What is Soreness?
Any aches or pains associated with underused and overexerted muscles.
Causes
It is normal for muscles to be sore a day or two after a workout. Sore muscles just mean you are out of shape -- or that you are doing something wrong.
Symptoms
Stiffness of muscles or joints.
Dull pain in movement.
Treatment
Stretch the muscle gently to make it more flexible.
Massage the muscle.
Take hot showers to relax the muscle, never cold ones.
Do not exercise every single day if you are unbearably sore. But keeping the muscle in motion with light exercise can help.
Call Your Doctor If...
Is muscle soreness your excuse for not working out today? Get a new excuse -- or get moving.
Unless the symptoms begin to act more like a
muscle strain, a call to the doctor is unnecessary.
Prevention
- Keep your body in shape with light daily exercise so that when you do overexert yourself your muscles will be ready for it.
- Stretch well before any strenuous physical activity.
