The Left and Right Hand Theme The right hand side appears to represent faith in Christianity , turning your back upon evil and the protection from the same. This is represented in stone, with a man guiding and protecting a woman from the adjacent figure of the devil. Turning their backs to it they approach Christianity. What is the devil doing with his left hand? The remaining figures which run up the right side predominantly appear to concern a form of dualism or differing interpretations of scrolls and books.
Left hand side appears to represent evil. One figure shows a knight on horseback, rejecting Christianity or God (opposite to the biblical description of the horse of God) and charging in attack towards a figure of a woman. The woman stands ‘innocently’ holding something to her breast while the ‘spirit’ or fallen angel of evil watches the oncoming attacker. Having laid the snare he holds an open scroll probably indicating that the knights actions are contrary to biblical text. The woman and the knight become victims. What she is holding is not clear although this theme is repeated outside of the chapel. Above the western entrance towards the south side is a statue which shows a woman holding what appears to be a ‘leaf’, or something which resembles parts of the ‘vine’, to her breast with a lamb and a flag at her feet. It is held in such a way that it is obviously some form of ‘precious substance’.
