Talking to Your Kids About Protecting Thier Online Lives
When you talk to your kids about the internet, make sure you talk to them the same way you would when you talk to them about the dangers of the real world.  Make sure you have some ground rules for them to follow while they are online.  Do not go easy on this matter.  If you are going to allow your kids to be online you should take time to get to know the internet yourself.  Make sure you check out the programs they will use and places they want to visit yourself before allowing them to get online.  Remember filters and blocks aren't saying you don't trust your child, it says you are protecting them.  Put the pc your kids will be using in a room where you will be able to monitor their online activities.  Just because you tell your child s/he can only be on for a certain length of time isnt protecting them from the dangers of the internet.  You should talk to your children about the truth of what is out there.  Not everyone is who they say they are online.  Show them sites that post true stories about what has happened to kids due to lack of being safe.  Stress to them that someone they just met online is not safe to meet in real life.  Also make sure they know how dangerous it is to give out personal information such as real name, phone number, address, etc over the internet.  If they are going to be using instant messenger programs limit their buddy lists to only family and friends they know in real life.  Make sure you as their parent know who these people are and can put a face with a name.  Create their online name and profile.  Make sure when you are creating this profile that you use an email address that only you have the password to so you know if they have tried to change their password to keep you out.  The bottom line is don't know who, what, where, why, and how for your childrens protection both in the real world and online.
Reporting Harassment

If you, your child, or anyone using your pc is or has been harassed online (ie threatening, abusive, obscene emails, or a person using their online identity in newsgroups or mailing lists) contact your local law enforcement agency or the FBI immediately.
