If You Happy With You Need Do Nothing (2001)

The band Alfie are possibly one of the biggest let-downs in the last couple of years. Their debut album 'If You Happy With You Need Do Nothing' was tipped to be a hit, with their acoustic sound matching the quality of rivals such as Kings Of Convenience and Turin Brakes. They had the backing of Twisted Nerve (home of Badly Drawn Boy) who put a lot of effort and money in to Alfie, but Alfie could not reward them in return, they could have been so much better. A major criticism was that they just didn't
try hard enough, whether this accusation is a little harsh, we don't know.

Only one or two songs on their album deserve much praise. The two openers 'Bookends' and 'It's Just About The Weather' are the highlights of the album, mainly because they are the only songs you will listen to, the others will bore you and make you wish you'd never bothered. They must try harder with their next effort, otherwise we may never see them again, probably a good thing.
