| What is a Gully-Raker? |
| This was my C.B.Call Sign during my 4 Wheel Driving trips & is a term used in both Australia & America in country areas to describe a strong wind which "rakes" the Gullys or small Valleys causing damage to Trees, Shrubs & Bushes. It has been used in Country Songs & Poems in both Countrys. I first came upon the term in a "Banjo" Patterson poem titled "Brumbys Run". The Stanza went--- "So, off to scour the mountain side With eager eyes aglow, To strongholds where the wild mobs hide The gully-rakers go." In this context it refers to Cattle & Horse Duffers (Thieves) who "Raked" the Gullys for unbranded Stock, so it also was a Pseudonym for Cattle Thieves in Australia |
