My Slow Descent Into Loserhood - My Atari Games
BEAMRIDER (Activision)
Rating: 8.5
High Score (so far): 9990
I liked this game from the moment I put it in.  The gameplay was very smooth and the animation was excellent.  But it makes me wonder why the "mother ship" and the asteroids can be so well defined when my ship looks like a resurrection of the brave crew of the S.S. Triangle from Asteroids.  I especially like the "flash" effect (partailly seen below) when an enemy ship is destroyed.
The game starts simple enough, but soon (around level 5 or 6) the action becomes fast and I become furious.  At level seven I am basically winging it and trying to stay alive.  To get a shot at the boss you must press "up" to shoot a torpedo (a fact I didn't know until my third game).  This really racks up the points and is really the only way to get a good score.  I also find it very soothing to yell "take that you stupid bastard!" at the screen when I hit him.  I reccomend a similar mantra.
I have seen some grizzy deaths in Atari games (Jungle Hunt comes to mind), and this game provides a pretty decent one.  The ship splits open (left).  You can just picture pixelated astro-men suffering horribly, corpses floating this way and that from the mangled spacecraft.
(Right): Take that you stupid bastard!!

When playing this game I reccomend the left difficulty switch at "B".  Putting it at "A" starts you at level 8, which can be very dizzying and frightening for the beamrider crew.  You are best to start them in slowly, get some experience, and get their confidence up before sending them out to die for in the name of liberty.

All in all, this is a game worth hunting down.
