do your eyelids and feet too, they are easily forgotten about but very painful if burnt.
Wear good quality sunglasses with UVA and UVB filters to protect your eyes.
If you do start to burn, get out of the sun immediately. Once the damage is done it won't matter how much sun-block you put on.
