Activities:
Orientation - Read rules and talked about having a fire drill. We made a pretend fire out of colored paper and laminated it. We explain how fire drill works at beginning of camp. During the camp sometime, a leader will put he fire somewhere in the camp site. If a girl is to find the fire, she is to go to the designated alarm and ler everyone know there is a fire. Then we all go to our designated meeting spot. Orientation was as follows:
Weather Gauges - this was a requirement for both the friends of the earth badge and the weather badge. If you would like to know what we made and how we made them, email Guider Barb. We took readings from them twice daily.
Camouflage activity - This went really well. The girls were given potatoes that were painted white. They were going to have to place them in the grass and the leaders were going to have to find them. In order for them to be able to hide properly, they would have to camouflage them. They were allowed to glue on any grass, leaves, twigs etc... as long as it was already on the ground and dead. Then they hid them, (they can't bury them, just place them somewhere) and the leaders had to find them. Our leaders found 5 of the 11 hidden! They were really well done. (One leader went with the girls to place potatoes to make sure they were not buried.)
Un-natural hike - 25 or so un-natural objects were hidden in a big field. The girls had a list and a marker and had 5 - 7 minutes to find as many as they could. When found, they checked them off. We had them go off in pairs. After the time was up, we called them back and counted how many they had found. Prizes for top 3 were wax lips. They loved it. Some ideas for things to hide: book, flashlight, pen, balloon, peper, cup, teddy bear, ball, bely, scissors, thread, key, baseball hat, wig, shoe, fork....
Poems - Another requirement was to make a poem about an endangered animal. We showed them lots of information and pictures on different animals and they had to pick one and write an acrostic poem about it. They did this during freetime.
Sock walk - We were running behind schedule so we didn't get to do this but it is still a great idea. Have the girls bring an old pair of their fathers socks. They put them on over their shoes and walk around a field. Then take off the socks and look at the bottoms, they will be all full with seeds, look at them closely. See if you can figure out what plants they came from.
Oil Spill - This was another requirement for the badge that we ended up doing at a meeting because we were running behind schedule. It is kind of hard to describe. Email Guider Barb for information on it.
