In his speech upon receiving the Nobel-Prize, William Faulkner talked bout the relationship between writings and human spirit. He believed that good literary works should give support to people by lifting up their human spirit.

William Faulkner thought there was already too much fears exist in the world that “we can even bear it”. There fears prevented people from doing what they wanted to do. Literature is to let people find their hopes and dream, not depress them even more. People would not choose to come back to real life if they did not see any hope but fear.

Another reason that literature should lift up the human spirit is to help reveal the truth of it. The human spirit is full of “love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice”. Those things should not die out until the last man died. They are being forgotten by humans. Writings should remind people about these basic truths buried in the very deep of their hearts.

Human is “immortal”, because he “refuse to accept the end of man”. Literature should be “immortal”, too. William Faulkner believed writing should be an “inexhaulstible voice”, to help people “endure and prevail”. writers keeps writing to give encouragement until he/she dies. Theri writings help to keep the human spirits alive.
