. Review

This latest addition to the Resident Evil series is the first of the series I've played and I quite enjoyed it. For a virus/zombie horror game it stuck pretty well to the genre without sinking too much into cliche. But I WASN'T SCARED. it only made me jump once, or maybe twice.
The story basically goes: Our hero, the dashing Leon is a miscellaneous US government agent who's been sent into a village of conspirators to rescue the President's daughter Ashley. Leon's been sent with only a handgun, a bottle of first aid nasal spray, and a walkie talkie with which he communicates with Hunnigan in MGS style transmissions. Hunnigan doesnt really help much, and Leon doesnt have any of the heavy artillery or Special Ops teams for back-up that anyone with half a brain would use for such a mission. So, its up to you to guide Leon through the hoardes of infected villagers to rescue Ashley, the mostly useless, and somewhat short skirted run of the mill First Daughter in distress. Well thats the jist of it anyway.

The gameplay in Resi 4 is different to most FPS games, and the controls are a bit fiddly at first. You hold down the R1 button to ready your weapon, and the left analog stick to aim it (rather than the usual Right analog stick) and the X button to fire. This means that despite Leons secret agent prowess, he cant aim or fire a weapon and walk at the same time. another annoying thing is that he cant run at all, he walks agonisingly slowly through the whole game. the only other point about controls etc, is the occasional God Of War style button mashing to duck, dodge, hack, slash, sprint, swim, or turn. In general the puzzles are pretty simple and the bosses are mildly challenging, but can be beaten after a couple of tries. And the controls you'll get used to, it took me a while to get the hang of GTA again afterwards.

The graphics are pretty good, nice and gory, and no blocks or glitches to be seen. Lifespan- its hard to tell. I didnt complete it in the 3 day rental, and I dont know how close I was. I'm up to chapter 4-4. I've a feeling there are some bonus levels as well after you complete the game, so it should last you at least a week (if you buy it from EB, they'll give you a refund within a week, no questions asked). No multilayer though, or extra modes that I can see, apart from a shooting gallery minigame within the story mode. But a pretty engrossing story mode anyway.
So overall: 3 and a half Chainsaw severed heads out of 5.
