| The bone has slipped out of its normal position in the joint. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Causes | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Any kind of trauma -- like a fall, a blow, or strain -- can cause a dislocation. Dislocations can occur in the large joints - shoulder, hip, knee, elbow and ankle or in the smaller joints - fingers and toes. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Symptoms | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A joint has lost its full range of motion and sharp pains radiate from the area when it is moved. The bone may also look like it is at an odd angle. Bruising may occur. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Treatment | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Usually, minor dislocations will correct themselves with some pain, swelling, and bruising. Rest is good alternated with slow rotation of the affected joint once it has been relocated. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Call Your Doctor If... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The joint is severely dislocated, there is a broken bone, or severe bleeding.
You cannot completely immobilize the injury by yourself. |
