February 2004

Hee hee...like the weird color? It's better than pink anyways, for February...^_~

02.27.04, Friday:

[11:26pm] I went to watch Passion with Ros today! I'm not a big crier of movies (Okay, perhaps there are some exceptions. =) I never cried for Titanic...it was putting me to sleep...but Fox and the Hound? Pokemon??? How could one resist those big gleaming eyes??? Hee hee...^_^), but I did cry a little for this one...not bawling...just that it pulled your emotions. My muscles got tense, I winced and closed my eyes at parts, and was hating all the "bad guys" in the movie...and yet...we are all those bad guys...we deny Him and nail Him to the cross all the time, because we just suck like that. We're so unworthy...and all that is STILL a movie...He was real and went through all that, and then some. Woah - He must really love us eh? I mean, we've done nothing to receive this incredible, unconditional love...and yet, there it is, waiting for us to accept and return it...We don't owe Him enough...

I saw a movie trailer of something I want to see! Two Brothers. Check it out. =)

02.24.04, Tuesday:

[09:46pm] Okay, so more retreat details: During Saturday's first message after breakfast, Ralm had said that "God will stop the rain in time for Devotions"...and guess what??? He did! ^_^ It didn't rain once after that, until late at night when we were sleeping. So Saturday, we got to eat, play games, go hiking, and visit the Borax Museum at Furnace Creek (where we were staying at). =) God brought us a double rainbow too! ^_^ We ended our campfire with Chubby Bunny, S'mores, and worship. On Sunday, after milk and cereal for breakfast (I have that "Milk and Cereal" song stuck in my head now, heh heh...), and after our last message, we packed up all the muddy tents, and took off down the scenic route, visiting Artist's Drive and Artist's Palette, where we all got to run around up the hills and down the hills of God's big playground. =) It was fun...and funny too, seeing a whole group of us attack and run up and down the hills of Death Valley, hee hee...^_^ We also visited Badwater, the lowest point in all of North America. I saw some places that we didn't stop at either, like the Devil's Golf Course (it was closed), the Natural Bridge, and Dante's View. If I go again, I'd like to see those spots. =)

The drive back was cool - not only were Anna, Jonathan, Nina and Amy constantly entertaining to, well, us, of course, but we got to drive through clouds, and see many cool places that I would have stopped at if I was leading the caravan. =) There were these one big hills/rocks that looked like a building...there was another big rock that jutted out from the grassy earth, and it even had this cave in it! The scenery there was really beautiful...it's always amazing to see nature proclaim His love for us in such a way. Isn't artwork a window to one's soul? A glimpse of who its Creator really is? ^_^

We stopped in Baker to eat a late lunch, as the traffic was piled for some kinda accident. After that, we all went home, dropping off people here and there. There was some intense rain and fog - a scary combination. =P But other than that, He got us all home safely. =)

I was really thinking about getting a sub on Monday. I went to school on Monday, looked at the sub report, and stayed...pretty much to lecture my 7th graders. They were really, really bad. I was surprised at my 6th period, who is usually really great for subs - there was also some kind of fight in there between two kids, and one got suspended for hitting the other. I might have a sub next Monday, because of Jury Duty...so I'm hoping that if I AM out, that the kids learned from this time, and will behave! =)

Tonight, we had our Star Party, where the Riverside Astronomical Society came to our school to show us some neat stuff up in the sky. =) Unfortunately, I heard that one of the teachers told the kids that the Star Party was cancelled - when, HEY, I'm the teacher coordinating this, and the only teacher that had any contact with the astronomers! So I'm wondering what happened, and why he said that...he can't cancel things if he didn't at least ask me. As a result, and bunch of kids were confused, and some asked me way after school about it, and I had to tell them that it wasn't cancelled, and that we were still doing it, despite our fears of rain/clouds. At least I had told my kids that if it was raining or that they couldn't see anything in the sky, to not come, and if anything else, then we'd still have it because the astronomers were coming either way. Anyways, it was a nice night - we saw Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Orion Nebula, and the Moon, as well as some constellations. =) It did get cloudy, but only towards the end, so we arranged for another one in a month. =)

02.23.04, Monday:

[07:32pm] Went to teach. Busy. Came home, did some cleaning, laundry...now I'm grading. Kinda. I uploaded the winter retreat photos from my digicam, hee hee...you can see them here! ^_^ It's free to sign up, so no worries...just put in a junk email addy if you're worried about spam. That's what I did anyways. =)

02.22.04, Sunday:

[09:35pm] What an awesome weekend...full of adventure, scary things, and fun! ^_^ When I went to pick up Ninien, it had started to rain...by the time we got to Anna and Jonathan's, it was pretty clear that the day would be rainy...we figured this out while sitting on the I-15 for several hours, moving no more than 20 - 25 mph. =Þ The night got darker and rainier...which wasn't any fun in traffic, and not much more fun when the traffic got lighter, because it was too scary to drive fast! Heh heh...when we finally got off the 15 freeway to get on the 247, we all cheered like mad...only to find that the 247 is a long, dark, scary stretch of road! In a nutshell, we almost ran over a fox, 3 mice (kangaroo rats, I think)...and a paper cup. =) The first fox and kangaroo rat both had just stopped in their tracks in the middle of the road and stared at our headlights for the longest time! With the fox, we didn't see it, as we were going up a tiny hill/bump, and saw it only as we were coming down the bump - I skidded a little, not only because of the surprise of seeing it there, and the desire to not hit it, but more because Jonathan and Anna screamed from the top of their lungs in the back of car, heh heh...fortunately, the fox ran away after our car stopped. The rat, on the other hand, didn't leave. It was just THERE. So I had to swerve the car so that it was between the car tires, and not under it, heh heh. The other rats were smarter - they didn't stare. They just kept running. =) We arrived in Death Valley in the rain, complete with mud. At least we got to roast hot dogs for a late late dinner (breakfast??? It was nigh midnight, heh heh...) - it took a good five hours to get there. I didn't know it was so far!

Night time out there is completely dark. No stars, because of the rain clouds, and well, no light of course...other than our own. While sleeping, I awakened to hear the scariest noise. My first thought was that it was hyenas, hee hee...but then I remembered...there ain't none in Death Valley! Wolves? No...it didn't sound like it all. Then I figured out that they were coyotes. They had us surrounded, literally - each cry from one to its pack, and the pack back to another - it all came from around our campsite. We had stored away the breads, but yeah...it was scary...I've never heard a coyote call until this weekend, and it's creepy! But Ralm stepped out of the cabin, shone his flashlight around, and they were gone, and stopped calling out after that. I heard later on that they are timid and scared of us...so it wasn't so bad the second night at all. But their cry is still eerie to hear.

Saturday started out with rain - Ninien went back to Riverside with Pauline and Sakonh (who were there to drop off Amy), and Fred had arrived sometime in the middle of the night. And the rest...I will blog about later...as well as put up some good pictures...all later this week...because I have to sleep, in order to teach tomorrow. =) I was really considering getting a sub...but I don't like getting subs...I already had one on Friday, and I'm already going to be out next Monday because of that Jury Duty thing. =P So teach I will, tomorrow...

02.20.04, Friday:

[09:15am] I have yet to pack...but at least everything else is about done! ^_^ Last night, my bro and I went to get food at Costco...it was hilarious...! We had TWO carts...one shopping cart, completely filled, and another one of those giant orange pushcart things filled. I arrived to  the checkout first, so they thought that was it...but nope...then came my bro...they were like, "Wow, you guys aren't messing around tonight!" Hopefully, it will be enough food for all of us. it's enough to pack my car with the middle seats down anyways, hee hee...Praise God - 27 campers! Wow! ^_^

Okay...off to make some brunch...and then pack and stuff. =) Till Monday! ^_^

02.18.04, Wednesday:

[05:41pm] Ack. It's been mad-karazy-busy out here! The past couple of nights have been full of grading, topped with retreat preparations. To think that there are mainly two of us planning it all out (with some great help here and there! ^_^)...dang, it's a lot of work. This was the reason why it was going to be cancelled this year, because nobody really steps up to do the work - registration, paperwork, paying for things, arranging activities, small groups, etc...We have help this year with music, which is really helpful, and offers of help here and there, but few are willing to meet up and make it happen. So, because my bro and I see each other all the time...and usually lead these things...who else is doing it? I'm not grumbling at all, really, hee hee...It's a lot of work, but I don't think my bro nor I actually mind. However, it'd be really helpful if more from the group stepped up to do this or that. I'm not complaining about anyone right now either. I think I'm just stating things that are in my head. ^_^

That extends to our church too. The same people tend to be the ones to step up - how many years have the Ed's (Ed Lu, Ed Ng) been vice-chair for GB, because no one else wants to spend the time nor energy doing it? How many of the current GB members have served before? I guess it's bound to happen in a small church, but it doesn't have to, you know? (Again, not complaining, just stating. ^_^ I like my church. ^_^) And when someone tries to pass the buck, no one is willing to take that opportunity to serve, and thus, that person's pretty much "stuck" with it. People are willing to help, but not take the full responsibility of it. And it's not just GB of course, but serving in all the other ways that people do serve there. It's nice to know that most everyone actually does do something for the church, and serve in their own way - from voluntary janitorial duties, to bringing flowers on Sundays, to VBS, to simply fellowship with others. Yep. =)

On to another night of massive double-duty working, hee hee...^_^ Alas...no hip hop for me tonight...>_<

02.16.04, Monday:

[09:23pm] A lovely day off! ^_^ I did work, of course, but also finished with lots of free time left for the day. Shelton and I cooked dinner for my parents, and we made that potato pancake thing ("Potatoes and Onion Tortillas"...but it's more like a eggy pancakey type thing...). Yummmm. I really like it...! And surprisingly, so did everyone else! ^_^ Actually, that was all I cooked. Shelton cooked the rest of dinner, because I went to meet up with Giang and John for dinner at TGIF, so thanks Shelton! ^_^

Though we missed hip hop, because the food took a while to get to us, it was still fun to hang out! They also gave us a really yummy ice cream cookie-sandwich sundae for John's bday, accompanied with the traditional song - but they would shout his name out really loud, which was funny. =) Wednesday though, Giang might come hip hop with me, heh heh...

Sunday was dandy...Church...and then the Agape Feast right after...there was a new girl, Ninien, and she might go to camp with us!...Kathleen is back from HK, yay!...we took Anna and Jonathan home from lunch, and it was neat getting to know these two karazy kids better...and then we had CCF at Gilbert's, where I think I was a little cranky (and if DVD reads this, which I doubt, but just in case...Sorry for being cranky...!) because I had had enough of mean criticisms from the day, from my never-satisfied mom. Sigh.

But Ducky just shared that she cares, hee hee. Like when I dropped my soap yesterday in the shower. Even my brother stopped what he was doing to wait and hear if there were more noises after that, to know if I was okay. Actually, EVERYONE stopped for a second. Wow. =)

02.14.04, Saturday:

[07:52pm] Happy Valentine's Day! =)

There was this really good article, by Mitch Albom (who is now one of my favorite authors, hee hee...). The closest thing I can find online to it is an excerpt on this bulletin board. So here it is. Read and enjoy...the real thing, I have clipped out at home. I shall need to save it somehow. It's really nice (this excerpt is good too, but the full article is much nicer). =)

I had a fun yesterday and today out in the West LA area! In short - I went to Lorie's, had Indian food (with some EXTRA spicy lamb/peppercorn thing. I DO mean out-of-this-world-hot, too!) with her and her friends, stayed up to play...woke up, and we cooked Potatoes and Onion Tortillas (filled with ham and cheese, hee hee)...watched TV...ate junk food...went to the Grove and the LA's Farmer's Market, where we did a lot of window shopping, and got chocolate caramel apples! In short, I had fun fun fun hanging out with my friend Lorie, who would not allow me to do any schoolwork. ^_^ The weather was lovely, and us two single girls had a lovely Valentine's Day anyways - so you don't have to be hooked up to have fun today, hee hee! =)

I got home a few hours ago, had a yummy dinner...but am feeling rather tired, heh heh...buuut tonight, the guys want to go head over to Ralm's to watch movies, so off I'll go...but I'll bring my grading to do, cuz I really should get started on it (or else I'll feel really guilty!).

02.13.04, Friday:

[05:32pm] Friday the 13th...it ain't superstition...it must be true...and today, I am victim! Heh heh...okay, maybe not...but a bunch of bad things happened today. =( I went to school, early and happy...Stickley, one of the history teachers that drives this Jaguar, comes into my class before the bell rings to tell me that somebody completely dented my car up. I was like, HUHHH? I was just there 20 minutes ago, and it looked fine...! So I went to check it out. It wasn't dented, but it was kinda marked. Like someone opened up their door on my car (he had parked next to me and saw it; however, he says it wasn't him. Hmm. Nah, it wasn't him - the mark was up higher, so it wasn't his.) pretty hard and left a nice little line for me. Most of it came off, and there's still some marks on it, but I think in time, they will go away. I hope. =( It's just a car, and it's bound to happen sometime, but at the same time, I like my car to be happy too...

During zero period, I get a phone call as I'm taking my kids out to the volleyball game - the buses for a field trip I had cancelled (Whale Watching. No administration support for funding it, so we cancelled it) came anyways! I couldn't find documentation of when I called them and who I talked to...but I'm certain I called, as I cancelled the buses, docents, boat, and everything at the same time...but hey, I honestly could have forgotten, making all those calls at once...and since there's no record, it's as good as if I didn't do it. So they're charging the school for them anyways...and I feel real bad about it. I should have written it down, but I didn't - I just did some phone calls...and yeah...so I felt crummy after that. =(

But it ain't over yet. I forgot to get a packet of make-up work for this one kid. I'm usually really good on this, but nope. Forgot this time.

And then I realized later on that I completely forgot about the School Site Council meeting this morning. The same one where last night, I was saying I'd bring hot chocolate for a few others, and even call Heidi so that she wouldn't forget (again).

On the other hand, my students completely cheered me up. This girl that hated my guts yesterday (for taking her letter away, and for her finding out she only got a 2 on her essay, when she's normally a good writer. I explained her score after class yesterday, and she understood it cuz she made a major error in it, but she still wasn't happy and stomped off) decided to not hate me anymore. The classes were hyper with candy all over the place, but they did a good job. My 4th period cheered me up more, getting me on the "Chocolate Chip" thing (one kid said Chocolate and I said Chip without thinking...and I was the only one who did it. The kids got a kick out of that, hee hee...), and bringing up that I could break dance, and that some of them saw me last year on the dance floor. Plus, it was this one kid's birthday, and she had been anticipating it all week long, so today was like "her" day (spurts of "Happy Birthday" broke out at random times). It's funny - 4th period CAN do all this side talking and still do their work really well, so it all went smoothly and fun at the same time. And I was showered with candy and chocolate by my students everywhere. So it was a nice day teaching, despite everything that could have gone wrong.

I still left school as soon as I could though, heh heh...I wasn't going to risk any chance of anything ELSE going wrong. >_<

I'm off to play for tonight! Till latas! ^_^

02.12.04, Thursday:

[09:33pm] Valentine's Day is coming up, and Helzberg Diamonds hasn't sent me those "I Am Loved" pins yet! Maybe I'll get it tomorrow at school. Or maybe I can give to my students as an After-Valentine's-Day gift? ^_^ Speaking of Valentine's Day, I might be too busy to blog then. Ha ha...no, I don't have a hot date, hee hee...I'm going to be hanging out with Lorie! ^_^ So, before the bandwidth to that site gets all plugged up on Saturday, here's Shao Bing for all of you! ^_^

I went to Walmart today after work to pick up some promised 7-Up, juice, and graham crackers for my 6th period. It's their prize for successfully doing the "Heads Up! 7-Up!" routine well. Basically, when we do independent work and I need their attention and for them to stop talking, I say "Heads Up!" and they reply "7-Up!" and must be absolutely quiet. Any class that does it really well for a week can be rewarded. Actually, I only do this with my two 7th grade classes. With the 8th graders, I actually don't have to, as they listen pretty well (well...my 2nd period...hmm...actually, they've been WAY better since after break, for some mysterious reason. It's cool. =)), though for fun, in one class, I'll say "Chocolate!" and they'll say "Chip!". Maybe I'll bring them chocolate chips some other time, ha ha...but anyways, yeah, Walmart. It was crowded. And then I realized again, Valentine's Day. Wow, it's such a big deal! The marketing is insane, and there's red everywhere. I remember those heart candies, with sayings like "Will you be mine?" or "Sweetie" or something on those - I never liked those candies...they didn't taste that good at all. =Þ I DO remember festivities in elementary school - that was fun - getting to pass out cards and candy, and getting them in return. It's nice to teach kids to share and give to others. Sometimes, I think the world needs to remember that...

Anyways, I just would like those "I Am Loved" pins to give away, hee hee. ^_^

Wow, I think I can sleep early tonight...! I must take advantage of such an opportunity...or knowing me, I won't end up sleeping anytime TOO soon. I might go read my book...or I might lesson plan like the nerd I am, since I've got plans to play this weekend, heh heh...

02.10.04, Tuesday:

[08:54pm] My principal came in to observe my classroom today, and it ended with him saying really good things about what he saw, plus a handshake, hee hee...however, he didn't look happy - he looked really grumpy about something from before he came in. He also mentioned that he would like my room to be a regular "visitation classroom" next year for our visitors (in case I haven't mentioned it already, we get a lot of them, heh heh)...which implies to me that he will still be here next year. My mom still says I should apply to CNUSD, simply because it's closer - I'm still unsure about this, because...what if my principal gets WORSE next year, despite recent changes, which I think are quite likely short term? I've been praying about what to do, so we'll see what the Big Guy has got planned for me. =)

I drank some of that Chinese bird nest drink today. It's swallow spit - I guess it's gross when you think about it, but like I never knew what it was until after a long time of me drinking it. It's sweety and yummy, hee hee...but I guess the idea is kinda gross. Like some of the insect foods here...the thought of sucking on beetles sends shivers down my back...like a fat kid loves cake...and eww...the cake imagery didn't help overcome the beetle imagery. =Þ

I've finished one class of essays. 2 more to go...

02.09.04, Monday:

[10:30am] Day off! Yay! =) It wasn't completely relaxing though - I woke up around 7, and then went up and around Corona to do errands for my parents and me - went to the Post Office, BofA, Walmart, and the Pharmacy...hee hee...But I did make myself another yummy toasted sandwich at home when I got back. =) I'm supposed to be lesson planning right now...but am taking a...um...break...^_^

02.08.04, Sunday:

[11:50pm] I took a nice nap in the afternoon...so I ain't the least bit sleepy yet, hee hee...=) I'm up working on things for retreat. WOW! We have 25 going so far...! It's awesome! =) But that means that we better have some good stuff planned...so Mark, Shelton and I sat down today to brainstorm...and it's neat...we have a lot of fun things figured out! =)

02.07.04, Saturday:

[04:30pm] Traffic School is fun! ^_^ If anyone needs to go...I have a $3 coupon for Cheap School, hee hee...^_^ I highly recommend it. We even got out 30 minutes earlier. I got a 100% on my test, hee hee. And the guy said we were the funniest and best class ever. =) (It's nice to be on the other end of the class every now and then, heh heh...)

02.06.04, Friday:

[06:22am] Arg, woke up...sneezing...! It was a weird way to wake up, hee hee...^_^

02.04.04, Wednesday:

[10:13pm] Done with grading!

02.03.04, Tuesday:

[06:03pm] Hmm. I just remembered...it's a new month...I will archive January blogs soon...As for now...

02.02.04, Monday:

[10:50pm] Rain! Rain is lovely! ^_^

My right leg is DEFINITELY shorter than my left leg. It always happens that my right pant legs of whatever I have is the one that gets scruffed up the most. I noticed this during hip hop today, heh heh. It happens to every one of my pants - the ones that are't hemmed anyways. And for those of you who know I have a funny extra line on my left ring finger (palm side)...well, that's just another genetic mutation. What's funny is one of my 7th graders actually has the same thing...on the same finger! So this must be a SPECIAL trait...hee hee...^_^

We humans are so dang imperfect...no wonder we KNOW that there must be Something bigger and better than all of us! ^_^

[06:25pm] I taught my kids about Groundhog Day today...perfect, as we had already talked about the seasons, solstices, and equinoxes. =) It was cloudy, and there is talk of rain too. That must mean the rest of winter will be somewhat moderate...not that our winters are really ever THAT extreme here in SoCal. =P
