David Khakhaleishvili is my favorite judoka. In my opinion he is a greatest heavyweight of the 1990's. From 1990 until 1996, David was on top of the +95 kg weight class. However in 1996 in Atlanta, under unfortunate circumstances, the defending olympic champion was denied a chance to compete. The medal podium at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics of +95 kg weight class would have definately been different if David Khakhaleishvili would have competed that day. His style of judo combines great power and technique. The force of his hip throws using the belt is unmatched by any other display of modern judo. The quck and technical ashi-waza with which David dispatched many opponents for Ippon is unmatched by any present day heavyweghts. It will be many years to come until we might see an athlete like David again.
