August 2004
08.31.04, Tuesday:
[06:24am] I know...long time no see...! ^_^ In a nutshell:
Wednesday, August 25 - Happy Birthday Kevin Ng! ^_^
Thursday, August 26 - Went out to Fullerton to get my toes and nails done with Rosalyn, for my bday present! Neato huh? Thanks girlie! =) Only by now, my fingernails are about gone...but the toes last! That's why pedicures are so much nicer, muah ha ha...^_^ Then I dashed home and back to her place - my bro locked himself outside, ha ha...^_^...Rosalyn got her hair cut and layered (it looks lovely!), and then we got dressed up and went to the An-o-nym-ity movie premiere in downtown Pasadena. It was fun! I got to collect tickets at the door and get photos up in the lobby of the theater (using the heel of my shoe as a hammer!) before everything started. We were joined by Takako, Yvonne, Mike, Gundy, and John! ^_^ We ate appetizers (mmm...the hot wings were good!) and played pool at the afterparty, and then got more food at Hurry Curry, hee hee. ^_^ The name of that place reminds me of that rhyme Maria mentioned before - something about "Hurry, hurry, hurry...eat your rice and curry..." ^_^
Friday, August 27 - My bday! ^_^ Went to get my TB skin test analyzed (I'm negative!), went to my school again and was visited by a former student, and then dinner with family at Capital. We were going to go to Kingswood (teppanyaki and shabu shabu), but my mom didn't want to go there. Instead, she promised me it for winter time, because she says it's "winter" food, hee hee...=) Either way, I got my tofu. =)
Saturday, August 28 - Shelton treated me to sushi for my bday, ha ha...no no...I'm not liking raw fish much still. But crunchy things, I like. They had no tempura, but this shrimp crunch roll was mighty impressive. =) Then MSG drove on down to Diamond Bar to play basketball with David and Josiah, only I just sat nearby to get more schoolwork done, heh heh...then it was off to the birthday "extravaganza" for DVD and I, hee hee. =) Banana Bay food + Karaoke afterwards. Fun fun fun! Thanks for all that came, and for Gilbert, who organizes it every year, hee hee...! ^_^
Sunday, August 29 - My goodness. Meetings at church till 3pm. What else is there to say? =) Plus I made a decision about something important, and though still a little timid about it, I'm sure God will take care of it all. =) My cousins and uncle also came back from HK, and brought me the new Jay Chou CD, hee hee. =)
Monday, August 30 - Dropped into school, do a bit of work, helped the new science teacher get oriented (Isn't this the department head's job??? How come I end up doing this for every new 8th grade teacher? I must be good, ha ha, only LD won't admit it! J/k j/k! I was asked by Conway, not LD, so...who knows what that means? =P), and then went to a Pre-book club meeting at Sheila's lovely place, where all us book clubbers got to catch up on what happened over the summer and eat fresh BBQ'd burgers, good spinach dip with chips, deviled eggs and mochi ice cream. =) Heidi also brought me back a Cakelove t-shirt from Washington DC. Yay!!! And thanks! ^_^
Today? Official first day back for teachers!
08.24.04, Tuesday:
[04:36pm] Spent all day at school, fixin' up my classroom...walking back on campus and seeing wonderful people like Melissa, George and Sharon made me happy to be back, hee hee. =) Lynda was walkin' around, sportin' a "Whiskey Girl" rhinestone t-shirt (it's a song, by the way, from a concert she went to last night), hee hee, and of course, that made the homecoming back to school fun, fun, fun. ^_^ I'm almost done with my classroom...just need to put up the bulletin boards and posters tomorrow, and run off copies...which will take all of tomorrow and possibly a bit on another day for the copies...and then I'm done! ^_^
My lack of presence on AIM and email only means one thing - school time is coming upon me! So expect less of me...but do keep in touch all the same...I'll need to keep some contact with the outside world once I start in my little school-bubble. =P
Rosalyn and I went to the San Diego Zoo yesterday! Muah ha ha...it was so much fun...and we saw so many different kinds of animals. =) Of couuuuurse I finally got to see Panda Bears! ^_^ Though I think I like Red Pandas more...they're much more active and animated than the Giant Pandas. We did see Mei Sheng, the one year old baby panda, nappin' in a tree. =) I have pictures, and will upload soon - though Ros has more, as I ran out of batteries. =̃ After visiting all of the zoo, we still had some more time, so we drove on down to Tijuana, Mexico. Crossed the border (literally, a big wall marked the border. I would imagine it to be something like the Berlin Wall, only made of different material. It's so funny how just one line on the Earth separates two different worlds eh?), meandered at the vendor shops near the border and bargained for some goods, hee hee. Ooo...how I love bargaining again...and this time, in Spanish! I think after China, I'm much more confident about using a foreign language, even Spanish, and I surprised myself at the level I used in speaking it - the speed, confidence, and flow of the language was much better than before. Yay! =) We didn't stay long, as we were hungry, and wanted to be back before it got dark, so we went to get dinner at Seaport Village. We never got there though, hee hee...and instead, had dinner elsewhere in San Diego, at Niban Japanese Restaurant, indulging in some soup noodles, a crunch roll, a soft-shell crab roll (which had those little orange eggs in it. Ick. But you couldn't taste it because everything else was crunchy, so...yeah...), and a potato patty. =) By the time I finally got home, I was pooped, and so was the gas tank of my little car, heh heh...
08.22.04, Sunday:
[09:55pm] It's been a few busy days...but filled with lots of fun and excitement! ^_^ Wednesday afternoon, I picked up Tiffany, where we came back here to cook dinner (in which she made perfect rice!) for my parents, and then went off to hip hop! =) She's off in Hawaii right now - have fun fun fun! ^_~
Thursday was the start of the Professional Learning Communities conference, which lasted until Saturday, at RCC. It was alright - because our school has already been doing PLC for a while, it didn't offer anything too new. While the speakers and breakout sessions had good points that would criticize flaws of the "old-style traditional teaching", none of them really offered solutions at all. Ironically, it's a lot like the PLC at our school, where they talk a lot about doing this or that, but little of it is actually implemented successfully. Not to be putting down what we have done though - some of the things we've done have good reason and research behind it. However, I don't think that we followed through with it most of the time. I did get a few good ideas here and there, and will be using them for my classroom this year, but they weren't anything TOO related to PLC stuff. Just good ol' classroom strategies that someone would say here and there.
Thursday night, dinner with Kathleen (won ton noodles!) and Friday night, dinner at Elephant Bar. =) The food wasn't as good as I expected, though the Creme Brulee was rather creamy and tasty! Mmmm...=) Saturday included more food with a yummy dinner at the Wang's, where we also watched the Breaking News movie. Aw...it didn't live up to its hype...=(
Today, we led worship and ended Sunday with kayaking in Huntington. 'Twas fun! =) Besides a lot of self-tipping (Jonathan, Luman, Anna!) and racing, all of these 19 people seemed to have a whole lot of fun paddling and splashing about for a few hours, hee hee...We ended with a traditional JiTB dinner and the drivers (thanks all!) drove a bunch of sleepyheads home. It was great! ^_^
08.18.04, Wednesday:
[01:10pm] There is nothing...nothing...like fresh fried rice...^_^ Especially after a long morning cleaning up and moving furniture in my classroom. I was just going to drop off stuff, but then decided to move things around, since I didn't have any plans for the time being, right? I saw a cockroach, and it got away...but then when I saw it again, I instantly jumped up with my broom like one of those craze-eyed cats about to pounce on a rubber mouse and smacked that cockroach (the cockroaches in my classroom are big. At LEAST 2 inches long and about an inch wide!) straight across the room toward the door. Then I ran over there and chased it out of my room, to a place far, far away. I told it to not come back! ^_^
I've gotten brave with these scurrying cockroaches. As long as I have a broom. =) At least there never are those big and hairy spiders (not really tarantulas. Smaller than them, I mean. Though I don't find tarantulas amusing at all.) in my classroom. Spiders can be quicker than a cockroach, AND they climb up things all the time!
Oh! Yesterday, I got to hang out with Giang at her place in Loma Linda Med. Neato. =) We made stained glass art (okay, so it was plastic - one of those kiddie crafts things, but it was still really really fun! ^_^), had Hawaiian BBQ for dinner, watched all kinds of TV, and hung out. She let me pick from a bunch of neat black and white photograph/postcards - I love them! I got this neat one of the Chinatown area (she went to San Francisco recently) and framed it. I also hung up a little lantern she gave me...because some of you know how I like things that hang, like those paper lanterns (that my bro calls a fire hazard), hee hee...^_^
08.16.04, Monday:
[11:55pm] Went to play with Lorie down at her place today! =) Jack In The Box lunch...watching Heartbreakers...shopping at Target (I love how Target is so colorful! I should try to consciously avoid Wal-Mart now, and head for Target instead, even if it IS further away...so I won't walk there...^_^)...grocery shopping and making our own Rotel Chile Mac 'n Cheese dinner...eating lychee and mangoes...and completely chillin'. =) Now WHY does she live so dang far away??? Hee hee...^_^
[07:41am] Thomas is doing great leading Praise for this quarter, hee hee...our set for next Sunday includes more people singing, as well as violins even, courtesy of Lauren and Chris. =) Pret-ty neat. =) Tiffany is back from Taiwan too, and she got me this cool bracelet (purple, of course!) and the neatest little satchel! Thanks girlie! ^_^
After church, I frantically finished up making some desserts and hauled them to Belinda and Stan's Farewell Party! Actually, I dropped off the gear and toured the Treanor's place, which is absolutely fun! It's got walls of all kinds of colors inside, lots of clocks and lamps and fun stuff...you all know how much I like this stuff...^_^ Then I picked up Crystal, and we chilled at Starbucks for some time. I didn't want any coffee, but I DID find a new fizzy drink that instantly became a favorite! ^_^ I saw this bottle of Sparkling Grapefruit - I looove grapefruit juice, and even though I had some doubts about it being carbonated, it was still incredibly tasty! I love it! So I saved the bottle, and am telling you all how yummy this IZZE drink is. If you've never had it...try it! =)
It was fun to relax and hang out with Crystal! ^_^ I haven't seen her in forever, and wow! She's starting 3rd year in college now! I feel so old...I met her back when she was in high school...and like at church, Vanessa and I were talking about when she was in my kindergarten Sunday School back in da' days, and now here she is, 16 and driving! O_o
Afterwards, I went to the party. Mmm. There was such good food there! I was in heaven - bbq grilled chicken wings! ^_^ And there was this funny type of meatball that was really really splendid! ^_^ Farewell to three wonderful people - Sally, Belinda, and Stan! But don't worry...Hawaii is on my list of places to go...so I'm comin' one of these days! ^_^
08.14.04, Saturday:
[11:44pm] I feel like a murderer...I just euthanized my fish...=( There wasn't anything else I could do for it, and it was clearly suffering. I even came home today to see it completely front-heavy, with the front of its body totally leaning down and its rear end up at more than a 45 degree angle. =( So I filled up a container with cold ice water and lots of ice...and dropped it in...it didn't last long. It took me a while to get the guts to do it. And even harder to get the fish out of the container. =P The whole time, my brother's like - pop it! And other cruel suggestions. =P Anyways...it lived a good 10 months eh? It still hurts to see my pets dead. Last year, and this year. =(
I did go down to Huntington Beach with Giang and Dinh today to kayak! Awesome fun! My first time paddling - it wasn't AS tiring, but then again, I think I was really slow. =P I liked it - I loved how the harbor area has waterways where we can weave between houses and under bridges and what not. =) Fun fun! =)
Afterwards, we had a fun ramen dinner at some Japanese place (Shen-Shin-Gimu???) where the waiters and cooks cheerfully yelled at customers whenever we went in or out of the place. It made it fun fun fun. =)
08.13.04, Friday:
[11:34pm] Christine Zae Zae visited me today! =) We went to In-N-Out again, hee hee...because...they have no In-N-Out up in Seattle! =) But we had a nice 2 hour late lunch. It's amazing to know that she knew me and used to take care of me when I was just a wee tyke...she's watched me grow up! =)
Tonight, we took my Aunt Rosa, Uncle Simon, and Anthony and Andrew down to LAX - they're off to HK now! =) After all that driving, we stopped off in Westminster for some Chiu Chou noodles - alas, it was closed! We DID see a Lee's Sandwiches open though...ooo...I DO want to try that one day...=) We found a local Pho 54 and at there instead for a late night second dinner. I love how things are still open late down there...! It's part of that Chinesey type late-night snacking that I miss about China. =)
[12:20am] Ooo. This Plain Truth Magazine is too good! I've only read "Glutton Nation" so far...but I want to read the other ones too...courtesy of Shelton! Okay, so I stole it off his site. But I told him I'd steal it. =)
So many good things to read today! The book I'm currently reading, "Holler If You Hear Me" is from Heidi. It's one of those teacher books...and one of those I-can't-put-it-down type of books. =)
I just realized that it's Friday the 13th. It's starting off with good reading - I think it'll be a good Friday the 13th. =)
08.12.04, Thursday:
[09:26am] I've been getting up earlier this week, and when I'm downstairs doing the dishes, it's nice to have the TV on. But I've discovered something this week - I'm addicted to Regis and Kelly, hee hee...^_^ If I DO ever go to New York, I really wouldn't mind going to watch it, muah ha ha...^_^
Oh! And here's something interesting from MSN about consumerism. =) I do remember back in high school, I learned that red and yellow colors make people hungry - thus the reds and yellows in so many fast food places. From McDonald's to Burger King, Del Taco to Wendy's...it's all reds and/or yellows! =)
Commercial break almost over...! ^_^
08.11.04, Wednesday:
[12:13pm] You guys know about my walking fix by now, right? =) So I wanted to go to Wal-Mart today, and decided hey, why not walk??? So I did. It wasn't so bad, but because I didn't think it was TOO far (like a mile, right?), I just put on my flip flops. Big mistake! It was more like 3 miles to just get there, a little under one hour walking one way, and my flip flop straps cut into my feet. They're tired, broken and cut. When I got home about 2 and a half hours later, I immediately nursed my feet by washing them, scrubbing them, and then putting a sample packet of foot lotion that I had from who knows when all over my feet. I'm not moving them right now, and intend to just sit there with the computer for a while. ^_^
ACK! News flash! My right middle toe is cramping this very moment...!!! O_o
Ah. It has passed. Thank you! ^_^
Needless to say, I got enough walking for today. I wish we had some type of wheelchair here, hee hee...^_^ Whenever I think of wheelchair, I still think of that time that Shelley and I found that abandoned wheelchair at Irvine Medical, while waiting for our EMT practical. We had fun with it, and pulled in Dolly and Olive to join in later! =)
*Update: So Heidi replies..."WALMART!!??? The reason that you are miserable now is because you totally messed up your karma by going to WalMart. Evil, evil place!! " She may be right...you DO all know what an evil empire Wal-Mart is, right? Though I can't help but keep going there! Heh heh...must...stop...addiction...^_^
08.10.04, Tuesday:
[11:55pm] Happy Birthday Mimi!!! ^_^ And good luck down in SD...you get to break free!!! ^_~
Dolly and I celebrated with Mimi for her birthday at Cheesecake Factory! Mmm, how I love The Cheesecake Factory! I indulged in the whole wheat bread and butter...the Da Vinci Pasta...and even shared a birthday Lemon Raspberry Cheesecake. =)
While I was meandering about at Fashion Island, I got a call from a friend , and we talked about some stuff that he's going through. Funny how I wanted to talk about my own stuff, because there seems to be a lot of things that are frustrating me, though it wasn't the right time nor person maybe, because he had other concerns on his mind. On the way home, I got to chat with Giang. How I love talking to her - she let me vent, talk my frustrations out, and proposed reasons for why I'm so frustrated, and even thought of solutions to help me out a bit. And likewise, I let her do her talking too. Giang is awesome...Thanks girlie, you don't know how much I needed it! ^_^
Oooo. God answered another prayer! Thank you, Thank you! A few more to go, but see? He can do all sorts of things. Things like finding lost money that wasn't even mine. =)
[08:16am] Yesterday was lovely! I got my walking fix by walking over to the grocery store and buying food (I love grocery shopping, by the way!), and I did some work while sitting outside in my backyard, accompanied with music from my little stereo. It was nice to study outside. =) If any one of you wants to study outside, come here! Free food, music, and well...nice study/work spot. =) Only available during sunlight hours though. =)
Cooked a yummy yummy dinner (I concocted my own idea of using jicama...shredded, stir fried, seasoned and with an egg fried into it makes for a tasty dish. Topped with diced green onions for a fancy presentation. ^_^), hip hopped the night away, practiced my Chinese, made yummy fried rice in the middle of the night for a starving bro and I, and watched Family Guy and Futurama, hee hee...=) I like Family Guy because of that talking baby and dog, hee hee...and though it's strangely funny, I don't watch too much of it (or just plain TV!) in general. So it was a treat. =)
The bird also doesn't object to me quite so much - I take it on daily tours throughout the house, whistle with it, and it loves it when I scratch its head or feed it something yummy (I'm trying not to give it potato chips - oh, how it looooves chips! - as I don't want it to die of a clogged artery and some. It likes fruits too, which is good!). Of course, its feathers doesn't get all puffy and it doesn't croon like mad when I step in the house, like how it behaves when my dad gets home...but at least it's not completely ignoring me anymore. =)
Our garden is in full bloom. We have lots and lots of tomatoes, and the grapes are all looking purple and tasty! Watermelon is growing, growing, growing everywhere, as are the zucchinis and other veggie-melons. =)
My dad showed me where the pigeons are roosting under our roof, and yesterday, for a moment, we were staring at them, and the two were just sitting there, staring back at us. =)
And I'm getting up earlier and earlier! I think it's the sunlight, but it's helping me get up around 7:30ish lately, which is good...I'm working my way back to regular school hours...=P
08.08.04, Sunday:
[11:15pm] I finally, finally got to watch Spiderman 2! Oooo...It was soooo very good!!! My favorite scene??? The whole supportive thing going on at the subway station. In case you haven't seen it, I don't want to spoil it. But I liked that scene a lot. =) Thanks Brian, for coming with me! And eating with me! ^_^ Lorie...I DO owe you a Harry Potter 3 viewing, since I didn't show up at Shark's later, hee hee...^_^
Shelton came back Saturday night too! Yay! ^_^
Did I forget to mention the wonderful thing my dad did??? I have this metal rod that I use to dry clothes in my closet. Anyways, it just lays between the window in my bathroom and the curtain rod, which can be a hassle whenever I take a shower - you have to move it out of the way or else the curtain will knock it down. Just last week, while I was looking up, I knocked it and it fell straight on whatever little nose bridge I have. It felt bruised, but I'm glad it didn't look bruised! ^_^ Anyways, my dad had improved it by adding a few knick-knacks to the ends of the rod so that it lays diagonally, and is held up by some of those sticky plastic hook things. It's hard to describe it, but he did me a huge favor, and saved me from future bruises. =)
I also thought I lost my hoop earrings. I was going to blame Tina for it, ha ha...because she lost her's in China. =) But I found it, amongst my rings. Yay. =) I'm not a big jewelry person. But I doooo like earrings, because they're so fun! And I don't mind necklaces either. I don't think rings and bracelets will work well on me...I like rings, because they're fun, but I hardly wear them! It's almost a waste to have them, but at the same time, they're all kinda fun to play with at times. =)
Almost everything's hunky dory, and I'm about back to my good ol' self...which I'm happy about. =) Except there's a few things going on here and there I feel as if I have no control over, that I wish I could fix or make better or what not...but doesn't every one? So at the moment, I'm just going to be thankful for what God has blessed me with...and leave my worries in His hands...cuz well...what can't He do? ^_^
08.06.04, Friday:
[10:10am] What a lovely day! Off I went to Irvine Regional Park with Yvonne and Rosalyn to hike, fellowship, and see all kinds of cool things. I like the "Lemonade Berry Tree", where if you rub the outside and lick your fingers, it's tangy, like lemonade! However, don't eat it...it's toxic inside. =̃ And we saw the Woodpecker Hotel, a tree that is soooo full of holes (filled with acorns) made by these woodpeckers. And we saw and heard lots and lots of peacocks, heh heh. =) We went back to Ros's and watched "Sweet Home Alabama". It's one of those sappy silly romances, heh heh...
I came home to find some dark Swiss chocolate by my computer! Yes! My mom brought back a bunch from Switzerland in May, but I hadn't had ANY because she was giving them away. I guess my bro opened and ate some, and left half near the computer...on purpose, I think not, as he leaves food in many places. =P But I still had some, and it was tasty! =) My dad also got me a pencil cup that has Chinese characters all over it! So I got to practice more Chinese! Very cool! ^_^
[09:20am] I wake up this morning, and again, see the the toilet seat up in my bathroom. It's been like this since I got back. Is my bro (who I suspect is the one doing this) trying to mark his territory in a bathroom that he gave up to me a long time ago? =) Well then, I mark it back, by leaving the toilet seat down! ^_^
Besides, the bathroom has fake flowers in it. I'm sure he wouldn't ever admit to it. =) I never got paint it like I wanted to...another time, perhaps...or, I can get my own little place to paint eh? ^_^
08.04.04, Wednesday:
[11:52pm] How I looove hip hoppin'...! It's fun to hip hop again after being away from it for a month. =) I walked to the ATM today, and that cured my need to move around here this morning...I was so used to it in Beijing, and here in America, well, we drive! I feel caged almost! I think I'll walk down to where the Vons is another day. It's a little further, but it's quite walkable. I don't know if I'll buy anything - they do have this little artsy-craftsy store, and a hobby store that has fun things to look at. =)
So Heidi sent Book Club a list of possible books she's been eyeing. And they ALL look really intriguing! I want to read them all!!!
Reading Lolita in Tehran

08.03.04, Tuesday:
[01:36am] 'Twas a good day yesterday...things are looking much more fun now, and I'm getting back to gummy-goodness. =) Besides chillin' and running errands and cooking at home, Tiffany and Kevin (USA Kevin. Not the French Kevin. It'd be cool if he DID come over here too though, hee hee...) came over to go with me to hip hop!!! Kevin dropped out midway, hee hee...but Tiff hippity-hopped with me to the end. You go girl!!! ^_^ Afterwards, we played on all those gym machines, and since Kevin signed up, I got me a whole $5 off my monthly membership dues, hee hee...=)
Afterwards, we chilled at JITB and spoke of cachondos and other deep stuff, hee hee...^_~ It was fun though, to simply hang out and not worry about the time and other things, and to just be...well...friends. ^_^ We did come back though, to wake up my bro. ^_^ Anyways, PurpleGirl, have fun in Taiwan...and Kevin, keep working out!!! ^_^
08.02.04, Monday:
[08:56am] Happy Happy Birthday to Shelton! ^_^ Have fun, as you're off in Vegas at the moment, hee hee...^_^
Yesterday, Bill Vaughn spoke at our church. One of the questions he asked during sermon was "What do you think of in terms of church expansion? What do you think God would want to see?" And of course, the answer was a big, big church. But that actually wasn't what I was thinking of, for my answer for both questions. I wasn't thinking of one big church, with split worship services, or split language services or what not, with impersonal relationships, and all members not really knowing each other...Instead, I was thinking of a lot of little churches, churches like ours. All that are loving, like a home filled with people who know and care about each other genuinely, on a personal level. Many little churches that all worship God together as one big Body of Christ, and yet at a level where real personal relationships develop. One big church itself finds it difficult to allow all these real personal relationships to develop - true, there are small groups and what not, but that's what not I'm talking about. It's that whole sense of community that may not be as pervasive when a church is so large that one feels isolated and alienated from the rest.
However, there are problems and flaws with my idea...first of all, I've not been in a big church long enough to know about that whole sense of community, and if they have it as one, so I have no say in that. Another thing is that it's not reality, and this utopia of many small churches that all worship a common Love is nearly impossible in a secular world. Yes, we have many churches now, but not all love and worship God, right?
Personal relationships within a community can allow difficulties to also arise. With human beings being a social creature, there are bound to be social dilemmas. Love, acceptance and forgiveness are critical, but being human, it's not always easy, and distasteful results can linger.
No matter how big or small a community is, there are bound to be moments of isolation and alienation. People will respond to this in different ways, and sometimes, it could negatively affect themselves or others. And yet acceptance and that sense of belonging is so critical. It's kinda like that time at Bla Bla Bar in Beijing, where some songs came on that almost everyone knew, and we all sang it, whether we were sitting downstairs or upstairs, in a corner or out in the middle. Everyone could sing "American Pie" together, and have that sense of togetherness and belonging, no matter where you came from, what you were doing, or why you were there. Everyone longs for and needs that feeling, all the time. It is too bad that sometimes people make choices to find it in the wrong places or in the wrong things. =P
Our church is small. I love it. But the above flaws mentioned are true, and it's happened. =P Pure love, pure acceptance, and pure forgiveness...it's so important for all of us to share that with those around us, because each of us needs it too...
