Living Earth by Peter Kull
How to help our true Mother, the Earth
Recently, (2002) I  found  that a couple of Wiccans believe that spirituality is through ritual only.  That volunteering your time towards the environment is certainly not very exciting, and just work, so not very spiritual.  That's a shame.  I really need to stress that when you clean up a park....a beach....volunteer at an animal shelter....when you protest against wearing fur, or the abuse of pets, etc....THAT perhaps is  the most spiritual thing you could do for your Goddess/God.  Yes, cerimonial magic is great, being in a circle with friends and declaring your love  to the Gods is wonderful, not to mention lots of fun; but is that it?  You are done until the next Full Moon or Sabbat? There is really NO closer way to be in touch with the Goddess than to give back to Her as She has provided for you.  That is what the entire faith is about!  I guess that is why I had to form my own Pagan group that does it all, ritual and Goddess support all the way to opening our eyes and hearts to what is really around us.  It is too easy to close our eyes because we do not want to see the pollution, litter and land being taken away, day by day from our animal brothers and sisters, sea creatures, green life, and bird friends.

Living with rose-colored glasses, just a bit, is not a bad thing.  I now have a good attitude toward Gaia. I don't see a world coming apart like I used to, but a world that
can heal.  We can try to see the goodness in the world and try to radiate that goodness, which shines on others like a domino affect.  I am not ignorate as to the problems of the world, but complaining about it doesn't help much-as much as I probably do my fair share of that, too!

With a president (W. Bush) who could care less on environmental issues (look at Texas) I truely feel that Gaia herself is trying to get our attention.  And it is working!  More and more are people realizing what they will not have if the very dirt we live and the very air we breath  is contaminated.  The Goddess, by any name you call her, is crying out and asking us to remember when we knew we  were a part of nature.  I say the word 'remember' because, it is there inside us, as it was in our past lives, as it was in men and women of ancient times.  In a world that does not honor the left side (right-brain) we must go back and remember our true selves.  Only then do we truely feel free.  When we come to realize the Goddess is inside us we will feel an enlightenment like never before!  Then you will come to want to help Gaia, because then you will know SHE is part of YOU!  And you want to help you and your children, right?

Everyone has their own idea on how to save the Earth.  Some folks don't eat meat, in protest of America using 80% of it's grain to feed
cows and pigs...grain which could be better served to the poor in America and other countries.   That is an action I admire.  I was vegitarian for 18 months for the reason above, however....I missed my meat, and as much as I love to eat healthy, let's just say the tofu wasn't doing it for me!  I wanted my burger!  Well, I buy organic as much as I possibly can and to this day do not eat much meat at all.

The point I am making here is there is no wrong way or right way to serve Gaia..there are just ways...and you can pick a way that suits you.  What concerns you the most?  The forest?  Everglades or factory farming?  Can't find the time to help, yet want to donate money to a worthy charity?  Go for it!

True, we can't do it all.  But people who succeed do not have that attitude either.
Set an example for your children and get out there!!  Voluntering your time is also so self-fullfilling because your aura, your energy will GLOW knowing you are giving up your time for other living creatures who can not help themselves against mankind.  Instead of being on the PS2 (which I love!) you are out saving that old Grandfather tree before it is torn away to make room for that needed mini-mall, or clearing a beach for the turtles when they nest.  You will find you do not do it for the Karma, or blessings that will come in abundance, but because of the spirit of the Gods residing in you, are filling you with such joy, because that is how they feel, knowing that  you care.  The Earth also notices good and bad energies like any person.  The more we give, I really do believe the more She will continue to care for us and our children for generations.

I wanted to find some ways to help you get started on becoming a true Earth Steward, a supporter of our Mother and Goddess, Gaia.  No matter what tradition you follow, this is part of your faith, no one is separate from her.  When you help her, you help yourself.   If some of this sounds obvious, I am wanting to start from the beginning.
Blessings, Teressa
