Information: With a need for effective fire support units, the Federation designed the RGM-79FS GM Fire Support Type. The heavy 220mm Chain-Fed Machinegun was one of the biggest rapid-fire weapons ever equipped on any Mobile Suit, and did considerable damage in battle. The downside was that this large bore machinegun slowed the GM down quite a bit, and prevented it from carrying any other optional weapons. Another problem that arose was its poor close combat abilities, although since it was designed to be a fire support unit it was usually assigned to attack from the rear lines or from a secured position. This unit is especially effective as a defensive unit, usually firing from a trench or other types of cover, which it did in the Panama Incursion. A group of 5 managed to cover the airfield at an E.F.F. base in Panama when it was attacked by 4 MS-07F Gouf Fire-Starters. After loosing the base in a surprise attack, the GM Fire Support Types were deployed to defend the airfield until the C-88 Medias could take off.
