Boat-tailed Grackle

Boat-tailed Grackles, male Cheesequake Creek, Shoreline Drive, Lawrence Harbor, New Jersey, 9:00 a.m. 6/12/04 (126kb) with Marsh Wren, Song Sparrow and Red-winged Blackbirds.  Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Mallards and Willets were also present.  The male Grackles tended to jump into a large bush near the mud walls of the Creek similar to the Audubon illustration to the left.

Cheesequake Creek, Shoreline Drive, Lawrence Harbor, New Jersey, 9:00 a.m. 6/12/04 (24kb). Male making buzzy sound, pausing for a moment to clap its upper and lower beak together and then continuing to buzz.

Female Boat-tailed Grackles, Cheesequake Creek, Shoreline Drive, Lawrence Harbor, New Jersey, 9:00 a.m. 6/12/04 (15kb), clucks.  Females, sometimes in a group, were walking up and down muddy edges of Creek looking for bugs and Fiddler Crabs and peering into mud walls where nests may have been located.
